Elastic Intramedullary Nails in the Treatment of Pediatric Length Unstable Femur Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Elastic intramedullary nails (EINs) are the treatment of choice for school-age children (5 to 12) with diaphyseal femur fractures. Previous literature suggests that EINs are an effective treatment for stable fracture patterns, but may be inadequate for unstable fracture patterns. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether patients with length unstable fractures had a higher complication rate than those with length stable fractures when treated with EINs. METHODS: All patients with diaphyseal femur fractures treated with EINs over a 22-year period at a single institution wer…

Nails and COVID-19 - A comprehensive review of clinical findings and treatment.

The SARS-CoV-2 infection, responsible for COVID-19, has raised the interest for infection-associated muco-cutaneous symptoms. While dermatologic symptoms in general gained an increasing awareness, affection of the nail organ has been mentioned only recently. We provide a narrative review on COVID-19 manifestation on the nail organ and add symptoms induced by personal protective measures and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Available treatment options are discussed.

The color of skin: gray diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Gray diseases are a group of skin disorders characterized mainly by gray discoloration with or without involving the mucous membranes and nails. These diseases may be hereditary or acquired. Some of the better-known hereditary entities are dermal melanocytosis, incontinentia pigmenti, hypomelanosis of Ito, hemochromatosis, ochronosis, and silvery hair syndrome. Acquired diseases with gray coloring include late-stage organ failure, lichen planus pigmentosus, erythema dyschromicum perstans, and drug reactions. The discoloration is due to either increased epidermal and or dermal melanin or dermal…

The color of skin: orange diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Cutaneous disease can present with lesions of all colors of the visible spectrum. Lesions of the skin, nail, and mucous membranes with an orange color can be due to a variety of etiologies. The conditions may appear as purely orange, yellow-orange, red-orange, tan, or brown with an orange hue. The orange color may also present as a transient phase of a disease process. As with all dermatologic pathology, a key way to distinguish orange-colored lesions is by distribution and morphology. The sclera, palate, lips, gingiva, and nails may also be involved. A literature review using PubMed with keyw…

The color of skin: white diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

White diseases are a heterogenous group characterized by hypopigmentation or depigmentation. Skin and eye color are determined by the number and size of melanosomes present. Melanin is produced by melanosomes in the melanocytes present within the epidermis of the skin, uvea, and retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). Conditions altering the number of melanocytes or concentration of melanin result in a lack of pigmentation, appearing as "white diseases" ranging from the well-known albinism and vitiligo to more esoteric white hand syndrome and Degos disease.

[Therapy of pediatric femoral fractures. Two versus three elastic stable intramedullary nails].

BACKGROUND: The conservative treatment of pediatric femoral fractures can be socially and financially burdensome for patients and families due to the long period of immobilization. New operative techniques have consistently gained significance in the treatment of such fractures due to a shorter period of immobilization. Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) in particular has been proven to lead to better outcome in comparison to conservative treatment. This article presents the first study that compares the outcome of three versus two ESINs in the treatment of pediatric femoral shaft fr

Outcome of Both Bone Forearm Fracture Fixation in Children by Rush Nails.

INTRODUCTION: Forearm fractures are common upper limb injuries among children and usually treated non-operatively. Failure of non-operative treatment, open injuries and multiple fractures are the indications for surgery in paediatric both bone forearm fractures. Intramedullary nailing is considered as minimally invasive procedure with excellent to fair outcomes but it is not free of complications. We reviewed the results and evaluated the outcomes of IM fixation of forearm fractures in children by Rush nails to understand the risks and complications associated with these procedures. METHODS: …

[Two cases of fungal infection of nails with participation of Cryptendoxyla hypophloia].

Reported are two cases of suspected onychomycosis with participation of Cryptendoxyla hypophloia. The species C. hypophloia have not been isolated from human and animal clinical material yet. It is a rarely reported cleistothecial ascomycete that has been found to be naturally present on cellulose-rich materials. Its strains tested in a laboratory demonstrated very good susceptibility to terbinafine. The identification of isolates was verified based on rDNA sequencing and by comparison with C. hypophloia ex-type strain.

Incidentally detected asymptomatic metal foreign bodies (two nails) in shoemaker's maxillary sinus.

The diagnosis metal foreign bodies of maxillary sinus cannot be usually made in an acute setting and patients may present with chronic symptoms due to drainage and chronic irritation of the mucosa years later. Metal foreign bodies can be generally displaced to the maxillary sinus at the time of dental intervention. In this article, we report a very interesting case of 23-year-old male shoemaker with two metal foreign bodies (nails) which were non-related with any surgical intervention or trauma and found incidentally in the right maxillary sinus.

Severe onychodystrophy caused by allergic contact dermatitis to acrylates in artificial nails.

Acrylic resin monomers, especially acrylates and methacrylates, are well-known sensitizers responsible for allergic contact dermatitis mainly in the occupational setting. The most frequently affected professionals are dentists, orthopedic surgeons, manicurists, painting industry and fiberglass workers. The authors report the case of a 39-year-old healthy woman, a secretary, who developed severe onychodystrophy of all fingers, 1 week after the application of sculptured acrylic nails.

Effects of lag screw design and lubrication on sliding in trochanteric nails.

This study compared the sliding characteristics of three lag screw designs used with trochanteric nails and determined the effects of lubrication on sliding. They were tested by an established method to measure initiation and ease of lag screw sliding. These tests were then repeated with calf serum lubrication. There were significant differences (p < 0.05) between the loads required to initiate lag screw sliding that appeared to be related to design. Screw sliding was similar for all three designs; however, the presence of lag screw locking slots affected sliding in that region. Lubrication di…

Melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma on different nails of the same hand.

Nail dyschromia, including melanonychia and erythronychia, encompasses a wide range of possible diagnoses. While the majority of these lesions are benign, malignancies of the nail unit represent a sinister, and potentially life-threatening, cause of nail dyschromia. Unfamiliarity with tumors of the nail apparatus can lead to a delay in diagnosis. A case is presented of a patient with two separate and concurrent malignant neoplasms of the nail unit, on different nails on the same hand, each featuring an unusual clinical presentation: amelanotic melanoma presenting as longitudinal erythronychia …

Distal locking of tibial nails : a new device to reduce radiation exposure.

UNLABELLED: The indications for intramedullary nailing have expanded to include most tibial shaft fractures. Nail design has improved since their first introduction, but distal locking remains a difficult part of the procedure, resulting in radiation exposure to the patient and the surgeon and increased operation time. To address these issues, we describe an alternative surgical technique using a newly designed distal targeting device that consists of a proximally mounted aiming arm, and we report the preliminary data from its use in all tibial shaft fractures amenable to surgery for a 2-year
