Beside diabetes, non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice develop sporadic lymphoid infiltration of the thyroid gland, mimicking Hashimoto's thyroiditis. We have examined the prevalence of those manifestations in NOD mice, the influence of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and the association with autoantibodies. The incidence at 1 year is of 14.3% in wild-type NOD mice versus 19.6% in congenic NOD.H2k mice. As an initial step toward the generation of a murine model for mucopolysaccharidosis type I, we have identified and characterized a full-length murine alpha-L-iduronidase cDNA. Expression of the murine cDNA in COS-1 cells results in the production of alpha-L-iduronidase enzyme activity at a level 20-fold higher than that of the endogenous gene. The investigation reveals different influence of the plague microbe's fraction 1 polysaccharide-protein complex and of it's purified protein on the 5'-nucleotidase activity and on the chemiluminescence response of peritoneal macrophages. Although eosinophilic bar- or droplet-like inclusions are frequently detectable inside eggs deposited in the livers of Schistosoma japonicum-infected animals, little is known of their exact nature.
