Mesenteric Panniculitis-First Case Series After Bariatric Surgery.

Mesenteric panniculitis is an uncommon pathology, of poorly understood etiology, characterized by progressive inflammation and fibrosis of the small bowel mesentery. This disease has been reported usually after other abdominal surgeries. We present two cases of young male patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and developed abdominal symptoms within 45-60 days of surgery. Both were investigated for known post-bariatric complications. While first patient presented (5 months later) at an irreversible stage and died within 8-9 months of primary surgery, in second patient, the dise…

Glatiramer acetate-induced lobular panniculitis and skin necrosis.

Glatiramer acetate (GA) is a drug that commonly is used for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Although it typically is known as a safe and effective therapy, a number of adverse effects associated with GA have been reported in the literature. Local injection-site reactions (LISRs) and mild systemic symptoms are among the most commonly described adverse effects. A review of the literature revealed limited reports of panniculitis as an adverse effect of GA injection and even fewer describing associated skin necrosis. We report a case of GA-induced panniculitis and s…

Lupus erythematosus panniculitis: clinicopathological, immunophenotypic, and molecular studies.

Lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP) is an inflammatory disorder of the subcutaneous fat in patients with lupus erythematosus (LE). It is a rare variant of the disease, which occurs approximately in 1%-3% of patients with cutaneous LE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical, histopathologic, immunophenotypical, and molecular profiles of LEP. We performed a retrospective study of 19 biopsy specimens from 17 patients with LEP. We reviewed their clinical data and reexamined the histopathology. Immunophenotyping and molecular studies were done using sections from paraffin-embe…

Mesenteric panniculitis in oncologic patients: PET-CT findings.

The aim of this study is to assess the role of PET/CT in differentiating between mesenteric panniculitis (MP) and co-existing MP and mesenteric tumoural involvement. A total of 33 PET/CT examinations, of 19 oncologic patients (16 men and three women with ages ranging from 48 years to 83 years) with findings of MP on the CT part of the study were retrospectively reviewed. The FDG uptake in mesenteric nodules was recorded. The final diagnosis of malignant mesenteric involvement was based on clinical and imaging follow-up. Based on the FDG uptake in mesenteric nodules, patients were categorized a…

Recurrent eosinophilic panniculitis associated with Fasciola hepatica infection.

Eosinophilic panniculitis is characterized by a prominent infiltration of subcutaneous fat with eosinophils. We report a case of Fasciola hepatica infection presenting with eosinophilic panniculitis successfully treated with bithionol. To our knowledge, this is the first report of recurrent eosinophilic panniculitis associated with Fasciola hepatica infection.

Acute Crohn's colitis with lobular panniculitis--metastatic Crohn's?

One of the common lesions in Crohn's colitis is erythema nodosum, a septal panniculitis that may appear before diagnosis or in conjunction with flare up. We report a case of Crohn's colitis where the presenting sign was neutrophilic lobular panniculitis with few granulomas. The possibility that this case represents a forme fruste of metastatic Crohn's is suggested. As skin biopsies are not usually performed by gastroenterologists in erythema nodosum-like skin lesions in Crohn's patients it may well be that the incidence of lobular panniculitis is higher than reported in the literature.

[Kaposi-Irgang lupus erythematosus profundus. Lupus erythematosus panniculitis].

Lupus panniculitis is a rare variant of cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Two typical cases demonstrate the association of lupus panniculitis with signs of discoid lupus erythematosus and systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinically it is characterised by subcutaneous nodules or plaques, which may ulcerate leaving depressed atrophic scars. Histologically the lesions show lobular panniculitis. A positive immunofluorescent band test with deposition of IgG, IgM and C3 at the dermal-epidermal junction and blood vessel walls helps to confirm the diagnosis. The knowledge of the clinical features and histop…
