The role of artificial intelligence for dengue prevention, control, and management: A technical narrative review.

Dengue fever remains a significant global health threat, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, where rapid urbanization and climate variability exacerbate its spread. Traditional surveillance and control systems often struggle with delayed reporting, limited predictive capacity, and resource constraints. Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a transformative opportunity to enhance dengue prevention, control, and management through data-driven decision-making. This review synthesizes current applications of AI across key domains: outbreak forecasting, vector control, clinical manage

Assessing the Relationship Between Entomological Surveillance Indices and West Nile Virus Transmission, United States: Systematic Review.

Background: Entomological surveillance indices are used to estimate the risk of West Nile virus (WNV; family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) transmission. To determine when and where to initiate mosquito control activities, integrated vector management programs establish action thresholds based on entomological surveillance indices. However, the application of entomological surveillance indices needs further investigation relative to the human risk of WNV infection. Herein, we examine the evidence from studies that investigated the quantitative relationship between entomological surveillance i…

Asaia spp. exposure for improving mosquito mass-rearing, and the effects on Culex pipiens pipiens vector competence for West Nile virus.

Various vector control strategies are in place to reduce the spread of arthropod-borne viruses. Some of these, such as application of insecticides, are encountering operational challenges and a reduced overall effectiveness due to evolution of resistance. Alternative approaches for mosquito population control, such as the sterile insect technique, depend on efficient mass-rearing of healthy mosquitoes prior to mass-release in the field. Therefore, improving efficiency and quality of mass-rearing techniques is crucial to obtain fit mosquitoes. Previous studies have shown that Acetic Acid Bacter

The status of insecticide resistance of Anopheles coluzzii on the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe, after 20 years of malaria vector control.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-based malaria vector control has been implemented on the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) for more than 20 years. During this period malaria incidence was significantly reduced to pre-elimination levels. While cases remained low since 2015, these have significantly increased in the last year, challenging the commitment of the country to achieve malaria elimination by 2025. To better understand the reasons for increasing malaria cases, levels and underlying mechanisms of insecticide resistance in the local Anopheles coluzzii populations were characterized. METHODS

Using artificial odors to optimize attractiveness of host decoy traps to malaria vectors.

Malaria vector surveillance tools often incorporate features of hosts that are attractive to blood-seeking females. The recently developed host decoy trap (HDT) combines visual, thermal, and olfactory stimuli associated with human hosts and has shown great efficacy in terms of collecting malaria vectors. Synthetic odors and yeast-produced carbon dioxide (CO2) could prove useful by mimicking the human odors currently used in HDTs and provide standardized and easy-to-use olfactory attractants. The objective of this study was to test the attractiveness of various olfactory attractant cues in HDTs

A dynamic game of lymphatic filariasis prevention by voluntary use of insecticide treated nets.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) has been targeted for elimination as a public health concern by 2030 with a goal to keep the prevalence of LF infections under the 1% threshold. While mass drug administration (MDA) is a primary strategy recommended by WHO, the use of insecticide treated nets (ITN) plays a crucial role as an alternative strategy when MDA cannot be used. In this paper, we use imitation dynamics to incorporate human behavior and voluntary use of ITN into the compartmental epidemiological model of LF transmission. We find the equilibrium states of the dynamics and the ITN usage as it dep

Polymer Beads Increase Field Responses to Host Attractants in the Dengue Vector Aedes aegypti.

This study investigates the efficacy of three different olfactory cues - cyclohexanone, linalool oxide (LO), and 6-methyl-5-heptan-2-one (sulcatone) - in attracting Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of dengue, using BG sentinel traps in a dengue-endemic area (urban Ukunda) in coastal Kenya. Two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 compared solid formulations of the compounds in polymer beads against liquid formulations with hexane as the solvent. CO2-baited traps served as controls. In Experiment 2, traps were baited with each compound in the polymer beads, commercial BG-Lure, and CO2. Our

Resurgence of Malaria Transmission and Incidence after Withdrawal of Indoor Residual Spraying in the District of Koulikoro, Mali.

In Mali, malaria vector control relies mostly on long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual spraying (IRS). From 2008 to 2016, an IRS program was implemented in the district of Koulikoro. After a significant reduction in malaria indicators, IRS was stopped in 2016. This study evaluated the effect of IRS withdrawal on entomological parameters of malaria transmission and incidence in children aged 6 months to 10 years in the district of Koulikoro. Entomological parameters of malaria transmission during the last year of IRS implementation in 2016 were compared with those obtained 2 years

Evaluation of Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) for malaria control in an endemic area in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of malaria in Brazil are concentrated in the Amazon region. One of the vector control alternatives recommended by the WHO is the long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN). This tool is used in the nine federal states of the Brazilian Legal Amazon, where LLINs are essential for reducing vector density and disease transmission as they prevent contact between the mosquito and the individual. The objective of this study was to evaluate the residuality and use of LLIN insecticides in different health regions in a city located in the Brazilian Amazon. METHODS: A total of 17,027 LL

Mitigating the Public Health Issues Caused by the Filarial Vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Through Phytocontrol and Larval Source Marker Management.

Failure of conventional mosquito control strategies to curb the population of vectors have made the humans vulnerable to serious medical problems transmitted by them. This effect has been compounded by global climate change enabling the mosquitoes to cross geographical boundaries and cause trouble in regions where they were initially not found. As such, the scientific community has been compelled to devise alternative and innovative strategies of mosquito control that can be integrated with the conventional practices to implement multi-phasic approach of vector management. Culex quinquefasciat…

Reduction in malaria burden following the introduction of indoor residual spraying in areas protected by long-lasting insecticidal nets in Western Kenya, 2016-2018.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are the main malaria vector control measures deployed in Kenya. Widespread pyrethroid resistance among the primary vectors in Western Kenya has necessitated the re-introduction of IRS using an organophosphate insecticide, pirimiphos-methyl (Actellic® 300CS), as a pyrethroid resistance management strategy. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the combined use of non-pyrethroid IRS and LLINs has yielded varied results. We aimed to evaluate the effect of non-pyrethroid IRS and LLINs on malaria indicators in a high

Population replacement gene drive characteristics for malaria elimination in a range of seasonal transmission settings: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Gene drives are a genetic engineering method where a suite of genes is inherited at higher than Mendelian rates and has been proposed as a promising new vector control strategy to reinvigorate the fight against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Using an agent-based model of malaria transmission with vector genetics, the impacts of releasing population-replacement gene drive mosquitoes on malaria transmission are examined and the population replacement gene drive system parameters required to achieve local elimination within a spatially-resolved, seasonal Sahelian setting are

The effect of community-driven larval source management and house improvement on malaria transmission when added to the standard malaria control strategies in Malawi: a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current standard interventions are not universally sufficient for malaria elimination. The effects of community-based house improvement (HI) and larval source management (LSM) as supplementary interventions to the Malawi National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) interventions were assessed in the context of an intensive community engagement programme. METHODS: The study was a two-by-two factorial, cluster-randomized controlled trial in Malawi. Village clusters were randomly assigned to four arms: a control arm; HI; LSM; and HI + LSM. Malawi NMCP interventions and community engagem

Evaluation of the interaction between insecticide resistance-associated genes and malaria transmission in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato in central Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that the knockdown resistance gene (Kdr) L1014F and acetylcholinesterase-1 gene (Ace-1R) G119S mutations involved in pyrethroid and carbamate resistance in Anopheles gambiae influence malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. This is likely due to changes in the behaviour, life history and vector competence and capacity of An. gambiae. In the present study, performed as part of a two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of household screening plus a novel insecticide delivery system (In2Care Eave Tubes), we investigated the distribution

LED Colour Trap for Aedes aegypti Control.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit dengue, zika, and chikungunya viruses, neglected diseases that are considered global health challenges. Due to the lack of antiviral drugs and vaccines for these illnesses, vector control with chemical insecticides is the principal strategy for preventing their spread. However, vector populations are becoming increasingly resistant to insecticides, and the development of other control measures is, therefore, imperative. METHODS: A new insect trap (IT) was used to control Aedes aegypti. A specific light-emitting diode (LED) served as the attractant

An overview of malarial Anopheles mosquito survival estimates in relation to methodology.

BACKGROUND: The transmission of malaria is known to be sensitive to the survival (longevity, mortality) of its mosquito vector, yet there have been few reviews of estimates of this important population parameter in the malaria-carrying genus Anopheles. METHODS: We carried out a systematic search for and meta-analysis of survival estimates, framed around the methods of estimation, under the major groupings of ‛vertical' (based on stable age or stage frequencies), ‛horizontal' (based on recaptures of marked and released cohorts), and ‛parasitological' (proportion of infectious mosquitoes). The role of oxygen depletion and subsequent radioprotective effects during irradiation of mosquito pupae in water.

BACKGROUND: Radiation induced sterility is the basis of the Sterile Insect Technique, by which a target insect pest population is suppressed by releasing artificially reared sterile males of the pest species in overflooding numbers over a target site. In order for the sterile males to be of high biological quality, effective standard irradiation protocols are required. Following studies investigating the effects of mosquito pupae irradiation in water versus in air, there is a need to investigate the oxy-regulatory behavior of mosquito pupae in water to better understand the consequences of irr
