PET detection of solitary distant skeletal muscle metastasis of esophageal adenocarcinoma.

A 67-year-old man with progressive dysphagia was recently diagnosed with a gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma. Contrast-enhanced CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis reported a large GE junction tumor without evidence of metastatic disease. FDG positron emission tomography revealed intense tracer accumulation in the soft tissue mass at the GE junction consistent with the primary neoplasm. In addition, PET scan also identified a solitary focus of intense FDG accumulation at the musculotendinous junction of the right gluteus minimus muscle. Subsequent MRI demonstrated mild enhancement and co

Metastatic breast cancer simulating well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms of visceral organs.

A series of metastatic breast carcinoma (MBC) mimicking visceral well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms has not previously been reported. We identified 5 consultation cases originally submitted as neuroendocrine neoplasms in women but that were found to be MBC on subsequent review. All 5 neoplasms demonstrated nested architecture and relatively uniform nuclei. Four patients had a known history of breast cancer (remote in 3 and concurrent in 1), but the metastases (3 liver, 1 lung) labeled for chromogranin and/or synaptophysin, prompting misdiagnosis as neuroendocrine neoplasm. In a fifth

Role of Histological Criteria and Immunohistochemical Markers in Predicting Risk of Malignancy in Parathyroid Neoplasms.

Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare neoplasm accounting for 0.5-6 % of primary hyperparathyroidism. Histological criteria are currently considered as established means to diagnose malignancy in parathyroid neoplasms; however, it does not accurately predict the risk of aggressive behaviour of PC. Immunohistochemical (IHC) markers have been used in the literature with variable results. This work was planned to study whether IHC markers would have any added advantage over histology in predicting outcome in parathyroid neoplasms. Two hundred twenty-seven parathyroid neoplasms were reviewed accord

[Long-Term Survival in Response to Multimodality Therapy in a Patient with Invasive Pancreatic Cancer with Cyst Formation].

The patient was a 61-year-old man. Computed tomography(CT)in April 2007 revealed a pancreatic cyst in the tail of the pancreas. Rapid enlargement was noted in November 2007, and the patient was referred to the surgery department. CT showed a cystic lesion containing a nodular shadow in the pancreatic tail. Tumor marker measurements yielded normal carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)and carbohydrate antigen 19-9(CA19-9)levels, but the duke pancreatic monoclonal antigen type 2(DUPAN-2)level was elevated. A diagnosis of mucinous cystic neoplasm(MCN)of the pancreas was made in December 2007, and distal p

Salivary duct carcinoma. Part I. A clinicopathologic evaluation and DNA image analysis of 13 cases with review of the literature.

Salivary duct carcinoma is an uncommon and relatively unknown clinically aggressive adenocarcinoma of salivary origin that histologically demonstrates a remarkable resemblance to invasive carcinoma of the breast. We report the clinicopathologic features of 13 cases that were also examined by image analysis for DNA ploidy. The results were then analyzed collectively with the less than 100 cases of salivary duct carcinoma reported in the English-language literature to define the characteristics of this unusual neoplasm. The 12 men and one woman averaged 68 years of age (range, 49 to 90 years). A

Complications of ovarian metastases from well-differentiated small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasms: a focus on bowel and ureteral obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian metastasis from small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasms (SBNENs) was traditionally considered rare, but more recent series have suggested a higher prevalence. This case series seeks to examine the features and outcomes of patients with neuroendocrine ovarian metastases (NOM). METHODS: Female patients with histologically confirmed well-differentiated SBNENs were identified using a prospectively maintained database (2014-2024). The electronic medical record was reviewed for details of diagnosis, histopathology, biomarkers, and outcomes among patients with and without NOM. RE

The prognostic impact of lymph-node dissection on lobectomy for pulmonary metastasis.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence and characteristics of lymph-node metastasis have not been thoroughly investigated in patients with pulmonary metastases from various primary neoplasms. The necessity of performing lymph-node dissection with pulmonary metastasectomy is unknown. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the database of the Metastatic Lung Tumor Study Group of Japan. Between November 1980 and June 2013, 4363 patients underwent resection of pulmonary metastases. After selecting for patients who underwent lobectomy, 683 patients (16%) were analysed. The presence of lymph-node metastasis, out

Kidney Carcinoma Ovarian Metastasis: Review of the Literature.

Ovarian metastasis is common with secondary tumors representing up to 15% of ovarian neoplasms. The malignancies most commonly involving the ovaries are carcinomas of the stomach, colon, breast, endocervix, endometrium, and lymphoma. Secondary ovarian involvement by kidney carcinoma occurs very rarely and is usually associated with widespread dissemination. We conducted a review of kidney carcinoma with ovarian metastasis in the literature using the keywords clear cell renal cell carcinoma, papillary renal cell carcinoma, chromophobe renal cell carcinoma collecting duct carcinoma, and ovarian

Splenic and pulmonary metastases from renal cell carcinoma: report of a case.

We report herein the case of a patient in whom pulmonary and splenic metastases from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were successfully treated by surgical excision. A 69-year-old man who underwent left nephrectomy for RCC 17 months before was suspected to have a pulmonary metastasis based on computed tomography (CT) findings. Partial resection of the left lower lobe was performed with thoracoscopic assistance. However, 4 months later, a splenic tumor, 6 cm in diameter, was detected by CT and ultrasonography, and a splenectomy was performed. Histologically, both resected specimens were diagnosed as

Clinicopathological features of thymic carcinomas and the impact of histopathological agreement on prognostical studies.

OBJECTIVES: Thymic carcinomas have wide ranges of reported survival. Interobserver agreement on diagnosis might affect prognostical studies. Clinicopathological features of thymic carcinomas were compared with thymic epithelial neoplasms in which pathologists disagreed upon. METHODS: Patients treated with thymic epithelial neoplasms were reviewed. Three thoracic pathologists independently classified all cases according to the World Health Organization classification. The study group comprised cases in which all pathologists agreed independently on thymic carcinomas. A disagreement group inclu

Occult nodal metastasis in major salivary gland malignancy: An update from the National Cancer Database.

OBJECTIVES: Malignant salivary gland tumors are rare neoplasms that are vastly heterogenous in their histological patterns and clinical behaviors. As a consequence, studies have lacked the robust sample sizes needed to define treatment strategies. In this study, we used the National Cancer Database to identify the incidence of occult nodal metastasis and effect on overall survival for the most common malignant salivary gland subtypes. A retrospective review of patients in the National Cancer Database with primary site malignancies of major salivary glands between 2004 and 2016 was performed. S

Results of salvage therapy after failure of initial treatment for advanced olfactory neuroblastoma.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory neuroblastoma is a very aggressive tumour with high rates of locoregional recurrence and distant metastasis. Therefore, salvage therapy plays an important role in control of these neoplasms. In this study, we present our experience and treatment outcomes for salvage therapy in patients with recurrent olfactory neuroblastoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 17 patients treated for advanced olfactory neuroblastoma during the last 15 years. RESULTS: The disease-free 5-year survival rate was 48% in all patients and 42% in the 17 patients with recurrence

Case Report: Renal metastasis of a gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor mimicking a primary renal carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, are prone to recurrence and metastasis. Despite improvements in prognosis with targeted treatments, such as imatinib, some patients develop metastatic GIST. Renal involvement in GIST is uncommon, and data on the diagnosis and treatment of GIST with renal metastasis remain limited. In this report, we describe the diagnostic and therapeutic regimen used for a patient with renal metastasis from GIST, providing an important reference for clinicians. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man unde

Anal Cancer with Atypical Brain and Cranial Bones Metastasis: About 2 Cases and Literature Review.

Canal anal cancer is a rare tumor that accounts for 2% of all colorectal neoplasms, with a low propensity for metastasis. The spread of anal squamous cell carcinoma to the brain is exceedingly rare and has been previously reported only 5 times in the medical literature. However, the first and only case of cranial bone metastasis from anal canal carcinoma was described in 2019. The purpose of this article is to add our cases to the limited literature for the management of metastatic anal cancer. The current study presents 2 cases of patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the anal ca
