We have studied a large population-based cohort of women who had amniocentesis at 14 weeks' gestation (early amniocentesis) in Victoria, a state of Australia, to determine fetal loss rates and maternal morbidity. This quality control study was devised to establish, wether laparoscopic cholecystectomy is recommendable for acute cholecystitis. Of 314 prospectively recorded laparoscopic cholecystectomies 59 were done for histologically proven acute cholecystitis within 3 years. 29 cases (49.2%) were converted to open cholecystectomy due to unsatisfactory exposure and recognition of anatomical structures or haemorrhage. The ocular morbidity pattern in 2010 eyes of 1005 patients with active pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis was studied prospectively. A complete clinical (ocular and systemic) examination, radiologic evaluation, Mantoux test and sputum analysis for acid-fast bacilli were carried out in all patients. The results of a randomized prospective trial investigating the morbidity from intranasal splints in 105 patients, were analysed. Intranasal splints are associated with considerable morbidity (significantly greater post-operative pain and a higher incidence of septal perforation and vestibulitis) and although they significantly reduce the likelihood of developing intranasal adhesions, a similar benefit can be obtained by careful nasal toilet at one week.

Sixty-three patients with severe acute pancreatitis have been studied. Pancreatitis was associated with biliary tract disease in 23 patients (36.5%) and with alcoholism in 21 (33.3%). Analysis of occupational morbidity for 1982-1989 in coal extraction industry workers in the Russian Federation showed its high-level detection in coal-miners. Ten adults were studied two to seven years after resection of a fibula for use as a free vascularised bone graft. Six had no symptoms in the donor leg, four had some aching, weakness or paraesthesia and three had definite weakness of the long toe flexors and extensors. The present study examined the impact of two methods of pain management on recovery in 38 women undergoing hysterectomy. One group received IV morphine in the recovery room and IM morphine on the ward on a PRN basis (PRN group). In the other group, a loading dose of morphine 8 mg IV was given when the patient first complained of pain and patient-controlled IV morphine (PCA) was initiated and continued for 48 h (PCA group). Both groups received similar amounts of morphine overall, differently distributed over time. The PCA patients received 8 mg.h-1 in the recovery room (approximately 2.5 hrs)
