Pituitary tumours are a common cause of functional impairment and degeneration of the anterior visual pathway. Depending on localization and size, they clinically manifest as initially reversible visual field defects. As part of interdisciplinary tumour management, ophthalmologic examinations are of particular importance concerning diagnostics, indication for tumour resection and documentation of functional surgical results. Based on the relationship between clinical dysfunction and manifest atrophy, together with the patient's age and the duration of symptoms, the ophthalmologist can provide

The article describes a case of Goldenhar syndrome that had been diagnosed by an ophthalmologist in a medical consultation by school bullying due to a choristoma. A 15-year-old male patient, who had a nodular lesion with hair in the inferior temporal corneal-limbo-conjunctival of the left eye, was reported. He also had a facial asymmetry, with mild mandibular hypoplasia and malformation of the left external ear, where only an auricular appendage was formed. He denied similar family history and the history of genetic diseases, but revealed that his mother had used ibuprofen during the first 3 m

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has led to a worldwide pandemic. This pandemic presents a huge challenge for the healthcare system and also for ophthalmologists. Previous studies and case reports indicated that SARS-CoV‑2 also infects the conjunctiva resulting in conjunctivitis. In addition, infectious virus particles in the tear fluid can be potential sources of infection; however, the detection of SARS-CoV‑2 RNA in the tear fluid has rarely been successful. Although isolated conjunctival involvement is highly unlikely

Visual symptoms, such as photophobia and blurred vision, are common in patients with concussion. Such symptoms may be accompanied by abnormalities of specific eye movements, such as saccades and convergence, or accommodation deficits. The high frequency of visual involvement in concussion is not surprising, since more than half of the brain's pathways are dedicated to vision and eye movement control. These areas include many that are most vulnerable to head trauma, including the frontal and temporal lobes. Vision and eye movement testing is important at the bedside and on the sidelines of athl

The authors present the ophthamological finding in a patient who at the age of 4.5 months was admitted due to a finding of total bilateral congenital cataract. The patient was observed by a neurologist for central hypotonia and mental retardation. Upon a complex examination of the patient, suspicion of Lowe syndrome was stated, which was confirmed by a metabolic examination and also by genetic tests. Upon an examination of the family, a genetic defect (mutation of OCRL1 gene) was confirmed also in the mother of the patient. A mild subcapsular opacification was present in the mother, beneath th

Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare disease characterized by slowly progressive atrophy affecting facial subcutaneous tissues, including the underlying muscles and osteocartilaginous structures. Various periocular, ocular, and neuro-ophthalmological manifestations have been described in Parry-Romberg syndrome. The most common periocular disorders include enophthalmos, eyelid, and orbit alterations. The most frequent ocular disorders include corneal and retinal changes, and the most common neuro-ophthalmological disorders involve optic nerve, ocular motor and pupillary dysfunction. Besides the cha

Nutritional supplements are widely taken by the general population and several of these products are marketed specifically to improve eye health. The aim of this review is to summarise the evidence for the benefit of supplementation with antioxidant vitamins and other micronutrients for three of the most common eye diseases of the elderly: age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract and dry eye syndrome (DES). Although the potential importance of diet and nutrition in these conditions is strongly supported by data from observational studies, evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCT

Sialidosis is a lysosomal storage disease caused by deficit of neuraminidase. It is an autosomal recessive disease, heterogeneous in its onset, presentation and prognosis. We report a case of a male patient with molecular and enzymatic confirmation of the diagnosis. Symptoms began at age 26 with reduced visual acuity, bilateral cherry-red spots and later myoclonus. A brother, now deceased, had the same confirmed disease. We describe the symptoms and clinical findings of the patient, as well review the current knowledge on the topic. With this report, we highlight the importance of a clinical h

Prevalence of skin and eye disorders in African onchocerciasis (river blindness) is well documented. However, less is known about their joint occurrence. Information on concurrence may improve our understanding of disease pathogenesis and is required to estimate the disease burden of onchocerciasis. We analysed data from 765 individuals from forest villages in the Kumba and Ngambe Health districts, Cameroon. These data were collected in 1998, as baseline data for the evaluation of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control. Concurrence of symptoms was assessed using logistic regression.

Palinopsy or perseveration of a pre-seen image is impaired visual perception as preservation or repeated occurrence of a visual image of an object after its disappearance from the field of vision. Patients with palinopsy are rather frequently encountered in neurological practice; however, they may first visit an ophthalmologist in some cases. The author describes a few cases in which palinopsy was the first manifestation of cerebral arteriovenous malformation, ischemic stroke, and multiple sclerosis, as well as a case of visual perseverations while using narcotic drugs. The correct evaluation

Modern Ophthalmology is currently experiencing a boom in anterior segment analysis tools that can increasingly gather information with one short measurement. These systems are based e.g. on so-called Scheimpflug (Pentacam, Galilei), slitlamp, and Placido technologies (Orbscan IIz) and other measurement systems. They help in analyzing the cornea in detail, including calculation of corneal wavefront. In addition, morphological and anatomical parameters such as anterior chamber depth, pachymetry, chamber angle, and lens densitometry can be analyzed. That makes these new technologies of interest f…

As survival of preterm infants improves, the long-term care of consequent ophthalmic problems is an expanding field. Preterm birth can inflict a host of challenges on the developing ocular system, resulting in the visual manifestations of varied significance and pathological scope. The ophthalmic condition most commonly associated with preterm birth is retinopathy of prematurity, which has the potential to result in devastating vision loss. However, the visual compromise from increased incidence of refractive errors, strabismus, and cerebral vision impairment has significant impact on visual f

From a neuro-ophthalmologic standpoint, five areas may be affected by psychogenic disease: (1) vision, including visual acuity and visual field; (2) ocular motility and alignment; (3) pupillary size and reactivity; (4) eyelid position and function; and (5) corneal and facial sensation. The physician faced with a patient complaining of decreased vision or some other disturbance related to the afferent or efferent visual systems for which there is no apparent biologic explanation has three responsibilities. First, the physician must ascertain that an organic disorder is not present. Second, the
