Associations Between Emotion Dysregulation Dimensions and Parenting Behaviors in Trauma-Exposed African American Mothers.

Parenting behavior is key to understanding transmission of intergenerational trauma-related risk. Emotion dysregulation (ED) and psychological symptoms are associated with negative parenting behaviors, although their unique roles remain unclear. The current study examined associations of ED dimensions, depression, PTSD, and substance use with parenting behaviors in African American mothers. Participants included 98 mother-child dyads recruited from an urban hospital setting. Trauma exposure, ED, depression, substance use, and parenting behaviors (overreactivity, laxness, demandingness, warmth,…

Early intervention in child and adolescent eating disorders: The role of a parenting group.

OBJECTIVE: Parental involvement is emphasised in treatment guidelines for Eating Disorders (ED). The primary aim of this phase II study was to estimate the impact of a parent group intervention delivered immediately post-diagnosis on weight gain and ED psychopathology in a cohort of young people referred to a community ED service. A secondary aim was to identify predictor variables for early treatment response in children whose parents attended the programme. METHOD: Parents of 64 new cases of Anorexia Nervosa (AN; n = 50) and Atypical Anorexia (AAN, n = 14) attended a 6 week parent group int

Predictors of parenting self-agency among mothers receiving substance abuse or mental health treatment.

Mothers' mental health or substance use disorders impact the behaviours of their children both short-term and long-term. There is increased concern for mothers with mental health or substance use disorders to effectively handle parenting challenges. Children of these mothers are at risk for emotional and behavioural adjustment problems as well as poor academic performances. Parenting self-agency refers to parents' perceptions of their confidence and ability to overcome barriers and manage issues in parenting. Examining the factors that predict parenting self-agency aids in understanding how nu…

Predictors of parenting attitudes in an at-risk sample: Results from the LONGSCAN study.

BACKGROUND: Associations between parenting attitudes and behavior and children's adjustment are well-established, including links between negative parenting beliefs and increased risk for child maltreatment and poorer child functioning. Considerably less is known regarding what factors may correspond with parenting attitudes, particularly among at-risk samples. In line with theoretical models of the determinants of parenting, the aim of the study was to investigate correlates of parenting attitudes among child, caregiver, family, and neighborhood factors. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS/METHODS: Th…

Disciplinary Parenting Practice and Child Mental Health: Evidence From the UK Millennium Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a longitudinal association exists between differential disciplinary parenting practices at 3 years of age and later child psychopathology at 11 years. METHOD: Data were obtained from the Millennium Cohort Study, a UK-wide cohort. Discipline style was assessed using a validated maternal reported questionnaire at 3 years of age for which later outcome data were available. "Active" (including smacking, shouting, and telling off) and "withdrawal" (including ignoring, removal of privileges, and sending to bedroom) approaches were distinguished. Child emotional and…

Common components of evidence-based parenting programs for preventing maltreatment of school-age children.

Child maltreatment can lead to a variety of negative outcomes in childhood including physical and mental health problems that can extend into adulthood. Given the transactional nature of child maltreatment and the difficulties that many maltreating families experience, child protection services typically offer various kinds of programs to maltreated children, their parents, and/or their families. Although the specific difficulties experienced by these families may vary, sub-optimal parenting practices are typically part of the picture and may play a central role in maltreated children's develo…

Parental socialization profiles in Mexican-origin families: Considering cultural socialization and general parenting practices.

OBJECTIVES: Recognizing that immigrant parents socialize their children in specific ways, the current study examines Mexican-origin families' parental socialization profiles using both parental cultural socialization and general parenting dimensions. We seek to understand how these dimensions interact to form culturally grounded parental socialization profiles in a sample of Mexican-origin parents and adolescents. METHOD: There were 604 adolescents, 595 mothers, and 293 fathers within Mexican-origin families self-reporting on 2 cultural socialization dimensions (respeto, independence) and 4 g…

The intergenerational transmission of at-risk/problem gambling: The moderating role of parenting practices.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although parenting practices are articulated as underlying mechanisms or protective factors in several theoretical models, their role in the intergenerational transmission of gambling problems has received limited research attention. This study therefore examined the degree to which parenting practices (positive parenting, parental involvement, and inconsistent discipline) moderated the intergenerational transmission of paternal and maternal problem gambling. METHODS: Students aged 12-18 years (N = 612) recruited from 17 Australian secondary schools completed a surv…

Risk and Adversity, Parenting Quality, and Children's Social-Emotional Adjustment in Families Experiencing Homelessness.

A multimethod, multi-informant design was used to examine links among sociodemographic risk, family adversity, parenting quality, and child adjustment in families experiencing homelessness. Participants were 245 homeless parents (Mage  = 31.0, 63.6% African American) and their 4- to 6-year-old children (48.6% male). Path analyses revealed unique associations by risk domain: Higher sociodemographic risk predicted more externalizing behavior and poorer teacher-child relationships, whereas higher family adversity predicted more internalizing behavior. Parenting quality was positively associated w…

Parenting a Child with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Orofacial Pain, and Dysfunction: A Qualitative Study.

AIMS: To deepen knowledge of how parents of children diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) perceive the orofacial manifestations of the disease, its treatments, and their encounters with dental care providers. METHODS: A total of 15 interviews with parents of JIA patients (3 to 16 years old) with orofacial pain were analyzed according to classic grounded theory. RESULTS: The main problem was identified as controlling an unpredictable life situation that includes a child with JIA. To solve this main problem, the parent was trying to comprehend, help, and speak for the child with

Longitudinal associations of childhood parenting and adolescent health: the mediating influence of social competence.

The current study examined a process through which parenting during the primary school transition contributes to cardiovascular health in adolescence, a foundational period for adult health trajectories. Using path analyses, social competence was tested as a mediator between parental sensitivity and adolescent health among 884 families. Results indicated that mothers' and fathers' sensitivity was associated with increasing social competence from first grade (age 7) to sixth grade (age 12), which was associated with higher awakening cortisol in ninth grade (age 15) and decreasing blood pressure…

Development pathways from abusive parenting to delinquency: the mediating role of depression and aggression.

This study investigated the long-term relationship between abusive parenting and adolescent mental health, and the path to delinquent behavior. Longitudinal data from 5th through 7th graders from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) were analyzed to examine if abusive parenting was a predictor of early adolescent delinquency behavior, via aggression and depression as mediating factors. The results were as follows. First, parental abuse (both emotional and physical) was found to have significant effects on children's psychosocial factors (aggression and depression), while parental…

Examining the relationship between marijuana use, medical marijuana dispensaries, and abusive and neglectful parenting.

The current study extends previous research by examining whether and how current marijuana use and the physical availability of marijuana are related to child physical abuse, supervisory neglect, or physical neglect by parents while controlling for child, caregiver, and family characteristics in a general population survey in California. Individual level data on marijuana use and abusive and neglectful parenting were collected during a telephone survey of 3,023 respondents living in 50 mid-size cities in California. Medical marijuana dispensaries and delivery services data were obtained via si…

Hope for children and families: targeting abusive parenting and the associated impairment of children.

The purpose of this study is to distill the "effective practice elements" from randomised controlled interventions (RCTs) to prevent the recurrence of abusive and neglectful parenting and the associated health and developmental impairment of children. The resulting elements would be used then to develop a step-by-step modular-systemic approach to intervention that is suitable to the needs of a variety of frontline practitioners in social care, health, and education. A series of 22 randomised RCTs were analysed using the distillation and matching approach to establish the presence of effective …

Parenting stress in families with very low birth weight preterm infants in early infancy.

Taking care of a premature infant adds an extra burden to already stressed parents. Previous studies have shown that parental stress occurs during the initial hospitalization. However, there is little information on parental stress over time, and the few existing results are conflicting. In addition, many studies have focused on maternal stress but there is little information about a father's long-term adaptation to stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree and type of parenting stress in the families of very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants over the first two years of…

Role of maternal childhood trauma on parenting among depressed mothers of psychiatrically ill children.

BACKGROUND: Independently, maternal depression and maternal history of childhood abuse confer risk for impaired parenting. These associations may be compounded when depressed mothers with histories of childhood abuse are faced with the challenge of parenting offspring who themselves struggle with mental health problems. This study examined the relationships among maternal history of childhood abuse, maternal depression, and parenting style in the context of parenting a psychiatrically ill child, with an emphasis on examining maternal emotional abuse and neglect. We hypothesized that maternal c…

Parenting style and dietary behaviour of young children. Findings from the Healthy Beginnings Trial.

Parenting style may have a role in the development of young children's dietary behaviour, and a better understanding of parenting style may lead to better-targeted childhood obesity prevention interventions. This study aimed to investigate the association of parental self-efficacy, parenting style and dietary behaviour of young children. A cross-sectional study with 242 first-time mothers and their children was conducted using the data from the Healthy Beginnings Trial undertaken in one of the most socially and economically disadvantaged areas of south-western Sydney, in 2007-2010. Parental se…

Perceived child behavior problems, parenting stress, and maternal depressive symptoms among prenatal methamphetamine users.

The present study was designed to examine parenting stress, maternal depressive symptoms, and perceived child behavior problems among mothers who used methamphetamine (MA) during pregnancy. Participants were a subsample (n = 212; 75 exposed, 137 comparison) of biological mothers who had continuous custody of their child from birth to 36 months. The subsample was drawn from a larger, ongoing longitudinal study on the effects of prenatal methamphetamine exposure (n = 412; 204 exposed, 208 comparison) (Arria et al in Matern Child Health J 10:293-302 2006). Mothers who used MA during pregnancy rep…
