Authors describe ocular and neurological findings in a 68 years old female patient with the intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri). For developing edema of the optic nerve head on the fundus (oedema papillae), accompanied with lowered visual acuity and visual field defects, an urgent surgical treatment was indicated--the lumboperitoneal shunt was introduced. After the operation, although the atrophy of the optic nerve head atrophy occurred, the visual acuity was maintained and visual fields sensitivity improved.

Recent improvements in cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) technology have allowed rapid improvement in quality visual acuity. Cataract surgeons can also reliably reduce a patient's dependency on spectacles. Through careful monitoring of implant power calculations to improve their accuracy and reduce unwanted astigmatism, our patients are now able to enjoy clear, uncorrected vision. Newer technology, such as multifocal IOLs and accommodating IOLs, can provide a return to prepresbyopic visual acuity for the cataract patient.

BACKGROUND: Cataract surgery with pseudophakic mini-monovision has lower out-of-pocket patient expense than premium multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL). The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient-reported satisfaction and spectacle dependence for key activities of daily living after cataract surgery with pseudophakic mini-monovision. The study also examined statistical relationships between patient demographic variables, visual acuity and satisfaction.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 56 patients (112 eyes) who underwent bilateral cataract surgery with pseudophakic mini-monovision.

RATIONALE: The conception that multiple sclerosis may be challenging to distinguish from demyelinating manifestations of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) was introduced more than 30 years ago. However, it is now recognized that the neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) may occur more frequently in SS as opposed to multiple sclerosis. Characteristic NMOSD features can include severe attacks of optic neuritis, myelitis which is frequently longitudinally-extensive (spanning at least three vertebral segments on magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]), and an association with anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies.

PURPOSE: To develop a function to describe quality-adjusted life year (QALY) losses associated with visual field losses for use in cost-effectiveness models.
METHODS: We estimated the patient visual field defect in decibels (dBs) that corresponded to visual acuity values of 20/40, 20/70, 20/200 (US blindness), 20/400 (WHO blindness), and 20/1,000 (extreme impairment) using two methods. The first method categorized visual field defects by applying the logic of the Snellen minimum angle of resolution (MAR) acuity scale to the ability to perceive luminance adjusting for the differences in the vi

A 39-year-old man presented with sudden loss of visual acuity caused by two retinal hemorrhages with no choroidal neovascularization (confirmed by fluorescein angiography). The patient was hospitalized for malaise, progressive pancytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, progressive anemia, and perianal inflammation. Positive serologies were obtained for toxoplasmosis (IgG) and Leishmania (1/160). A diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis was made, and the patient was treated with pentavalent antimonials. Two months later, best-corrected visual acuity was 20/25, with no residual scotoma. Indirect ophthalmosc

We report a case of bacterial keratitis that occurred after laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy. The patient presented with a decrease in visual acuity and pain 2 days after the procedure. Culture was positive for Staphylococcus haemolyticus. The infiltrate slowly resolved with topical antibiotics, and the best corrected visual acuity improved to 20/20. Although bacterial keratitis occurs rarely after refractive surgery, patients should be informed of the potential risk for visual loss caused by this infection.

A patient taking ibuprofen (Motrin) for the relief of osteoarthritis developed, after two months, decreased visual acuity and decreased color vision. Initially the Visual Evoked Potentials, showed decreased wave amplitudes, and increased conduction times in both eyes. After stopping the drug, the Visual Evoked Potentials returned to normal one month before the visual acuity improved. We feel that Visual Evoked Potentials are useful for screening patients on ibuprofen, and prognosticating their recovery, when a secondary toxic optic neuritis develops.

The results of visual acuity in 1523 cataract-extractions were evaluated; comparing the visual acuity of the 7th to the 9th postoperative days, when the patients left the hospital. 73,1% of the patients had a supplemental disease of the eye or another general disease. 76,6% of the patients had a postoperative visual acuity between 5/4 and 5/15, clearly depending on the age of the patients. General diseases influence scarcely surgery, but the older the patients the more we find a reduced visual acuity that is reduced by generative senile macula disease. On an average they stayed in hospital for
