Peripheral dentinogenic ghost cell tumor of the gingiva.

BACKGROUND: A dentinogenic ghost cell tumor is a locally invasive neoplasm that is characterized by ameloblastoma-like islands of epithelial cells in a mature connective tissue stroma. METHODS: A 43-year-old male patient presented a well-circumscribed sessile, exophytic mass of the gingiva with a diameter of 2 cm located in the canine area of the right maxilla. The lesion was enucleated. RESULTS: The lesion showed odontogenic epithelium, ghost cells, dentinoid material, and giant cells. The final microscopic diagnosis was a dentinogenic ghost cell tumor. CONCLUSIONS: A dentinogenic ghost ce

[Acral scleroderma presenting simultaneously with small-cell bronchial carcinoma: a paraneoplastic disease?].

The possible causal connection between systemic scleroderma and malignant neoplasms is a controversial issue. In the case of dermatomyositis, a malignant tumor is viewed as a possible trigger of the collagen disease; in contrast, scleroderma is suspected of causing tumors because of the long-term tissue fibrosis. A 68-year-old woman presented with acral scleroderma but already had metastatic bronchial carcinoma without evidence for previous pulmonary fibrosis. The rapid spread of the tumor and the sudden appearance of scleroderma suggest that in this case scleroderma could represent a paraneop

Fine needle aspiration appearance of extragastrointestinal stromal tumor. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) rarely develop outside the digestive tract and in the soft tissues of abdomen and retroperitoneum. Such tumors are designated extra-GISTs (EGISTs). Cytologic and immunocytochemical features of a case of EGIST are reported. CASE: A 54-year-old woman presented with a peritoneal mass, diameter 22 cm, adherent to the omentum and without a connection to the digestive tract. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the excised tumor showed high cellularity in two patterns: monotonous spindle cells were intermingled with a mildly atypical epithelioi

Bevacizumab-induced immune thrombocytopenia in an ovarian cancer patient with mixed connective tissue disease: case report and literature review.

Drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia is an adverse reaction marked by accelerated destruction of blood platelets. In cancer therapy, thrombocytopenia has many other causes including bone marrow suppression induced by chemotherapeutic agents, infection, and progression of cancer; drug-induced thrombocytopenia can easily be misdiagnosed or overlooked. Here, we present a case of an ovarian cancer patient with a history of mixed connective tissue disease who underwent surgery followed by treatment with paclitaxel, cisplatin, and bevacizumab. The patient developed acute isolated thrombocytopenia af

Toxicity study in a pig model of intraperitoneal collagenase as an "enzymatic scalpel" directed to break stroma in order to generate a new perspective for peritoneal carcinomatosis approach: an experimental research.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to measure the toxicity resulting from collagenase administration to the peritoneal cavity in a pig model as a preliminary step to break down the stroma surrounding tumors. METHODS: Eight pigs were treated with 2 different collagenase concentrations previously tested in rats by our group. Time and temperature were controlled using a peritoneal lavage system (PRS System, Combat Medical Ltd.) identical to that used in human surgeries through hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC); 2 additional pigs were treated with peritoneal lavage only. Samples of bloo

GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumor: a clinicopathological and molecular analysis of ten additional cases of an emerging entity.

We report 10 additional cases of GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumor to further delineate its clinicopathological and molecular spectrum. There were seven males and three females with a median age of 31 years (range 1.3 ~ 75 years). Five tumors arose in the oral cavity, one each in the stomach, uterine cervix, elbow, groin, and thigh. Histologically, all cases except one were composed of monomorphic round to epithelioid cells showing an infiltrative multinodular growth pattern. The neoplastic cells were surrounded by a rich network of capillary vessels. Vessel invasion or subendothelial protrusion

[Stomach cancer in patients with systemic non-differentiated connective tissue dysplasia].

The study was designed as a comparative analysis of clinical and anamnestic data and results of morphological studies of surgically obtained tissues from 61 patients with stomach cancer (SC) aged 29-78 yr with (group 1) and without (group 2) signs of connective tissue dysplasia (CTD). The groups had an identical structure of SC hystological types, but in group 1 the tumours were localized mainly in the stomach body (60.6%, p < 0.05) and in group 2 in the cardia (32.1%, p < 0.05). In group 1, SC was more frequently associated with chronic (sometimes multiple) ulcers outside the tumor (18.2 comp

Tumor(s) induced osteomalacia--a curious case of double trouble.

CONTEXT: We report a case of tumor-induced osteomalacia with evidence of synchronous multifocal fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) production. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to present a case of tumor-induced osteomalacia and to highlight the fact that incomplete removal of multifocal FGF23-producing tumors, which are not entirely picked up by functional imaging, could be the cause of treatment failure. SETTING: The patient was treated in the Department of Endocrinology of a tertiary care center in India. PATIENT: We report the case of a 42-year-old male with tumor-induced osteomalacia. INTERVENTI

Extra-articular diffuse-type giant cell tumour of the temporomandibular joint.

Diffuse-type giant cell tumour (DTGCT) is a benign but destructive proliferative disorder of the synovium of joint capsules, tendons and bursae. Lesions originating from the articular synovium may grow intra-articularly or expand widely extra-articularly. Rare cases may develop only in peri-articular tissues. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement is exceptional and only two cases of purely extra-articular TMJ-DTGCT have been reported. The authors report an additional case of extra-articular TMJ-DTGCT. The clinical features, histopathological characteristics, imaging modalities and diagnost

Fibrolipoma of the orbit.

A 47-year-old woman presented with a growing mass on the lateral rim of orbit. Orbital CT revealed a well-circumscribed soft tissue mass in the right lateral orbit, with focal hyperostosis of the adjacent zygomatic bone. MRI showed a lesion of mixed T1-signal intensity, which became hypointense after fat suppression. The lesion was excised, and the diagnosis of orbital fibrolipoma was made by histopathologic examination. There was no evidence of tumor after 12 months of follow-up. Orbital fibrolipoma is a rare variant of lipoma, with only 1 case described previously. It should be considered in

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23-Producing Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor with Extraordinary Morphology Causing Oncogenic Osteomalacia.

A possible cause of hypophosphatemia is paraneoplastic secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23). Tumors secreting FGF-23 are rare, mostly of mesenchymal origin, usually benign, and may be located anywhere in the body, including hands and feet, which are often not represented in conventional imaging. A 50-year-old woman presented with diffuse musculoskeletal pain and several fractures. Secondary causes of osteoporosis were excluded. Laboratory analysis revealed hypophosphatemia and elevated alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone, and FGF-23. Thus, oncogenic osteomalacia due to neopl

Nonremission and Recurrent Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia: A Retrospective Study.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome. It is curable by excision of the causative tumor. However, a few cases may persist or relapse after tumor resection. We aimed to investigate the rate of these events and related factors. We retrospectively studied TIO patients treated with surgery in a tertiary hospital. TIO was established based on a pathologic examination or the reversion of hypophosphatemia. Refractory TIO patients consisted of those with nonremission or recurrent hypophosphatemia after surgery. A total of 230 patients were confirmed as having TIO. After pr

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, fluorescence in situ hybridization and genomic copy number profiling study of seven cases.

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva was first described as a benign mesenchymal neoplasm of adipocytic differentiation having features of lipoblastoma, myxoid liposarcoma, and spindle cell lipoma. Prior studies of lipoblastoma-like tumor have evaluated PLAG1, HMGA2, and RB1 immunohistochemistry and DDIT3 rearrangement status, with results supporting its distinction from lipoblastoma and myxoid liposarcoma. However, absent RB1 expression was reported in a majority of tested cases, suggesting that lipoblastoma-like tumor may have underlying 13q alterations and be related to RB1-deleted soft tis

EWSR1-fusion-negative, SMARCB1-deficient primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma.

Primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma (PPMS) is a recently defined rare neoplasm with histological and molecular similarity to extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma. To date, 20 cases have been reported. A 48-year-old man presented with a huge mass filling the right hemithorax and extending into the tracheobronchial system. Histological findings were consistent with PPMS. Immunohistochemistry was positive for vimentin, CD10, and EMA, but other lineage-specific markers were negative. SMARCB1 (INI1) expression was lost in the tumour cells. FISH analysis (EWSR1, FUS, NR4A3, and SMARCB1) revealed no abno
