OBJECT: Heterotopic ossification (HO) after cervical arthroplasty can limit the mobility of an artificial disc. In this study the authors used CT scanning to assess the formation of HO with the goal of investigating the correlation between the carpentry of arthroplasty, formation of HO, mobility, and clinical outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records, radiological studies, and clinical evaluations was conducted for consecutive patients who underwent 1- or 2-level cervical arthroplasty with the Bryan disc. The patients underwent follow-up for more than 24 months. The formati

Fibrodyplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare hereditary disease, which has a variable course characterized by occasional flare-ups of heterotopic ossification (HO) in soft tissues that are followed by swelling, stiffness, pain and warmth. Here, we report for the first time a case of a 45-year-old female patient with known FOP recovering from COVID-19 with disease progression potentially linked with the viral illness. In December 2020 the patient contracted a mild form of COVID-19 infection without need for hospital admission. Since January 2021, the patient felt unwell, with occasional

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the abnormal bone formation in soft tissue where bone normally does not exist. HO can occur secondary to musculoskeletal trauma, burns, spinal cord injury, or traumatic head injury. The treatment of HO ranges from simple medical treatment to advance surgical intervention; it is largely dependent on the amount of bone formation, the location, the limitation of motion, and the severity of the joint disease.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the case of a 26-year-old man who presented to an orthopedic clinic with pain in the lower back and both knees

OBJECTIVE: The authors aimed to identify factors that may be useful for quantifying the amount of degenerative change in preoperative patients to identify ideal candidates for cervical disc replacement (CDR) in patients with a minimum of 10 years of follow-up data.
METHODS: During the period from December 2003 to August 2008, 54 patients underwent CDR with a Bryan cervical disc prosthesis performed by the same group of surgeons, and all of the patients in this group with at least 10 years of follow-up data were enrolled in this retrospective analysis of cases. Postoperative bone formation was

OBJECT Heterotopic ossification (HO) after cervical arthroplasty is not uncommon and may cause immobility of the disc. To prevent HO formation, study protocols of clinical trials for cervical arthroplasty undertaken by the US FDA included perioperative use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, there are few data supporting the use of NSAIDs to prevent HO after cervical arthroplasty. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of NSAIDs in HO formation and clinical outcomes. METHODS Consecutive patients who underwent 1- or 2-level cervical arthroplasty with a minimu

INTRODUCTION: Cervical arthroplasty has been shown to have successful, short-term and long-term radiologic and clinical outcomes. The incidence of and predisposing factors for heterotopic ossification (HO) have not been determined. We retrospectively assessed the intermediate-term clinical and radiologic outcomes, especially the incidence of HO and its risk factors.
METHODS: Our patient population consisted of 75 patients (85 levels) with cervical disk herniation. Mean follow-up was 40 months, with a minimum follow-up of 24 months. The numeric rating scale scores of neck and arm pain, the nec

Transgenic mice which express the simian virus 40 large T-antigen (Tag) under the regulatory control of the hormone responsive rat C3(1) gene develop unusual lesions of heterotopic bone growth associated with mixed tumor formation arising from eccrine sweat glands found only in the foot pads of mice, ischiocavernosus muscle adjacent to bulbourethral glands and occasionally the salivary and mammary glands. These lesions are very similar to mixed tumors arising in several types of human cancers. Based upon electron microscopic examination and immunocytochemical analyses of cellular differentiati

PURPOSE: Experimental and clinical data support effectiveness of perioperative radiotherapy to prevent heterotopic ossification after hip surgery or trauma. Since 1987, two prospectively randomized trials were performed in patients with high-risk factors to develop heterotopic ossification: the first (HOP 1) to assess the prophylactic efficacy of postoperative low vs. medium dose radiotherapy, and the second (HOP 2) to assess the prophylactic efficacy of pre vs. postoperative radiotherapy.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: 410 patients with high risk to develop heterotopic ossifications about the hip fol

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of 3 weeks of indomethacin, a nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in comparison to 1 week of meloxicam as prophylaxis for heterotopic ossifications (HOs) after distal biceps tendon repair.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was performed on 78 patients undergoing distal biceps tendon repair between 2008 and 2019. From 2008 to 2016, patients received meloxicam 15 mg daily for the period of 1 week as usual care. From 2016 onward, the standard protocol was changed to indomethacin 25 mg 3 times daily for 3 weeks.

Complex injury and open reconstructive surgeries of the knee often lead to joint dysfunction that may alter the normal biomechanics of the joint. Two major complications that often arise are excessive deposition of fibrotic tissue and acquired heterotopic endochondral ossification. Knee arthrofibrosis is a fibrotic joint disorder where aberrant buildup of scar tissue and adhesions develop around the joint. Heterotopic ossification is ectopic bone formation around the periarticular tissues. Even though arthrofibrosis and heterotopic ossification pose an immense clinical problem, limited studies

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) involves the ectopic deposition of bone in soft tissues, frequently occurring as a complication post-hip trauma or surgery. To prevent HO following total hip arthroplasty (THA), irradiation has been extensively employed, alongside the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Given the extensive range of NSAIDs available, determining the most effective NSAID or irradiation protocol for prophylaxis continues to be a matter of debate.
METHODS: Adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Coch

RATIONALE: Endovascular treatment (EVT) is considered a preferred procedure of superficial femoral artery (SFA) pseudoaneurysm in recent years. However, heterotopic ossification (HO) after SFA pseudoaneurysm is a rare occurrence, that may cause late stent-graft fracture.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 58-year-old male who underwent EVT for SFA pseudoaneurysm 8 years ago presented with a progressive mass at the right thigh and claudication. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed fracture and occlusion of stent-graft, which was compressed by the deep femoral artery (DFA) pseudoaneurysm and a bone-li

We report a rare case of double-level adjacent segment disease (ASD), occurring ten years later an anterior cervical discectomy (ACD) without fusion, treated by cervical arthroplasty, highlighting the outcome at long-term follow-up and focusing on heterotopic ossification. In 1995 a 25-year-old man satisfactorily underwent ACD at C4/C5. At that time MRI also showed signs of degenerative disc disease (DDD) at C3/C4 and C5/C6. Ten years later, a new MRI scan showed a large C3/C4 and a smaller C5/C6 soft disc hernia together with spondylotic changes at the level above and below the site of the fi

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have documented the rate of heterotopic ossification (HO) formation in the residual limbs of combat-related amputees from the US Armed Forces injured in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. Final amputation level within the zone of injury and blast as the mechanism of injury were identified as possible risk factors for the occurrence and grade of HO. There has been no previous description of HO in combat-related amputees from the UK service personnel. The purpose of this study was to examine potential differences in the prevalence of HO between UK and US Allied For

Sixty-two hips in fifty-five patients who were considered to be at risk for postoperative heterotopic ossification were randomly divided into two groups: one received a single 800-centigray dose of limited-field radiation and the other, 1000 centigray of limited-field radiation in divided doses. The risk for heterotopic-bone formation was identified on the basis of previously described criteria, which included previous heterotopic ossification after an operation about the hip, hypertrophic osteoarthritis or post-traumatic osteoarthrosis characterized by formation of extensive osteophytes, radi

Heterotopic ossification (HO) following the use of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in the setting of transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) or posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) is a troublesome and well-described postoperative complication. There is currently no consensus regarding the treatment of this offending pathology. In this report, we present a retrospective single-surgeon review of 14 patients who underwent image-guided decompression of HO. We describe a new technique where navigation demonstrates a safe and thorough decompression compared to tha

Heterotopic ossifications (HOs) are the pathologic process by which bone inappropriately forms outside of the skeletal system. Despite HOs being a persistent clinical problem in the general population, there are no definitive strategies for their prevention and treatment due to a limited understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to lesion development. One disease in which the development of heterotopic subcutaneous ossifications (SCOs) leads to morbidity is Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO). Albright hereditary osteodystrophy is caused by heterozygous inactivat

BACKGROUND: Severe heterotopic ossification (HO) (grades III and IV) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) over the last 25 years requiring excision is very uncommon. We performed a systematic review of the literature and reported a new case series with operative treatment after primary uncemented THA.
METHODS: A systematic review identified papers describing patients who had excision of HO after THA performed after 1988. Concepts of hip arthroplasty, HO, and surgical excision were searched in MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus from database inception to November 2022. The inclusion criteria were artic
