PURPOSE: Optic disc drusen (ODD) are found in up to 2.4% of the population and are known to cause visual field defects. The purpose of the current study was to investigate how quantitatively estimated volume and anatomic location of ODD influence optic nerve function.
METHODS: Anatomic location, volume of ODD, and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer and macular ganglion cell layer thickness were assessed in 37 ODD patients using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography. Volume of ODD was calculated by manual segmentation of ODD in 97 B-scans per eye. Anatomic characteristics we

Due to the increasing prevalence of high myopia around the world, structural and functional damages to the optic nerve in high myopia has recently attracted much attention. Evidence has shown that high myopia is related to the development of glaucomatous or glaucoma-like optic neuropathy, and that both have many common features. These similarities often pose a diagnostic challenge that will affect the future management of glaucoma suspects in high myopia. In this review, we summarize similarities and differences in optic neuropathy arising from non-pathologic high myopia and glaucoma by consid

Glaucoma comprises a group of disorders of the optic nerve that cause degenerative optic neuropathy, characterised by failure of neuroretinal rim tissue in the optic nerve head, retinal nerve fibre layer, and retinal ganglion cells. Glaucoma imposes a serious epidemiological threat, with an steady increase in the global number of cases. In the current ophthalmological practice, glaucoma is diagnosed via a series of examinations, including routine funduscopic examination, ocular tonometry, gonioscopy, measurement of the visual field, and assessment using the optical coherence tomography (OCT) t

We aimed to investigate the changes in cupping in chiasmal lesion optic neuropathy (chON) compared to baseline optic disc and glaucoma. We used a novel study design to enroll patients who had fundus photographs incidentally taken during routine health check-ups prior to the onset of optic neuropathy. In 31 eyes (21 patients) with chON and 33 eyes (30 patients) with glaucoma, we investigated the change in cup-to-disc (C/D) area from the baseline to overt cupping using flicker analysis. Compared to the baseline, 23 eyes (74.2%) had increased cup size and 3 (9.7%) had vascular configuration chang

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of myopia and age on temporal optic disc margin anatomy within the parapapillary atrophy (PPA) area by use of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: Fifty young myopic eyes with PPA (myopic PPA group), 50 aged non-myopic eyes with PPA (aged PPA group), and 50 young non-myopic eyes without PPA (control group) were enrolled. High-definition OCT scanning was used to obtain horizontal cross-sectional optic nerve head (ONH) images. By use of these OCT scans we investigated three temporal optic disc margin structures: the configuration of the bo

In addition to optic disc assessment at the slit lamp and the use of imaging devices for glaucoma diagnosis, optic disc photography is widely used in clinical practice. The advantages of stereophotography are a permanent recording of the optic disc status especially used for serial evaluation of discs, good visibility of the peripapillary region and a relatively fast examination without pupil dilation (if using non-mydriatic fundus cameras). The limitations are the need for clear media, pupil dilation, a skilled photographer and the delay involved.Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) photography i

On Earth, tissue weight generates compressive forces that press on body structures and act on the walls of vessels throughout the body. In microgravity, tissues no longer have weight, and tissue compressive forces are lost, suggesting that individuals who weigh more may show greater effects from microgravity exposure. One unique effect of long-duration microgravity exposure is spaceflight-associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS), which can present with globe flattening, choroidal folds, optic disk edema, and a hyperopic visual shift. To determine whether weight or other anthropometric measures a…

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), as defined by the modified Dandy criteria, is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is important to rule out other sight- and life-threatening causes of optic disk edema. IIH primarily affects obese women of childbearing age.
CONCLUSIONS: Permanent visual loss is the primary morbidity associated with IIH. Quantitative perimetry is key in management decision-making to prevent blindness. Treatment consists of weight loss, medication, and surgery.

In December 1980, a 26-year-old black man came to the Washington Hospital Center Eye Clinic with a unilateral decrease in visual acuity, vitreous inflammation, optic disk pallor, and a degenerated retinal pigment epithelium. A motile subretinal worm was subsequently found. Unlike an earlier series of 18 patients with diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis reported by other authors, this patient exhibited eosinophilia and a highly positive ELISA for Toxocara.

A 4-month-old infant boy presented with a mild manifestation of trisomy 13 syndrome. The severe ocular findings usually associated with this syndrome were not seen. Rather, the patient had bilateral congenital glaucoma with glaucomatous optic disk cupping and, in one eye, a posterior vortex vein. Such findings are unusual in the trisomy 13 syndrome. The posterior vortex vein is a particularly unusual finding previously occurring in myopic eyes.
