Diagnosis and behavior of juvenile rhabdomyosarcoma.

The main problems in the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma are 1) distinction of undifferentiated examples from other small cell malignancies, especially soft-tissue Ewing's tumor and lymphoma; 2) distinction of spindling examples from fibrosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, polyhistioma, and other sarcomas; 3) recognition of minimal criteria on small samples such as needle biopsy specimens or frozen sections; and 4) recognition of rhabdomyosarcoma in uncommon sites such as bone (mandible), perineum, retroperitoneum, and chest. In 95 pediatric cases diagnosed and treated at R

Fibrosing inflammatory pseudotumors of the central skull base.

The most important step in the differential diagnosis of mass lesions of the central skull base is to rule out malignant neoplasms. However, nonneoplastic lesions, such as infections or nonspecific inflammatory lesions of the skull base, can mimic malignant processes. In this study, the authors analyzed seven cases of nonneoplastic noninfectious mass-forming lesions involving the central skull base. In most cases, malignant processes were suspected at the initial phase of diagnostic work-up, but subsequent histologic examinations revealed that these lesions consisted of inflammatory cells and

Clinicopathologic study of calcifying fibrous tumor of the gastrointestinal tract: a case series.

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign mesenchymal lesion known to arise at multiple body sites that may clinically mimic other more aggressive lesions in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In this study we describe the clinicopathologic findings of 28 GI tract CFTs. Tumors predominantly arose in middle-aged adults with a slight female predominance. The most commonly involved sites were small bowel and colon, followed by stomach and appendix. Tumors ranged from 0.3 to 9.3 cm (median 1.4 cm), and submucosa was the most commonly involved layer. All tumors were well circumscribed and unenc

Orbital fibrous dysplasia with soft tissue hamartoma--a variant of Mazabraud's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mazabraud's syndrome was first described, by Mazabraud et al. as a rare disease, associated with single or multiple intramuscular myxomas with monostotic or polyostotic forms of fibrous dyplasia, PURPOSE: Reports of this syndrome is rare and usually associated with myoxomatas. The authors would want to report the occurrence of this rare case associated with a hamartoma as basis for record and future studies. METHOD: An adult male came to the institution 4 years ago complaining of a right unilateral proptosis that he had since childhood. However, proptosis progressed in a month's

Telomerase activity in benign bone tumors and tumor-like lesions.

To assess the role and status of telomerase activity in benign bone tumors and tumor-like lesions, we performed telomerase assays in four giant cell tumors of bone, four fibrous dysplasias, three osteochondromas, three aneurysmal bone cysts, two osteoblastomas, one juvenile bone cyst and one myositis ossificans. A very sensitive non-radioactive TRAP assay was applied. Low level activity was detected in 7 of 18 tumor samples (38.9%), and high level activity was not detected in any of the cases. Telomerase activity was observed in all patients with osteochondromas, in two of the three aneurysmal

Biological study of R24 mouse monoclonal antibody in patients undergoing thoracotomy for pulmonary metastases from soft tissue sarcoma.

The disialoganglioside GD3 is expressed on the surface of soft tissue sarcoma, malignant melanoma, and other malignant cells and is, therefore, a potential target for therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. Intravenously administered R24, a murine IgG3 monoclonal antibody to GD3, induces inflammation and tumor regression at sites of metastatic malignant melanoma. R24 5 mg/m2 was given intravenously every other day for six doses to 10 patients with pulmonary metastases from a primary soft tissue sarcoma of the extremity for whom thoracotomy was planned. Resected tissue was available from 7 patients.

Clinical hyperthermia: results of a phase I trial employing hyperthermia alone or in combination with external beam or interstitial radiotherapy.

Forty-three patients with advanced, locally accessible neoplasms were treated in a Phase I clinical trial employing hyperthermia alone or hyperthermia combined with either high-dose-rate external beam or low-dose-rate interstitial radiotherapy (interstitial thermoradiography). All patients had failed previous conventional therapeutic attempts, including various combinations of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Many had received tolerance or near tolerance levels of prior radiation that restricted dose prescriptions in this trial to subcurative values. A number of tumors with differe

Benign solitary fibrous tumour of the pleura: a clinical review and report of six cases.

Primary tumours of the pleura are commonly divided into two major categories: diffuse and localised. Whereas the diffuse variant is known for its association with asbestos and its poor outcome, the localised one is rare and remains a subject of controversy. Electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry have recently demonstrated that these tumours are of mesenchymal rather than mesothelial origin, and therefore the term "localised mesothelioma" was abandoned. Such tumours are now called solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura (SFTP). The Authors describe a series of 6 cases of benign solitary fi

Aortic wall sarcoma with tumor emboli and peripheral ischemia: case report with review of literature.

Primary malignant tumors of the aorta are rare, only a handful of isolated cases having been described in the literature. Preoperative diagnosis of these tumors is more the exception than the rule. Diagnosis of aortic tumors is difficult as they can mimic many diverse conditions including atherosclerosis. We report a patient who presented with lower extremity claudication, renal infarction, and diffuse atherosclerosis and who was found to have tumor fragments in blood clots but no evidence of a primary tumor. Immunohistochemistry narrowed the differential diagnosis to a type of sarcoma. Six mo

Central Giant Cell Granuloma of the Mandible and Maxilla: A Clinicopathological Study of 21 Cases.

Background Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) presents as a locally invasive, intraosseous lesion characterized by the accumulation of multinucleated giant cells amidst a matrix of hemorrhage and reactive fibrous tissue that infiltrates bone trabeculae. This idiopathic non-neoplastic proliferative lesion primarily affects the mandible, typically presenting as either unilocular or multilocular radiolucencies on X-rays. Although trauma or intraosseous hemorrhages are potential triggers, the precise histogenesis and etiology remain unclear. CGCG predominantly occurs in children and young adults,

Synovial sarcoma presenting as an intra-articular mass in a pediatric patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma (SS) is one of the reported sarcomas in the pediatric and adult populations. Delay in diagnosis and treatment is common in SS cases. SS may be excised before the correct diagnosis is made. CASE PRESENTATION: we present a case involving a 4-year-old boy who visited our service with complaints of left knee pain and limited knee flexion. Initially, the child was diagnosed with osteochondromatosis. Surgical excision was opted, and initial histopathological examination revealed a fibrous histiocytoma. The slide and blocks were then brought to the King Faisal Specialist

Extra-uterine Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma of the Stomach Mimicking a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour: A Case Report.

Extra-uterine endometrial stromal sarcoma (EESS) is a rare mesenchymal tumour, and primary gastric involvement represents an exceptionally unusual presentation. Because such tumours present as ulcerated submucosal masses, they are easily misdiagnosed as gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST), making accurate, timely recognition critical for appropriate management. A 53-year-old woman presented with a five-day history of epigastric pain, low-grade fever, and malaise. Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed an 11 cm vascular mass on the greater curvature of the stomach with splenic-hilum and

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma occurring at distal/acral extremity sites: clinicopathological and molecular study of 26 cases highlighting frequent myxoid histology and site-dependent genotypic variation.

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of borderline malignancy (locally recurring, rarely metastasizing), most often involving the limbs, trunk, and head/neck. Rarely, AFH may involve unusual locations. Herein, we characterize the clinicopathologic features of 26 AFH of the distal extremities, including acral sites. The tumors occurred in 19 females and 7 males ranging in age from 12 to 76 years (median, 23 years). Tumors involved the upper (n = 19) and lower (n = 6) distal extremity; one affected an unspecified digital site. Twenty-two cases occurred in acral l
