Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of parotid in infancy--a new entity.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is commonly found in lungs, mesentery or omentum in the younger population. We hereby report a hitherto unreported case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, arising from the parotid gland in an infant. Diagnosis by histopathology and its treatment by superficial parotidectomy is being presented.

Parapharyngeal parotid pleomorphic adenoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors are uncommon, accounting for 0.5%-1% of head and neck neoplasms. Diagnosis and treatment of parotid pleomorphic adenomas (PPA) extending to the PPS are difficult because the PPA is situated deep in the tissue. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman presented with a sore throat, odynophagia, and foreign body sensation in the throat for 6 weeks. Physical examination revealed a bulge in the oropharynx. Imaging revealed a clearly demarcated lesion in the right PPS of the neck. PPA diagnosis was confirmed using fine-needle aspiration c

Danish translation and validation of the Parotidectomy Outcome Inventory 8.

INTRODUCTION: Complications and recurrence within benign salivary gland surgery are not systematically registered in Denmark. Patient-reported outcome measures are increasingly included in clinical and health policy decision-making, and therefore it is crucial that this type of data is valid. A patient-reported questionnaire regarding outcome after benign parotid gland surgery has been developed and implemented in a national German database. We aimed to translate the Parotidectomy Outcome Inventory 8 (POI-8) into Danish and validate it. METHODS: The questionnaire was translated. The study pop

Fine needle aspiration as a diagnostic modality for Warthin tumors identified as fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography-positive.

Limited evidence exists regarding the 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18]-fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) avidity of Warthin tumors, the second most common benign parotid gland tumor. This study aims to clarify this aspect by analyzing patients who underwent FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and quantifying tumor standardized uptake values (SUV). Medical records of 29 patients with fine needle aspiration (FNA)-confirmed Warthin tumors who underwent FDG-PET/CT near the diagnosis of Warthin tumor were reviewed. Key parameters included cancer history, cytologic diagnosis of Warthin tumor,

Pleomorphic adenoma with extensive oncocytic change in the parotid gland: a case report and review.

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of the salivary glands, but rarely shows extensive oncocytic metaplasia. Extensive oncocytic metaplasia within PA is rarely encountered and may closely mimic malignant neoplasms, creating significant diagnostic challenges for clinicians and pathologists. This uncommon histologic variant can potentially influence clinical decision-making processes and subsequent patient management strategies. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old male presented with a painless, slowly enlarging mass in the left parotid gland, which had persisted fo

Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors in a Tertiary University Hospital in Northern Spain.

(1) Background: Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) are a rare and diverse group of neoplasms arising in the parotid, submandibular, sublingual, and minor salivary glands distributed throughout the upper aerodigestive tract. Given the rarity and complexity of MSGTs, understanding their epidemiology across diverse populations is crucial for improving diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. (2) Methods: A retrospective analysis involving 45 patients diagnosed with malignant salivary gland tumors and treated with curative intention between 1 July 2016 and 1 July 2021 in a tertiary academic hospital was p

[Noncontrast computed tomography in the diagnosis of tumors of the major salivary glands].

Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) of the major salivary glands was made in 127 patients, which revealed 95 space-occupying lesions (88 intraglandular and 7 extraglandular ones). Pleomorphic tumors of the parotid glands are solitary, round, high-density (29.6 +/- 4.2 HU) masses with well-defined, smooth margins. Salivary cysts were characterized by the presence of a dense capsule; the density of cyst contents was 8.0 +/- 2.0 HU. Salivary lipomas had a characteristic tomographic pattern due to the presence of adipose tissue; the lipoma density was -108.3 +/- 7.8 HU. Malignant parotid tumors

Diagnosis and management of parotid carcinoma with a special focus on recent advances in molecular biology.

Recent progress in diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and outcome of parotid cancer is reviewed. Modern imaging allows evaluation of the anatomical extent of the cancer and its relationship to the facial nerve, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Histological Classification facilitates accurate, consistent diagnosis. Surgery remains the treatment of choice with preservation of a functioning facial nerve. Resection of the facial nerve should only be undertaken when there is clinical evidence of nerve dysfunction. The NO neck should be treated in advanced-stage and high-grade cancers, but the

Oncocytoma of minor salivary gland involving the retromolar region: A rare entity.

Oncocytic neoplasms comprise a group of rare tumors of salivary glands. Histologically, World Health Organization (WHO) (1991) classified them into three distinct types: Oncocytosis, oncocytoma and oncocytic carcinoma. Oncocytoma is also known by the more descriptive and less confusing terms of oxyphilic adenoma and oxyphilic granular cell adenoma. Oncocytoma is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm composed of large epithelial cells with characteristic bright eosinophilic granular cytoplasm (oncocytic cells). It accounts for approximately 0.4-1% of all salivary gland neoplasms, occurring prim

[Lymphoma of the parotid salivary gland].

INTRODUCTION: Lymphomas appear mostly in lymph nodes and parenchymal organs such as liver and spleen, while other localizations are less frequent. They are classified as Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin types, and these two are divided into subtypes, according to cell morphology and the characteristics of concurrent elements. Parotid salivary gland lymphomas are rare primary tumours of this region, although 80% of all salivary gland lymphomas, appear in parotid. They originate from intraparotid or periparotid lymph nodes, or from lymphoid elements of other pathological states in the gland such as siala
