KerNet: A Novel Deep Learning Approach for Keratoconus and Sub-Clinical Keratoconus Detection Based on Raw Data of the Pentacam HR System.

Keratoconus is one of the most severe corneal diseases, which is difficult to detect at the early stage (i.e., sub-clinical keratoconus) and possibly results in vision loss. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end deep learning approach, called KerNet, which processes the raw data of the Pentacam HR system (consisting of five numerical matrices) to detect keratoconus and sub-clinical keratoconus. Specifically, we propose a novel convolutional neural network, called KerNet, containing five branches as the backbone with a multi-level fusion architecture. The five branches receive five matri

Applications of Digital Microscopy and Densely Connected Convolutional Neural Networks for Automated Quantification of Babesia-Infected Erythrocytes.

BACKGROUND: Clinical babesiosis is diagnosed, and parasite burden is determined, by microscopic inspection of a thick or thin Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smear. However, quantitative analysis by manual microscopy is subject to error. As such, methods for the automated measurement of percent parasitemia in digital microscopic images of peripheral blood smears could improve clinical accuracy, relative to the predicate method. METHODS: Individual erythrocyte images were manually labeled as "parasite" or "normal" and were used to train a model for binary image classification. The best model w

Use of Machine Learning for the Estimation of Down- and Up-Link Field Exposure in Multi-Source Indoor WiFi Scenarios.

A novel Machine Learning (ML) method based on Neural Networks (NN) is proposed to assess radio-frequency (RF) exposure generated by WiFi sources in indoor scenarios. The aim was to build an NN capable of addressing the complexity and variability of real-life exposure setups, including the effects of not only down-link transmission access points (APs) but also up-link transmission by different sources (e.g. laptop, printers, tablets, and smartphones). The NN was fed with easy to be found data, such as the position and type of WiFi sources (APs, clients, and other users) and the position and mat

[Identification of geographical origins of Cordyceps based on data of amino acids with self-organizing map neural network].

In this study, data of amino acids of Cordyceps samples from Qinghai and Tibet was analyzed with self-organizing map neural network. A model of XY-Fused network was established with the content of 8 major amino acids and total amino acids for the identification of geographical origins of Cordyceps from Qinghai and Tibet. It had the prediction accuracy of 83.3% for the test set. In addition, data mining indicated that methionine was a special kind of amino acid in Cordyceps which could serve as a marker to identify its geographical origins. On this basis, the content ratio of methionine to tota

Deep Learning-Based Nuclear Lobe Count Method for Differential Count of Neutrophils.

Differentiating neutrophils based on the count of nuclear lobulation is useful for diagnosing various hematological disorders, including megaloblastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and sepsis. It has been reported that one-fifth of sepsis-infected patients worldwide died between 1990 and 2017. Notably, fewer nuclear-lobed and stab-formed neutrophils develop in the peripheral blood during sepsis. This abnormality can serve as an early diagnostic criterion. However, testing this feature is a complex and time-consuming task that is rife with human error. For this reason, we apply deep learnin

[Recognition of S1 and S2 heart sounds with two-stream convolutional neural networks].

Auscultation of heart sounds is an important method for the diagnosis of heart conditions. For most people, the audible component of heart sound are the first heart sound (S1) and the second heart sound (S2). Different diseases usually generate murmurs at different stages in a cardiac cycle. Segmenting the heart sounds precisely is the prerequisite for diagnosis. S1 and S2 emerges at the beginning of systole and diastole, respectively. Locating S1 and S2 accurately is beneficial for the segmentation of heart sounds. This paper proposed a method to classify the S1 and S2 based on their properti

[A heart sound classification method based on joint decision of extreme gradient boosting and deep neural network].

Heart sound is one of the common medical signals for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. This paper studies the binary classification between normal or abnormal heart sounds, and proposes a heart sound classification algorithm based on the joint decision of extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and deep neural network, achieving a further improvement in feature extraction and model accuracy. First, the preprocessed heart sound recordings are segmented into four status, and five categories of features are extracted from the signals based on segmentation. The first four categories of features are

Comparison of different predicting models to assist the diagnosis of spinal lesions.

In neurosurgical or orthopedic clinics, the differential diagnosis of lower back pain is often time-consuming and costly. This is especially true when there are several candidate diagnoses with similar symptoms that might confuse clinic physicians. Therefore, methods for the efficient differential diagnosis can help physicians to implement the most appropriate treatment and achieve the goal of pain reduction for their patients. In this study, we applied data-mining techniques from artificial intelligence technologies, in order to implement a computer-aided auxiliary differential diagnosis for a

Developing a Predictive Model for Plasmodium knowlesi-Susceptible Areas in Malaysia Using Geospatial Data and Artificial Neural Networks.

Plasmodium knowlesi is an emerging species for malaria in Malaysia, particularly in East Malaysia. This infection contributes to almost half of all malaria cases and deaths in Malaysia and poses a challenge in eradicating malaria. The aim of this study was to develop a predictive model for P. knowlesi susceptibility areas in Sabah, Malaysia, using geospatial data and artificial neural networks (ANNs). Weekly malaria cases from 2013 to 2014 were used to identify the malaria hotspot areas. The association of malaria cases with environmental factors (elevation, water bodies, and population densit

Acrophobia Quantified by EEG Based on CNN Incorporating Granger Causality.

The aim of this study is to quantify acrophobia and provide safety advices for high-altitude workers. Considering that acrophobia is a fuzzy quantity that cannot be accurately evaluated by conventional detection methods, we propose a comprehensive solution to quantify acrophobia. Specifically, this study simulates a virtual reality environment called High-altitude Plank Walking Challenge, which provides a safe and controlled experimental environment for subjects. Besides, a method named Granger Causality Convolutional Neural Network (GCCNN) combining convolutional neural network and Granger ca

Towards the interpretation of complex visual hallucinations in terms of self-reorganization of neural networks.

Patients suffering from dementia with Lewy body (DLB) often see complex visual hallucinations (CVH). Despite many pathological, clinical, and neuroimaging studies, the mechanism of CVH remains unknown. One possible scenario is that top-down information is being used to compensate for the lack of bottom-up information. To investigate this possibility and understand the underlying mathematical structure of the CVH mechanism, we propose a simple computational model of synaptic plasticity with particular focus on the effect of selective damage to the bottom-up network on self-reorganization. We sh

Sleep Posture Classification Using Bed Sensor Data and Neural Networks.

Sleep posture has been shown to be important in monitoring health conditions such as congestive heart failure (CHF), sleep apnea, pressure ulcers, and even blood pressure abnormalities. In this paper, we investigate the use of four hydraulic bed transducers placed underneath the mattress to classify different sleep postures. For classification, we employed a simple neural network. Different combinations of parameters were studied to determine the best configuration. Data were collected on four major postures from 58 subjects. We report the results of classification for different combinations o

A graph-based N-body approximation with application to stochastic neighbor embedding.

We propose a novel approximation technique, bubble approximation (BA), for repulsion forces in an N-body problem, where attraction has a limited range and repulsion acts between all points. These kinds of systems occur frequently in dimension reduction and graph drawing. Like tree codes, the established N-body approximation method, BA replaces several point-to-point computations by one area-to-point computation. Novelty of BA is to consider not only the magnitudes but also the directions of forces from the area. Therefore, its area-to-point approximations are applicable anywhere in the space.

Computational modeling of reading in semantic dementia: comment on Woollams, Lambon Ralph, Plaut, and Patterson (2007).

Woollams, Lambon Ralph, Plaut, and Patterson reported detailed data on reading in 51 cases of semantic dementia. They simulated some aspects of these data using a connectionist parallel distributed processing (PDP) triangle model of reading. We argue here that a different model of reading, the dual route cascaded (DRC) model of Coltheart, Rastle, Perry, Langdon, and Ziegler (2001), not only provides a more accurate simulation of these aspects of reading in semantic dementia than does the PDP model but also provides highly accurate simulations of other aspects of reading in this disorder that t

The application of the neural network on Morse code recognition for users with physical impairments.

Morse code is a simple, speedy and low cost means of communication composed of a series of dots, dashes and space intervals. Each tone element (either a dot, dash or space interval) is transmitted by sending a signal for a defined length of time. This poses a challenge as the automatic recognition of Morse code is dependent upon maintaining a stable typing rate. In this paper, a suitable adaptive automatic recognition method, combining the least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm with a neural network, was applied to this problem. The method presented in this paper is divided into five modules: space

Automatic diagnosis of neuro-muscular diseases using neural network.

An automatic diagnostic tool for neuromuscular diseases, based on the feature extraction and classification of myoelectric patterns using neural network is described. Electromyogram (EMG) signals are extracted from the patients during maximal contraction using needle electrodes. This EMG signal is digitized at a rate of 1000 samples/second. The myoelectric signal is divided into many time segments. Five time domain features are extracted from each of these segments and are averaged over the segments to obtain one feature set. This is applied to the neural network for classification. Results ar

Privacy-Preserving Framework for Multi-Institutional Medical Time-Series Analysis via Homomorphic Encryption: Design and Development Study.

BACKGROUND: The development of robust medical AI for knowledge discovery and decision support commonly necessitates large-scale datasets from multiple institutions. However, such data aggregation is severely constrained by privacy regulations and the inherent risk of sensitive information leakage, making it difficult to navigate the utility-privacy trade-off. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to design a secure multiparty deep learning system that enables privacy-preserving modeling from distributed medical time-series data without centralizing raw information or exposing model parameters. Webcam-Based Pain Measurement Using Pupillary Diameter.

Pupillometry can be used as a method for monitoring pain. There are experimental conditions under which standard pupillometry equipment cannot be used. Studying the effects of different pulse forms used for transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is one such task. The aim was to create a system for recording pupil diameter based on a web camera because it can be synchronised with external equipment, which allows the diameter to be recorded simultaneously with other physiological signals. A markerless system for recording and analysing pupil diameter using deep neural networks was develop
