Surgical and orthodontic management of impacted teeth.

This article has accomplished four objectives. First of all, the most commonly impacted teeth have been identified. Aside from the third molars, these teeth include the maxillary canines, maxillary central incisors, mandibular second premolars, and mandibular second molars. Second, the cause of impaction has been discussed. In most situations, these unerupted teeth have been diverted or are angulated aberrantly during development. Once the root apex has closed, they lose their potential to erupt. Third, the various surgical procedures to uncover these impacted teeth have been described. Three

[Orthognathic and orthodontic consequences of mouth breathing].

There is a large controversy about the causal relations between dento-facial deformities and mouth-breathing habits. Some postural and morphological changes during long-term adaptation to oral respiration are evoked: opening of the bite with a lowered postural position of the mandible, reduction of upper arch width, downward and backward rotation of the mandible, increased lower facial height and changes in the inclination of the lower and upper incisors. It seems that the altered postural position of the tongue and of the mandible, needed for oral ventilation, could, by soft-tissue stretching

The subjective need and demand for orthodontic treatment.

The subjective need and demand for orthodontic treatment amongst 955 12-year-old Sheffield children has been assessed using the aesthetic component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and by a fixed choice questionnaire. When answering the questionnaire a greater proportion of females perceived themselves as having less attractive dentitions and greater treatment need despite any objective evidence to support this view. Of the children at the attractive end of the aesthetic component scale 84.5 per cent were prepared to accept orthodontic treatment of an unspecified nature.

Raising the root. A look at orthodontic extrusion.

A simple technique using bonded wires to establish anchorage and an attachment to a tooth requires a minimum of special materials or advanced skills in orthodontics. The bonded wire stabilizes the anchor unit and avoids any adverse tooth movement.

Orthodontic therapy in the patient treated with cyclosporine.

Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressive drug that is gaining widespread use in the treatment of a variety of disorders. Gingival hyperplasia, a common side effect of cyclosporine therapy, has significant implications for orthodontic treatment, especially as the drug becomes more widely used to treat diseases prevalent in adolescents. A 5-year study of a group of patients with type 1 diabetes who were receiving cyclosporine treatment revealed a series of findings that are of importance to the orthodontist, including the potential for orthodontic appliances to increase the severity of the induced g

Who seeks surgical-orthodontic treatment?

Clinical examination records of more than 1000 patients evaluated in the Dentofacial Clinic at the University of North Carolina were reviewed to determine whether patients with certain characteristics were more likely to seek and to receive surgical treatment. Facial asymmetry was found in 25% of the patients. Women were twice as likely as men to seek evaluation and were more likely to receive surgical treatment once evaluated. Individuals with a long face or skeletal Class III problem appeared more likely to seek evaluation than did those with mandibular deficiency and normal or short facial

Surgical and orthodontic management of compound odontoma.

Practitioners should always consider the possibility of an odontoma when the eruption of teeth is delayed. The authors report an example of compound odontoma associated with delayed eruption of incisor teeth, and describe the surgical and orthodontic management of the case.

[Apexification during active orthodontic treatment].

An apexification procedure is performed on a maxillary left central incisor tooth of a fourteen years old girl who has chronic apical periodontitis and undergoing active orthodontic treatment. After a one-year clinical and radiological follow-up, formation of apical closure is observed. As a result, apexification can be suggested as a successful treatment procedure in such cases.

Orthodontic treatment in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

The literature is briefly reviewed and the presentation and orthodontic treatment of a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is described. Surprisingly, in view of the nature of this collagen disorder, tooth movement appeared to progress normally; there was, however, a problem of mucosal ulceration which was alleviated through regular use of chlorhexidine mouthwash.

Incidence of canal calcification in the orthodontic patient.

References in the endodontic literature specifically warn that orthodontic treatment may initiate the formation of secondary dentin deposition within a tooth to the extent of obstructing the entire root canal. Comparison of forty-six orthodontically treated patients with a control group of age- and sex-matched patients who had not undergone orthodontic treatment revealed two orthodontically treated patients with a total of three teeth that showed evidence of canal calcification. Although this incidence is not statistically significant, the clinical significance of canal calcification in the or

[Orthodontic studies in children with stunted growth].

Biometrical studies on a group of 43 children with stunted growth showed that stunted growth is associated with smaller dimensions of the upper dental arch. The lower dental arch is not involved. The relationship between the variations in the characteristics under examination are explained with the aid of three basic factors of growth which had been established mathematically. The crown diameters of the permanent teeth are not smaller as in children with normal growth.
