We have characterized a high-affinity folate receptor in human molar placenta tissue. Radioligand binding exhibited characteristics typical of other high-affinity folate binding proteins. Those included, positive cooperativity, a tendency to increased binding affinity with decreasing receptor concentration, a slow ligand dissociation at pH 7.4 becoming rapid at pH 3.5, and inhibition by folate analogues. Ectopic eruption of teeth can occur in a wide variety of sites. These include the mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, nasal cavity and maxillary sinus. While this process is unusual, the detection of a third molar in the maxillary antrum is extremely rare. A case is presented of ectopic eruption of a third molar in the left maxillary sinus of a 35-year-old caucasian male giving rise to local morbidity.

We investigated the clinical characteristics of patients with partial molar pregnancy and patients who developed invasive partial mole. Between 1981 and 1990, 349 patients were followed up by the Aichi prefecture trophoblastic disease registration center after partial molar pregnancy. Although the natural history of pregnancies associated with complete hydatidiform mole has been well described, the clinical features of partial mole are less consistent. We managed five partial molar pregnancies complicated by severe pregnancy-induced hypertension in the second trimester. We describe the differentiation between complete and partial mole, and the unusual clinical presentation in our patients.

A retrospective analysis of complications and side effects associated with surgery for 1000 mandibular and 500 maxillary impacted third molars was performed. The analysis included 614 patients with impacted mandibular third molars and 274 with impacted maxillary third molars who were treated in a 5-year timeframe from 1987 to 1992. The incidence of intraoperative complications and side effects of mandibular third molar surgery was 1.1% and 4% for maxillary third molar surgery whereas postoperative complications were 4.3% and 1.2%, respectively.

Two cases are presented where the maxillary second molars were just erupting. The first was a Chinese boy of 8 years 2 months and the other, a Chinese boy of 17 years 4 months. These extremes in eruption time are unusual and do not appear to have been reported in the literature.

The remodeling of bone during molar drifting and cortical growth in the rat maxilla and the effects of dichloromethylene bisphosphonate (Cl2MBP) on these processes were investigated in 30 age-matched rats. A control group of six rats was killed at 10 weeks of age. Circulating immune complex levels were measured in patients with molar pregnancy to investigate the relationship between circulating immune complex and trophoblastic tumor burden. The implantation sites of 11 molar pregnancies were examined for the deposition of immunoglobulin and complemented by direct immunofluorescence. None of the 10 women experiencing their first molar pregnancy had immunoglobulin or complement deposition in the implantation site.
