How Do Violinists Adapt to Dynamic Assistive Support? A Study Focusing on Kinematics, Muscle Activity, and Musical Performance.

OBJECTIVE: Assessing violinists' motor and musical performance adaptations to dynamic assistive support (DAS) provided by a passive device, using a force-field adaptation paradigm. BACKGROUND: Up to 93% of instrumentalists are affected by musculoskeletal injuries and particularly violinists. The repetitive nature of their work may lead to muscle fatigue, an injury risk factor. DAS has been used in occupational settings to minimize muscle activations and limit fatigue accumulation. DAS may however affect motor and musical performance. METHOD: Fifteen expert violinists were equipped with refle…

The effects of torbafylline on blood flow, pO2 and function of rat ischaemic skeletal muscle.

Blood flow at rest and during contractions (measured with labelled microspheres), red cell flux (assessed by laser-Doppler flowmetry), surface pO2, lactate accumulation and release, the development of fatigue during acute muscle contractions, and performance in chronic experiments (running wheel) were estimated in rat hind limb muscles during unilateral acute occlusion or chronic ligation of the femoral artery. The effects of torbafylline (7-ethoxymethyl-1-(5-hydroxy-5-methylhexyl)3-methylxanthine) on the above-mentioned parameters were studied after acute i.v. infusion or chronic oral gavage.

The impact of mitokine MOTS-c administration on the soleus muscle of rats subjected to a 7-day hindlimb suspension.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of MOTS-c on the key functional alterations in the rat soleus muscle during 7-day unloading - the transformation of slow fibers into fast ones, atrophy and increased fatigue. We daily intraperitoneally injected male Wistar rats with a short mitochondrial peptide MOTS-c during 7-day unloading of their hind limbs. After the end of the experiment, we conducted an ex vivo fatigue test of soleus muscle and showed that the MOTS-c administration prevents increased fatigue during 7-day hind limb unloading. Also, using immunohistochemical analysis, we

Experienced and physiological fatigue in neuromuscular disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue has been described as a typical symptom of neurological diseases. It might be caused both by changes at the peripheral and at the central level. This study measured the level of experienced fatigue and physiological correlates of fatigue in three genetically defined neuromuscular disorders. METHODS: Sixty-five facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD), 79 classical myotonic dystrophy (DM), 73 hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I (HMSN) patients and 24 age-matched healthy controls made a 2-min sustained maximal voluntary contraction of the biceps brachii muscle. Respiratory system responses to a maximal apnoea.

A maximal apnoea provides significant challenges to one's physiological systems, including significantly altered arterial blood gases, and requires a highly integrative response from multiple systems, that is, changes in blood pressure, maintenance of cerebral blood flow, etc. Previous work and reviews have focused on the cardiovascular responses to a maximal apnoea, but very little work has focused upon the responses of the respiratory muscles and respiratory mechanics. This is important because of the changes to arterial blood gases leading to an increased drive to breath and the appearance

Automated and Continuous Fatigue Monitoring in Construction Workers Using Forearm EMG and IMU Wearable Sensors and Recurrent Neural Network.

About 40% of the US construction workforce experiences high-level fatigue, which leads to poor judgment, increased risk of injuries, a decrease in productivity, and a lower quality of work. Therefore, it is essential to monitor fatigue to reduce its adverse effects and prevent long-term health problems. However, since fatigue demonstrates itself in several complex processes, there is no single standard measurement method for fatigue detection. This study aims to develop a system for continuous workers' fatigue monitoring by predicting the aerobic fatigue threshold (AFT) using forearm muscle ac

Mitochondrial function in intact skeletal muscle fibres of creatine kinase deficient mice.

Creatine kinase (CK) has a central role in skeletal muscle, acting as a fast energy buffer and shuttle between sites of energy production (mitochondria) and consumption (cross-bridges and ion pumps). Unexpectedly, isolated fast-twitch skeletal muscle cells of mice deficient in both cytosolic and mitochondrial CK (CK-/-) are highly fatigue resistant during stimulation protocols that stress aerobic metabolism. We have now studied different aspects of mitochondrial function in CK-/- skeletal muscle. Intact, single fibres of flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) muscles were fatigued by repeated tetanic s

The Effect of Core Stabilization Exercise with the Abdominal Drawing-in Maneuver Technique on Stature Change during Prolonged Sitting in Sedentary Workers with Chronic Low Back Pain.

To enhance stature recovery, lumbar spine stabilization by stimulating the deep trunk muscle activation for compensation forces originating from the upper body was introduced. The abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) technique has been found mainly to activate deep trunk muscles. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether 5 weeks of training of deep trunk muscles using the ADIM technique could improve stature recovery, delay trunk muscle fatigue, and decrease pain intensity during prolonged sitting. Thirty participants with chronic low back pain (CLBP) conducted a core stabiliza…

Effects of fatigue and gender on peroneal reflexes elicited by sudden ankle inversion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of neuromuscular fatigue and gender on peroneus brevis muscle (PB) and peroneus longus muscle (PL) reflexes elicited by sudden ankle inversion. Sixteen males and fifteen females stood on a "trap-door" platform that suddenly inverted the ankle 20 degrees when released. The resulting movement elicited peroneal reflexes. Reflex measurements were collected both before and after fatiguing the ankle evertors. Reflex delay in the PB and PL was not affected by fatigue, gender, or their interaction. Reflex amplitude in the PL exhibited no main ef

Cell-free DNA kinetics in response to muscle-damaging exercise: A drop jump study.

A significant increase in circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) occurs with physical exercise, which depends on the type of exertion and the duration. The aims of this study were as follows: (1) to investigate the time course of cfDNA and conventional markers of muscle damage from immediately after to 96 h after muscle-damaging exercise; and (2) to investigate the relationship between cfDNA and indicators of primary (low-frequency fatigue and maximal voluntary isometric contraction) and secondary (creatine kinase and delayed-onset muscle soreness) muscle damage in young healthy males. Prevalence and determinants of fatigue in patients with moderate to severe chronic GvHD.

Although fatigue is common after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, little is known about fatigue in patients with chronic GvHD (cGvHD). The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with fatigue in cGvHD. Data were drawn from a sequentially recruited, cross-sectional study of adults with moderate or severe cGvHD (n=263). Respondents were classified as fatigued or not fatigued based on their response to a single item regarding loss of energy from the Lee cGvHD Symptom Scale. In univariate analysis, factors significantly associated with fatigue included performance status,
