A case of myiasis in a patient with psoriasis from Turkey.

Myiasis infestations caused by the larvae of flies mostly belonging to Cyclorapha suborders are frequently encountered in Turkey, which is located in the subtropical zone. The skin is a common site for myiasis, and the infestations are likely to develop in infected tissues and poorly attended wounds of the skin. The case, a 30-year-old male patient, was diagnosed with psoriasis 18 years ago. He had psoriatic scales on his right big toe and was receiving corticosteroid and immunosuppressive drugs. A total of 11 fly larvae were removed from the infected right first toe of the patient. Structures…

[Urogenital myiasis caused by Psychoda albipennis in a woman].

We report the case of urogenital myiasis caused by Psychoda albipennis in a 50-year-old female patient who had a urinary bladder surgery at Osmangazi University, Faculty of Medicine. After the surgery she returned to the hospital claiming that she had seen small, white colored, active particles in her urine. The examination of the material revealed the presence of 3 larvae, which were identified as the fourth stage of the moth fly Psychoda albipennis. The complaints of the patient disappeared after antibiotic and antiseptic treatment of the infested area. This case is of special interest due t…

Not the usual suspects: human wound myiasis by phorids.

Infestation of animal tissues by dipteran larvae (myiasis) commonly occurs in many species, but it is unusual for humans in temperate regions. Nevertheless, human myiasis is regularly observed in many primary care facilities in the United States. Beyond medical issues associated with treating human myiasis, both the causal agent and the longevity of myiasis can have legal implications, for example, as evidence of neglect. Cases of human myiasis in the United States typically involve imported myiasis from torsalo, Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus, Jr.) (Diptera: Oestridae), or facultative myiasis f…

A case of furuncular myiasis associated with systemic inflammation.

Cutaneous myiasis is a common travel-associated dermatosis caused by fly larvae. We report an unusual case of furuncular myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis that was associated with signs of systemic inflammation. In this case study, morphological and novel molecular approaches were used to identify and characterize the larvae responsible for human infestation.

Cutaneous furuncular myiasis: Human infestation by the botfly.

Dermatobia hominis, the botfly, is indigenous to Central and South America. Its usual host is a mammal, often a horse or cow. Cutaneous furuncular myiasis, human infestation by the botfly, has rarely been reported. Symptoms of infestation include a locally painful, firm furuncular lesion, often with a centrally located pore. Due to their infrequent occurrence, these lesions are often misdiagnosed as cellulitis, leishmaniasis, furunculosis, staphylococcal boil, insect bite or sebaceous cyst - conditions with similar presentations. The present case reiterates the need to think of 'zebras' when h…

Oral myiasis: a case report and literature review.

Myiasis is the infestation of tissues and organs of animals and humans by certain Dipteran fly larvae. This phenomenon is well documented in the skin, especially among animals and people in tropical and subtropical areas. Oral myiasis is a rare condition and can be caused by several species of Dipteran fly larvae and may be secondary to serious medical conditions. Upon removal of the larvae, the tissues seem to recover with no subsequent complications and with no need for further treatment. Here we describe a case of oral myiasis within the gingiva of a healthy young man caused by the larvae o…

Nosocomial Oral Myiasis by Sarcophaga sp. in Turkey.

We present a case of oral myiasis in a 15-year-old boy with tuberculosis meningitis. The diagnosis was based on the visual presence of wriggling larvae about 1 cm in size and on the microscopic features of the maggots, especially those relating to stigmatic structures. The larvae were identified as third-stage larvae of Sarcophaga sp.

A case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica.

Myiasis is caused by the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by dipterous larvae. The disease is infrequent in Turkey; it is observed particularly in people with some predisposing factors. A 46-year-old male farmer with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) presented with the complaint of a blood-tinged discharge and pain in the left frontal-temporal region for three days. Physical examination revealed live maggots in the ulcerous wound resulting from basal cell carcinoma. The larvae were removed with forceps, and the wound was locally dressed with povidone-iodine. The maggo…

Management of myiasis: current status and future prospects.

The management of myiasis in livestock has been an example of the success of modern chemical approaches for parasite control, yet in some cases remains extremely intractable, requiring the development of novel strategies. In addition, the growing and urgent need to develop integrated strategies that enhance the sustainability of livestock production systems drives the search for new techniques [see Int. J. Parasitol. 29 (1999) 7].The following summary represents a synthesis of a symposium presented at the 19th International Conference of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary …

A case of oral myiasis due to Chrysomya bezziana.

Chrysomya bezziana is a causative agent of obligatory myiasis. We report the first case of human infestation of Chrysomya bezziana in Hong Kong in an 89-year-old woman who had previously had a stroke. One day after hospital admission for fever, a small fissure at the labial gingiva of the upper incisors and several ulcerative lesions at the hard palate were noticed during routine mouth care. A live maggot was seen protruding from the small fissure. In the following few days, a total of seven maggots were removed by forceps. Urgent computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the oral …

Cutaneous myiasis due to Dermatobium hominis in Winnipeg.

Cutaneous myiasis is an uncommon infestation in North America, with most cases arising in travelers who have recently returned from Central and South America. The majority of cases are due to Dermatobium hominis and present with a furunculoid nodule with local inflammation. The case reported is of a 57-year-old woman with cutaneous myiasis contracted in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Molecular approaches to the study of myiasis-causing larvae.

Among arthropod diseases affecting animals, larval infections - myiases - of domestic and wild animals have been considered important since ancient times. Besides the significant economic losses to livestock worldwide, myiasis-causing larvae have attracted the attention of scientists because some parasitise humans and are of interest in forensic entomology. In the past two decades, the biology, epidemiology, immunology, immunodiagnosis and control methods of myiasis-causing larvae have been focused on and more recently the number of molecular studies have also begun to increase. The 'new techn…

Neonatal myiasis: a case report and a role of the Internet.

Maggot infestation (myiasis) can occur in the newborn baby. However, neonatal myiasis is rare, and there is no published literature on this subject. Rapid useful information on such an esoteric clinical case can be obtained by searching the Internet. Effective medical management includes complete removal of the maggots and offering reassurance to the distraught parents.

[Imported myiasis. Report of a case and prevention measures].

Myiasis is the invasion of tissue by larvae of flies. They parasitize living tissues (specific myiasis) or cavity of warm blood animals compulsorily, optional (hemispecific myiasis) or accidentally (accident myiasis). It is frequent in sub-saharian Africa, while in European countries only imported cases are described. A case personally observed and some measures for prevention are described.

[A case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis].

Due to increasing international travelling of European population, tropical parasitic diseases may be imported more frequently in temperate countries. We describe a subject who travelled in Brasil and returned to Italy with a subcutaneous nodule containing a phase-II Dermatobia hominis larva; such larva is reported with photographic documentation.
