Pontiella agarivorans sp. nov., a novel marine anaerobic bacterium capable of degrading macroalgal polysaccharides and fixing nitrogen.

Marine macroalgae produce abundant and diverse polysaccharides, which contribute substantially to the organic matter exported to the deep ocean. Microbial degradation of these polysaccharides plays an important role in the turnover of macroalgal biomass. Various members of the Planctomycetes-Verrucomicrobia-Chlamydia (PVC) superphylum are degraders of polysaccharides in widespread anoxic environments. In this study, we isolated a novel anaerobic bacterial strain NLcol2T from microbial mats on the surface of marine sediments offshore Santa Barbara, CA, USA. Based on 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gen

Differential influences of forest floor-pyrolyzed biochar-derived and leached dissolved organic matter interaction with natural iron-bearing minerals in forest subsoil on the formation of mineral-associated soil organic matter.

The vertical sequestration of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by iron minerals along the soil profile is assumed to be central to the long-term storage of the soil organic matter (SOM) pool. However, there is limited information available about how the interaction between DOM and natural iron-bearing minerals shape mineral SOM associations quantitatively and qualitatively in forest subsoils. Here, we systematically investigated the influences of forest organic layer-pyrolyzed biochar-derived DOM (BDOM) and leached DOM (LDOM) on quantity, molecular composition, and diversity of deposition layer-

Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of nanomaterials on carbon metabolism in plants.

Agricultural nanotechnology offers innovative strategies to enhance crop productivity by modulating fundamental physiological processes in plants. Despite growing evidence that nanomaterials (NMs) can significantly promote crop growth, a standardized theoretical framework explaining the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. This review proposes a systematic framework to elucidate how NMs positively regulate plant carbon assimilation and partitioning to ultimately enhance crop yield. We categorize internal carbon flow into three interconnected modules:(1) inorganic-organic carbon inter-convers

Effect of Nitrogen-Containing Regulators on Graphene Quantum Dot/ZIF-8 Composites for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with distinct optical responses were prepared from pyrene using urea, melamine, and 2,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid as nitrogen-containing regulators and were subsequently combined with ZIF-8 for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction. FT-IR, Raman, XRD, optical spectroscopy, representative high-magnification transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed regulator-dependent structural, compositional, and optical differences. XPS detected surface nitrogen in all three GQD samples, with the highest N content in y-GQDs, while the relati

Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia Synthesis: Reaction Mechanisms, Catalytic Materials, and Future Perspectives.

The large-scale production and utilization of nitrogen-containing compounds have greatly promoted the development of modern agriculture and the chemical industry, but have also resulted in increasingly severe nitrate contamination and an imbalance of the nitrogen cycle. The efficient conversion of nitrate into value-added ammonia not only contributes to pollutant remediation but also provides a promising route for green ammonia synthesis. Owing to its mild reaction conditions, potentially lower environmental impact, and compatibility with renewable electricity, electrocatalytic nitrate reducti…

Promising anti-proliferative indolic benzenesulfonamides alter mechanisms with sulfonamide nitrogen substituents.

Agents that cause apoptotic cell death by interfering with tubulin dynamics, such as vinblastine and paclitaxel, are an important class of chemotherapeutics. Unfortunately, these compounds are substrates for multidrug resistance (MDR) pumps, allowing cancer cells to gain resistance to these chemotherapeutics. The indolesulfonamide family of tubulin inhibitors are not excluded by MDR pumps and have a promising activity profile, although their high lipophilicity is a pharmacokinetic limitation for their clinical use. Here we present a new family of N-indolyl-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzenesulfonamide de

Increased diurnal difference of NO2 concentrations and its impact on recent ozone pollution in eastern China in summer.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a key tropospheric O3 precursor. Since 2013, efforts to decrease air pollution in China have driven substantial declines in annual NO2 concentrations, whereas ozone (O3) concentrations have increased. Based on nationwide NO2 observations and a regional air quality model (WRF-CMAQ), we analyzed trends in the diurnal difference (DD, the difference between nighttime and daytime concentrations) of NO2 concentrations across eastern China and in five national urban agglomerations (UAs) from 2014 to 2021, and explored the factors underlying such changes and the potential imp

Synthesis, structure and characterization of novel Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes with the condensation product of 2-formylpyridine and selenosemicarbazide Antiproliferative activity of the synthesized complexes and related selenosemicarbazone complexes.

Two novel Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes with the condensation product of 2-formylpyridine and selenosemicarbazide were synthesized. The structure of Cd(II) complex was determined by X-ray crystallography. The ligand is coordinated in a neutral form via pyridine and azomethine nitrogen atoms and the selenium donor. The cadmium ion completes its five-coordination by two chloride ligands, forming a square-pyramidal geometry. The structure of Zn(II) complex was established by analysis of spectroscopic data, which indicated coordination of the ligand as a bidentate via the selenium and the azomethine

A randomized controlled trial comparing embryo vitrification with slush nitrogen to liquid nitrogen in women undergoing frozen embryo transfer: embryology and clinical outcomes.

STUDY QUESTION: Does the use of slush nitrogen (SN) for embryo vitrification improve embryo transfer outcomes compared to liquid nitrogen (LN)? SUMMARY ANSWER: SN is a safe method for embryo preservation and significantly improves post-warming survival rates during repeated vitrification-warming cycles; however, after a single freeze-thaw cycle, pregnancy outcomes are not improved when embryos are vitrified with SN compared to LN. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: SN is a combination of solid and LN, with a temperature lower than regular LN, and it is an alternative to conventional LN in achieving a fa

Spatio-temporal distribution and production-consumption dynamics of nitric oxide in coastal waters off Qingdao, China.

Nitric oxide (NO) is an atmospheric pollutant and climate forcer, as well as an important intermediate in the marine nitrogen cycle. However, the distributions of NO in the ocean and its production-consumption mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the spatial distributions of surface NO in the Jiaozhou Bay and adjacent coastal waters off Qingdao based on two cruises conducted in autumn 2023 and spring 2024. Dissolved NO concentrations in the surface seawater ranged from 315.0 to 446.7 pmol L-1 (average: 355.5 ± 44.6 pmol L-1) and 117.4-299.8 pmol L-1 (average: 219.8 ± 63.5 pmol L-…

Inverse Vulcanization of a Natural Monoene with Sulfur as Sustainable Electrochemically Active Materials for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

A novel soluble copolymer poly(S-MVT) was synthesized using a relatively quick one-pot solvent-free method, inverse vulcanization. Both of the two raw materials are sustainable, i.e., elemental sulfur is a by-product of the petroleum industry and 4-Methyl-5-vinylthiazole (MVT) is a natural monoene compound. The microstructure of poly(S-MVT) was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, XPS spectroscopy, XRD, DSC SEM, and TEM. Test results indicated that the copolymers possess protonated thiazole nitrogen atoms, meso/macroporous structure, and solubility in tetrahydrofuran and chloroform. Moreover, the i

Probabilistic analysis of during cycle-based highway vehicle emission factors.

A probabilistic methodology for quantifying intervehicle variability and fleet average uncertainty in highway vehicle emission factors is developed. The methodology features the use of empirical distributions of emissions measurement data to characterize variability and the use of bootstrap simulation to characterize uncertainty. For the base emission rate as a function of mileage accumulation under standard conditions, a regression-based approach was employed in which the residual error terms were included in the probabilistic analysis. Probabilistic correction factors for different driving c

Ca/Fe-modified drinking water treatment residue with Vallisneria natans controls algal blooms via phosphorus transformation and smicrobial network shifts.

Internal phosphorus (P) loading is a key driver of algal blooms in shallow lakes, yet submerged macrophyte (SM) restoration alone often fails because clear water also favors epiphytic filamentous algae and regime shifts. We constructed a co-remediation system combining Ca/Fe-modified drinking water treatment residue (Ca/Fe-DWTR) with Vallisneria natans and ran a 183-day microcosm experiment to reveal how sediment P transformation coupled with macrophyte restoration controls water quality and suppresses two different algal blooms. Co-remediation markedly reduced sediment total-P and mobile-P wh

Cryosurgical ablation of soft tissue sarcomas: a phase I trial of feasibility and safety.

BACKGROUND: Cryosurgery is a therapeutic method of treating neoplastic tissue by freezing in situ to achieve devitalization. Cell death results from exposure to severe cold (below -40 degrees C for at least 1 minute) as well as from the process of freezing and thawing, which disrupts cellular integrity. Modern cryosurgical technique involves insertion of hollow probes into the tumor, through which circulating liquid nitrogen and gaseous nitrogen can achieve tissue and tumor freezing and thawing for tumor control. Cryoablation is now a recognized approach to the treatment of various malignant t

Cryogenic photomotion enabled by phonon-engineered sp-sp2 carbon frameworks via reversible photothermal buoyancy switching.

Cryogenic liquids dissipate local heat rapidly, which makes contactless light-driven motion difficult to achieve. Here we show that hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne, a porous sp-sp2 carbon framework with suppressed lateral heat spreading, retains photothermal energy near an illuminated region and drives reversible buoyancy switching in liquid nitrogen. Multiscale analysis shows that reduced acoustic-phonon group velocities and an increased density of high-frequency vibrational modes sustain a localized hotspot even when the film is immersed in a bath at 77 K. Under illumination at 110 mW cm-2,

Effects of Nonantibiotic Organic Pollutants on Soil Resistance and Element Cycling Functions in Greenhouse Soils: A Nationwide Survey in China.

Greenhouse farming expansion worsens soil antimicrobial resistance. Environmental impacts of antibiotics are well-documented, yet nonantibiotic organic pollutants (NAOPs) remain vastly understudied. A nationwide soil comparison examined four common NAOP effects on elemental cycling genes (ECGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in paired greenhouse and open-field samples. Greenhouse soils held far richer nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling genes and markedly higher ARG loads. Their microbiome featured more complex, tightly synergistic ecological interaction networks. Structural equat

Urea cycle defects in adulthood: clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment in genetically encoded hepatic metabolic disorders with a potential for encephalopathy.

Hyperammonaemia is an important cause for encephalopathy. Ammonia is the waste product of amino acid degradation and cannot be excreted via urine. Ammonia is metabolized to water-soluble urea via the urea cycle. Hyperammonaemia not only occurs during acute liver failure, but also in rare genetically determined defects of enzymes or transporters involved in the urea cycle resulting in elevated ammonia concentrations. Enzyme defects include deficiency of carbamylphosphate synthase, N-acetylglutamate synthase, ornithine transcarbamylase, argininosuccinate lyase and arginase, transporter defects a

Ammonia in liver diseases: A glimpse into the controversies and consensus.

Ammonia is a byproduct of the metabolism of nitrogen-containing micro and macromolecules. The key source of bodily ammonia in humans is the small intestine, from diet, luminal bacterial activity, and deamination of glutamine in enterocytes. It is disposed of from the system, mainly in the liver, through the urea cycle. Physiologically, ammonia plays a minor role in acid-base homeostasis. It is the critical molecule implicated in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy. Liver disease is the most common cause of hyperammonemia, while others include urea cycle defects, infections, and drugs. T

Iron cycle-enhanced anaerobic ammonium oxidation in microaerobic granular sludge.

Granule-based partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (PN/A) is an energy-efficient approach for treating ammonia wastewater. When treating low-strength ammonia wastewater, the stable synergy between PN and anammox is however difficult to establish due to unstable dissolved oxygen control. Here, we proposed, the PN/A granular sludge formed by a micro-oxygen-driven iron redox cycle with continuous aeration (0.42 ± 0.10 mg-O2/L) as a novel strategy to achieve stable and efficient nitrogen (N) removal. 240-day bioreactor operation showed that the iron-involved reactor had 37 % higher
