BACKGROUND: Pakistan is one of the endemic regions for typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever. This study aimed to identify the evolving antimicrobial sensitivity patterns of Salmonella species causing enteric fever and its implications on the clinical prescribing of antimicrobials.

During 1980-1984, 51 patients with enteric fever (typhoid/paratyphoid fever and salmonellosis) biliary tract sepsis, and other Gram-negative infections were treated with temocillin at 3 medical centres in Bangkok, Thailand. The cryptic plasmid pGY1, which is harbored by a clinical isolate of Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A, was identified in a 9-year-old girl with paratyphoid fever in 2005, and its DNA sequence was determined. It is 3592 bp in length and had a G+C content of 43.3%. Four cases of West's syndrome (generalized myoclonic spasms, arrest of psychomotor development and hypsarrhythmia) which were found to be resistant to the classical treatment (ACTH, prednisone, nitrazepam, clonazepam, etc.) are reported. A review of the epidemiological features of the more important enteric infections in Singapore was given. Using haemoculture as the gold standard, a double antibody sandwich ELISA for the detection of Salmonella typhi Barber protein antigen (BP) was compared with the Widal test.
