An examination of the effects of broadband air-conduction masker on the speech intelligibility of speech-modulated bone-conduction ultrasound.

Ultrasound can be heard by bone-conduction, and speech-modulated bone-conducted ultrasound (BCU) delivers the speech information to the human ear. One of the recognition mechanisms is the demodulation of the signals. Because some of the profoundly deaf can also hear speech-modulated BCU, another mechanism may also contribution to the recognition of speech-modulated BCU. In this study, eight volunteers with normal hearing participated. The intelligibilities of speech-modulated BCU were measured using a numeral word list under masking conditions. Because the masker can mask the demodulated sound

Mental blocks: fMRI reveals top-down modulation of early visual cortex when obstacles interfere with grasp planning.

When grasping an object, the fingers, hand and arm rarely collide with other non-target objects in the workspace. Kinematic studies of neurological patients (Schindler et al., 2004) and healthy participants (Chapman and Goodale, 2010a) suggest that the location of potential obstacles and the degree of interference they pose are encoded by the dorsal visual stream during action planning. Here, we used a slow event-related paradigm in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the neural encoding of obstacles in normal participants. Fifteen right-handed participants grasped a square

Binaural masking level difference in skilled reading children and children with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Combining stimuli arriving at both ears makes it possible to locate sounds in the environment and to better detect signals or understand speech in noise when the sound sources are separated spatially. The sensitivity of the binaural system to interaural differences in time and amplitude can be investigated by means of the binaural masking level difference (BMLD). The age at which the BMLD reaches adult levels appears to depend partly upon masker bandwidth. Less is known about the effect of masker's level on the development of BMLD in children. In the present study we assessed the e

Neural responses in the occipital cortex to unrecognizable faces.

OBJECTIVE: Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to examine neural responses to face stimuli in a masking paradigm. METHODS: Images of faces (neutral or fearful) and objects were presented in subthreshold, threshold, and suprathreshold conditions (exposure durations of approximately 20, 30 and 300 ms, respectively), followed by a 1000-ms pattern mask. We recorded ERP responses at Oz, T5, T6, Cz and Pz. The effects of physical stimulus features were examined by inverted stimuli. RESULTS: The occipital N1 amplitude (approximately 160 ms) was significantly smaller in response to faces t

The initial representation of individual faces in the right occipito-temporal cortex is holistic: electrophysiological evidence from the composite face illusion.

Identifying a facial feature (e.g. the eyes) is influenced by the position and identity of other features (e.g. the mouth) of the face, supporting the view that an individual face is represented as a whole in the human brain. To clarify how early in the time-course of face processing this holistic individual representation is accessed we recorded event-related potentials during an adaptation paradigm of the composite face illusion (CFI). Observers performed a matching task on top halves of two faces presented sequentially. For each face pair, top and bottom face halves could be both identical,

Preserved orbitofrontal function in first-episode schizophrenia: further evidence from the object alternation paradigm.

Neuropsychological literature indicates that performance on Object Alternation Task (OAT) can be linked to the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Patients with chronic schizophrenia perform poorly on behavioral and neuropsychological tasks related to OFC functions. In a previous study using the Iowa Gambling Task, we found unimpaired performance in a sample of individuals with first-episode schizophrenia (FES) spectrum disorders. In this study, we aimed to extend our study of OFC functions by using the OAT paradigm, to determine whether there are abnormalities in the early phases of schizophrenia. We

Taste mask, design and evaluation of an oral formulation using ion exchange resin as drug carrier.

The purpose of this research was to mask the bitter taste of Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (DPH) using cation exchange resins. Indion 234 and Tulsion 343 that contained crosslinked polyacrylic backbone were used. The drug resin complexes (DRC) were prepared by batch process by taking drug: resin ratios 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3. The optimum drug: resin ratio and the time required for maximum complexation was determined. The drug resinates were evaluated for the drug content, taste, micromeritic properties drug release and X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Effervescent and dispersible tablets were developed fr

A computer model of medial efferent suppression in the mammalian auditory system.

Stimulation of the olivocochlear bundle reduces basilar membrane displacement, driven auditory nerve activity, and compound action potential (CAP) response to acoustic stimulation. These effects were simulated using a computer model of the auditory periphery. The model simulates the medial efferent activity by attenuating the basilar membrane response. The model was evaluated against three animal studies reporting measurements at three levels of the auditory system; basilar membrane, single auditory nerve fibers and whole auditory nerve CAP. The CAP data included conditions where tones were ma

Modification of the Threshold Equalising Noise (TEN) test for cochlear dead regions for use with steeply sloping high-frequency hearing loss.

Steeply sloping high-frequency hearing loss is often associated with cochlear dead regions. These can be identified by measuring pure-tone thresholds in quiet and in Threshold-Equalising Noise (TEN). However, many patients cannot be adequately tested because the low frequencies in the TEN lead to uncomfortable loudness. We investigated the effect of high-pass filtering on the TEN-test results and the loudness of the TEN. Twenty-four normally hearing subjects and 35 subjects with steeply sloping high-frequency hearing loss were tested, using the standard TEN (TENs), and TEN high-pass filtered a

Motion-perception deficits and reading impairment: it's the noise, not the motion.

We tested the hypothesis that deficits on sensory-processing tasks frequently associated with poor reading and dyslexia are the result of impairments in external-noise exclusion, rather than motion perception or magnocellular processing. We compared the motion-direction discrimination thresholds of adults and children with good or poor reading performance, using coherent-motion displays embedded in external noise. Both adults and children who were poor readers had higher thresholds than their respective peers in the presence of high external noise, but not in the presence of low external noise

Is poor frequency modulation detection linked to literacy problems? A comparison of specific reading disability and mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss.

Specific reading disability (SRD) is now widely recognised as often being caused by phonological processing problems, affecting analysis of spoken as well as written language. According to one theoretical account, these phonological problems are due to low-level problems in auditory perception of dynamic acoustic cues. Evidence for this has come from studies showing poor discrimination of frequency-modulated from unmodulated tones. We measured frequency modulation detection limens (FMDLs) in 16 children with specific reading disability (SRD group), 16 children with mild to moderate hearing los

Functional reorganization in chinchilla inferior colliculus associated with chronic and acute cochlear damage.

This paper describes some of the unexpected functional changes that occur in the inferior colliculus (IC) following noise- and drug-induced cochlear pathology. A striking example of this is the compensation that is seen in IC responsiveness after drug-induced selective inner hair cell (IHC) loss. Despite a massive reduction in the compound action potential (CAP) caused by partial IHC loss, the evoked potential amplitude from the IC shows little or no reduction. Acoustic trauma, which impairs cochlear sensitivity and tuning, also reduces the CAP amplitude. Despite this reduced neural input, IC

A controlled study of temporal lobe structure volumes and P300 responses in schizophrenic patients with persistent auditory hallucinations.

Recent studies of cerebral pathology in patients with schizophrenia have focused on symptomatological and electrophysiological correlates of reduced temporal lobe structure volumes. Volume deficits of the left superior temporal gyrus have been correlated with auditory hallucinations as well as to left-sided P300 amplitude reduction. However, caution is needed to interpret correlational data as evidence of a specific relationship. Therefore, a controlled study was undertaken on schizophrenic patients with and without auditory hallucinations. MRI-defined volumes of the left superior temporal gyr

Smooth pursuit eye movements to extraretinal motion signals: deficits in relatives of patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Although mounting evidence supports the idea that smooth pursuit abnormality marks the genetic liability to schizophrenia, the precise ocular motor mechanism underlying the abnormality remains unknown. Based on recent findings in schizophrenia, we hypothesize that subtle deficits in the ability to hold online and/or use extraretinal motion information underlie the pursuit abnormality in vulnerable individuals. METHODS: The hypothesis was tested in 69 first-degree, biological relatives of probands with schizophrenia; 26 relatives had schizophrenia spectrum personalities (SSP). Subj

Spectrotemporal window of binaural integration in auditory object formation.

Binaural integration of interaural temporal information is essential for sound source localization and segregation. Current models of binaural interaction have shown that accurate sound localization in the horizontal plane depends on the resolution of phase ambiguous information by across-frequency integration. However, as such models are mostly static, it is not clear how proximate in time binaural events in different frequency channels should occur to form an auditory object with a unique lateral position. The present study examined the spectrotemporal window required for effective integrati

Auditory and Cognitive Factors Associated with Speech-in-Noise Complaints following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Auditory complaints following mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) are common, but few studies have addressed the role of auditory temporal processing in speech recognition complaints. PURPOSE: In this study, deficits understanding speech in a background of speech noise following MTBI were evaluated with the goal of comparing the relative contributions of auditory and nonauditory factors. RESEARCH DESIGN: A matched-groups design was used in which a group of listeners with a history of MTBI were compared to a group matched in age and pure-tone thresholds, as well as a control group

Effect of efferent activation on binaural frequency selectivity.

Binaural notched-noise experiments indicate a reduced frequency selectivity of the binaural system compared to monaural processing. The present study investigates how auditory efferent activation (via the medial olivocochlear system) affects binaural frequency selectivity in normal-hearing listeners. Thresholds were measured for a 1-kHz signal embedded in a diotic notched-noise masker for various notch widths. The signal was either presented in phase (diotic) or in antiphase (dichotic), gated with the noise. Stimulus duration was 25 ms, in order to avoid efferent activation due to the masker o

Hearing loss in children with otitis media with effusion: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the presence of non-purulent inflammation in the middle ear. Hearing impairment is frequently associated with OME. Pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry are two of the most primarily utilised auditory assessments and provide valuable behavioural and functional estimation on hearing loss. This paper was designed to review and analyse the effects of the presence of OME on children's listening abilities. DESIGN: A systematic and descriptive review. STUDY SAMPLE: Twelve articles reporting frequency-specific pure tone thresholds and/or speech p
