Clinical predictors of post-injury anxiety in adolescent patients following concussion.

The purpose of the current study was to examine predictors (e.g., pre-injury anxiety and sub-types, concussion symptom severity, neurocognitive performance, and vestibular/ocular-motor impairment) of post-injury anxiety scores following concussion among youth aged 10-18 years. This observational cohort study enrolled patients (n = 129) within 30 days of a diagnosed concussion. Patients completed Screening for Child Anxiety Related Disorders-Child Reports (SCARED-C), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Post-concussion Symptom Scale, neurocognitive testing, and Vestibular-Ocular Motor Screen

The Effectiveness of Interoceptive-Based Interventions to Reduce Adult Anxiety Sensitivity: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Anxiety sensitivity is defined as the fear of anxiety-related sensations and is linked to the top three preventable causes of disease and death in the US. Interoception is related to anxiety sensitivity and can be addressed by occupational therapists. Interoception encompasses sensing/feeling/noticing, understanding/interpreting, and acting upon one's internal bodily sensations. Interoceptive-based interventions are starting to be used to decrease adult anxiety sensitivity. This review examines the effectiveness of interoceptive-based interventions on adult anxiety sensitivity that ca

Comparison of Social-Evaluative Anxiety and Theory of Mind Functions in Social Anxiety Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Healthy Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the similarities in poor social competence and clinical manifestations of poor social behavior, no study has compared the theory of mind performance between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and schizophrenia, considering the effect of social-evaluative anxiety and neurocognitive functions. In our study, we aimed to compare the theory of mind functions and social-evaluative anxiety between patients with SAD and schizophrenia and healthy controls and to examine the relationship between the theory of mind, neurocognitive skills, and social-evaluative anxiety. METHODS: Thirty-f

Exploring the interplay between quantitative muscle strength, functional performance, and patient-reported outcomes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a cross-sectional pilot study.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) shows marked clinical heterogeneity, while standard clinical assessments may fail to capture its multidimensional burden. Integrating quantitative muscle strength, functional tests and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) may improve disease characterization. Ten ambulant adults with ALS were enrolled in a cross-sectional pilot study. Functional performance was assessed with the Revised ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R), Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Ten-Meter Walk Test, Timed Up and Go, Berg Balance Scale and a fatigability index, lower-limb strength with d

Adverse performance effects of acute lorazepam administration in elderly long-term users: pharmacokinetic and clinical predictors.

BACKGROUND: The benzodiazepine lorazepam is widely utilized in the treatment of elderly individuals with anxiety disorders and related conditions. Negative effects of acute lorazepam administration on cognitive performance, especially memory, have been reported in both previously untreated elderly and in individuals who have received short term (up to three weeks) treatment with therapeutic doses. However, it remains unclear if these adverse cognitive effects also persist after long-term use, which is frequently found in clinical practice. METHODS: Cognitively intact elderly individuals (n=37

A multivariate statistical and data mining analysis of spatial memory-related behaviour following bilateral vestibular loss in the rat.

Vestibular dysfunction in animals and humans is associated with a variety of cognitive and anxiety disorders, and it has been difficult to determine how the different symptoms may be related to one another. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which the spatial memory deficits that occur following bilateral vestibular deafferentation (BVD) in rats can be attributed to other behavioural symptoms. Spatial memory was measured using a spatial T maze alternation task (STM), while locomotor activity and anxiety were measured using open field, elevated plus and T mazes, respectively.

Identification and validation of an explainable screening model of college students' mental health with therapeutic strategy implications.

Mental health issues, especially depressive symptoms, among young adults represent a public health challenge. Conventional psychological assessment tools have limited sensitivity and specificity for identifying individuals at risk. This study aims to develop an explainable machine learning-based model to stratify concurrent depression risk in young adults. This study included 100,257 college students and collected mental health variables including depression, anxiety, resilience, parent-child relationship, and duration of mobile phone usage. The screening capabilities of 13 machine learning al

Standard of proof and intolerance of uncertainty in obsessive-compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Researchers have identified intolerance of uncertainty (IU) as a dysfunctional thought that contributes to OCD. Case examples of OCD suggest that uncertainty and anxiety persist despite low likelihoods of feared outcomes. In this study we examined how people with OCD react to minimal amounts of uncertainty relative to non-anxious individuals and a clinical comparison group of people with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: We created a questionnaire to measure the distress people feel when there is only minimal uncertainty regarding a given outcome and if they p

A phase 2, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BNC210, an alpha-7 nicotinic receptor negative allosteric modulator, for acute, as-needed treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD) - The PREVAIL study.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a chronic, debilitating, and prevalent neuropsychiatric condition for which an acute, as-needed therapy is an unmet medical need. This Phase 2 study evaluated a potential novel, fast-acting, anxiolytic, BNC210, in SAD patients (NCT05193409). PREVAIL was a placebo-controlled, acute dose study of 225 mg and 675 mg BNC210 in 151 adult participants with SAD. Anxiety was evaluated by self-report efficacy scales during the anticipation and performance phases of a simulated public speaking challenge. Safety data were collected. Least squares mean ± standard error (SE)

The behavioral avoidance task using imaginal exposure (BATIE): a paper-and-pencil version of traditional in vivo behavioral avoidance tasks.

Behavioral avoidance tasks (BATs) have been used for decades in the assessment of specific phobias, but they also involve a number of prohibitive difficulties. This study investigated a new imaginal/self-report instrument, the Behavioral Avoidance Task Using Imaginal Exposure (BATIE), and evaluated whether it was an efficient paper-and-pencil alternative. Forty-nine adults diagnosed with specific phobias were matched to 49 participants without those particular phobias who served as control participants. The participants were 89.8% female and 79.6% Caucasian and had a mean age of 20.81 years (S

Inhibitory control and symptom severity in late life generalized anxiety disorder.

Contemporary models of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) posit that worry functions as an avoidance strategy. During worry, individuals inhibit threat-related imagery in order to minimize autonomic reactivity to phobic topics. This conceptualization of worry suggests a role for the executive system in exerting top-down inhibitory control (IC) over threat processing. We tested the hypothesis that better performance on an IC task would be associated with greater severity of worry and concomitant anxious mood. Forty-three older adults (age 60-77) with GAD completed the Stroop color word task and
