Case-mix analyses in long-term care institutions in Stockholm.

In order to describe the patient case-mix in long-term care, several methods have been developed. One resource-based method, Resource Utilization Groups, RUGs, developed in New York and validated in several U.S. states, has also been validated in Stockholm and used there for studying various types of geriatric institutions. The variables used in this analysis, the distribution of the RUG categories, an ADL-index, and a case-mix index, show differences between geriatric departments, local nursing homes, mixed institutions, and private nursing homes. The geriatric departments show a high percent

Dietary Iodine Sufficiency and Moderate Insufficiency in the Lactating Mother and Nursing Infant: A Computational Perspective.

The Institute of Medicine recommends that lactating women ingest 290 μg iodide/d and a nursing infant, less than two years of age, 110 μg/d. The World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, and International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders recommend population maternal and infant urinary iodide concentrations ≥ 100 μg/L to ensure iodide sufficiency. For breast milk, researchers have proposed an iodide concentration range of 150-180 μg/L indicates iodide sufficiency for the mother and infant, however no national or international guidelines exist for breast m

Hostility Patterns: Implications for Nursing Practice.

In order to present the state of the science of hostility among and across disciplines, a review of the literature was completed. The knowledge gained may influence nursing practice. Scholarly works from nursing, medical and basic sciences, psychology, sociology, education, philosophy, business, communication, and criminology were reviewed. Similar patterns in the use of the concept were discovered. The patterns revealed five themes: hostility as a health-risk factor, hostility as a factor in family relationships, hostility as a factor in perceived challenge, hostility as a factor in criminal

Providing spiritual care at the end of life: nurses' roles and perspectives.

Identifying and meeting patients' spiritual needs is integral to nursing in end of life care. However, spirituality, spiritual care and assessment models are still not fully embedded across the UK. While nurses often collaborate with chaplains or other spiritual care professionals to support patients, ambiguity and misunderstanding between spirituality and religion can cause challenges in delivering effective, person-centred care. This article explores the role of spirituality in nursing practice and introduces structured reflections and practical tools to support spiritual care in end of life

Application of Predictive Analytics in Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Nursing Care.

Predictive analytics has emerged as a promising approach for improving reproductive health care and patient outcomes. During pregnancy and birth, the ability to accurately predict risks and complications could enable earlier interventions and reduce adverse events. However, there are challenges and ethical considerations for implementing predictive models in perinatal care settings. We introduce major concepts in predictive analytics and describe application of predictive modeling to perinatal care topics such as fertility, preeclampsia, labor onset, vaginal birth after cesarean, uterine ruptu
