A dynamic finite element model of the lung that incorporates a simplified geometry with realistic lung material properties has been developed. Observations of lung motion from respiratory-gated computed tomography were used to provide a database against which the predictions of the model are assessed. Data from six patients presenting with lung tumors were processed to give sagittal sections of the lung containing the tumor as a function of the breathing phase. Statistical shape modeling was used to outline the diaphragm, the tumor volume and the thoracic wall at each breathing phase. The moti…

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness (MS) can be a debilitating side effect associated with motion in real or virtual environments. We analyzed the effect of expectancy on MS and propose and validate a fast and simple MS measure.
BACKGROUND: Several questionnaires measure MS before or after stimulus presentation, but no satisfactory tool has been established to quickly capture MS data during exposure. To fill this gap, we introduce the Fast MS Scale (FMS), a verbal rating scale ranging from zero (no sickness at all) to 20 (frank sickness). Also, little is known about the role of expectancy effects in M…

BACKGROUND: When intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is realised with dynamic multi-leaf collimators (MLC) and given under respiratory motion, dosimetric errors may occur. These errors are a consequence of the dose blurring and the interplay between the organ motion and the leaf motion. In the present study, a model for evaluating these dosimetric effects for patient-specific cases has been developed and tested.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the purpose written software, three dimensional (3D) dose distributions can be calculated both with and without a generated breathing cycle. To valid…

INTRODUCTION: In patients with spondylolisthesis, it is assumed that flexion accentuates anterior displacement, whereas extension causes some reduction. Paradoxical movement-where flexion causes reduction of spondylolisthesis and extension increases the anterior translation, is rarely described. In this study, we investigate the prevalence of paradoxical motion in patients with L5-S1 spondylolytic spondylolisthesis and why this abnormal motion occurs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flexion and extension radiographs of 41 patients with grade I and II spondylolytic spondylolisthesis of the L5-S1 segmen…

We perceive the world around us as stable. This is remarkable given that our body parts as well as we ourselves are constantly in motion. Humans and other primates move their eyes more often than their hearts beat. Such eye movements lead to coherent motion of the images of the outside world across the retina. Furthermore, during everyday life, we constantly approach targets, avoid obstacles or otherwise move in space. These movements induce motion across different sensory receptor epithels: optical flow across the retina, tactile flow across the body surface and even auditory flow as detected…

Previous research has suggested that Parkinson's disease (PD) impairs motion perception. First-order motion consists of moving luminance-defined attributes. Second-order motion, on the other hand, consists of moving patterns whose motion attributes are not luminance-defined. The detection of first and second-order motion is thought to be mediated by different mechanisms. Here, we compare the ability of Parkinson's disease patients (PDPs) to detect first-order/second-order motion with normal subjects. Subjects had to discriminate the drift direction of first-order motion (luminance-modulated no…

The perceived relative position of a moving object is frequently shifted as compared to the relative position of the object in the real world. The illusions have traditionally been explained by temporal models that influence the perceptual latency of visual objects. However, another compelling theory has recently been proposed on the basis of spatial models that directly influence the coded location of visual objects. In this study, spatial models were further supported by three different types of illusions composed of apparent motions, in which the perceived relative positions of stationary b…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Paradoxical vocal fold motion dysfunction (PVFMD) is a disorder of the larynx characterized by adduction of the vocal cords during the respiratory cycle leading to symptoms of extrathoracic airway obstruction. PVFMD mimics asthma and patients with PVFMD (PVFMD+) are often diagnosed incorrectly as refractory asthma and receive unnecessary treatment. This study determined the prevalence of PVFMD in asthma patients and described the relationship between asthma and PVFMD.
METHODS: A descriptive study of 94 asthmatic patients and 40 control subjects, all of whom were exam…

This study investigates motion-sickness-related brain responses using a VR-based driving simulator on a motion platform with six degrees of freedom, which provides both visual and vestibular stimulations to induce motion sickness in a manner that is close to that in daily life. Subjects' brain dynamics associated with motion sickness were measured using a 32-channel EEG system. Their degree of motion sickness was simultaneously and continuously reported using an onsite joystick, providing non-stop behavioral references to the recorded EEG changes. The acquired EEG signals were parsed by indepe…

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: The long-term outcomes of mitral valve repairs are enhanced with an annuloplasty device. Although, in general, semirigid and rigid annuloplasty devices remodel the shape of the mitral valve annulus, the effect of geometric alteration on annular motion has not been fully assessed. Hence, the study aim was to investigate the influence of semi-rigid annuloplasty devices on the motion of the mitral valve annulus in adult sheep.
METHODS: Sonomicrometric crystals were attached to semi-rigid annuloplasty devices (CG Future Band and CG Future COMPOSITE Ring), as well …

Patients with unilateral vestibular failure (UVF) experience oscillopsia (apparent motion of the visual scene) during rapid head movements due to increased retinal slip caused by vestibulo-ocular reflex impairment. Oscillopsia is always smaller than the net retinal slip and decreases over time in patients with acquired vestibular loss; this correlates with increased thresholds for visual motion detection and increased tolerance to retinal slip. We investigated the underlying cortical adaptive processes using visual motion stimulation during blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI. Optokinetic…

Visual information is crucial for goal-directed reaching. A number of studies have recently shown that motion in particular is an important source of information for the visuomotor system. For example, when reaching a stationary object, movement of the background can influence the trajectory of the hand, even when the background motion is irrelevant to the object and task. This manual following response may be a compensatory response to changes in body position, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here we tested whether visual motion area MT+ is necessary to generate the manual follo…

It has been proposed that the corpus callosum may play an important role in spectral cue processing that allows vertical auditory movement p … rectly identify the trajectory direction or its length, they showed greater capability in detecting motion per se when the task was difficult. These results suggest that in the absence of the corpus callosum, compensatory reorganization of the brain allowed for superior auditory spectral cue processing.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness - the discomfort experienced when perceived motion disturbs the organs of balance - may include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, pallor, cold sweats, hypersalivation, hyperventilation and headaches. The control and prevention of these symptoms have included pharmacological, behavioural and complementary therapies. Although scopolamine (hyoscine) has been used in the treatment and prevention of motion sickness for decades, there have been no systematic reviews of its effectiveness.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of scopolamine versus no therapy, placebo, …

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of the histaminergic drug "Betahistine dihydrochloride" in experimental motion sickness in 10 healthy volunteers (mean age 19.4 y.o.) with high susceptibility to motion sickness. Motion sickness was modeled using Coriolis (precession) accelerations (cumulative Coriolis stimulation test--CCST). Each subject took 32 mg of "Betahistine dihydrochloride" or placebo under "double-blind" conditions 1 hour before testing. The duration and slow phase velocity of the post-rotational nystagmus, the pursuit eye tracking test, and the latency, …

The success of diffusion MRI, which was introduced in the mid 1980s is deeply rooted in the powerful concept that during their random, diffusion-driven movements water molecules probe tissue structure at a microscopic scale well beyond the usual image resolution. The observation of these movements thus provides valuable information on the structure and the geometric organization of tissues. The most successful application of diffusion MRI has been in brain ischemia, following the discovery that water diffusion drops at a very early stage of the ischemic event. Diffusion MRI provides some patie

Illusory motion can be generated by successively flashing a stationary visual stimulus in two spatial locations separated by several degrees of visual angle. In appropriate conditions, the apparent motion is indistinguishable from real motion: The observer experiences a luminous object traversing a continuous path from one stimulus location to the other through intervening positions where no physical stimuli exist. The phenomenon has been extensively investigated for nearly a century but little is known about its neurophysiological foundation. Here we present images of activations in the prima…
