Personality traits and the risk of incident (hypo)mania among subjects initially suffering from depressive and anxiety disorders in a 9-year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by the alternating occurrence of (hypo)manic and depressive episodes. The aim of the current study was to determine whether personality traits independently predicted the subsequent development of (hypo)manic episodes within a group of patients who were initially diagnosed with depressive and anxiety disorders. METHODS: The Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety is a cohort study with measurements taken at baseline and at 2-, 4-, 6-, and 9-year follow-up. Development of a (hypo)manic episode during follow-up was assessed with the Composi

Is negative parenting always harmful? The differential effects of parental rejection and parental overprotection on proactive personality in young adults.

The present study is anchored in the theoretical framework of ecological systems. Its objective is to investigate the underlying mechanisms through which negative parenting styles exhibited by parents influence the proactive personality of their offspring. The study will focus on the mediating effects of positive coping strategies and the moderating influences of teacher-student support. This study draws on survey data collected from a sample of 695 Chinese university students to empirically test the proposed hypotheses. The results demonstrated that: Initial findings indicated that parental r

Childhood Traumatic Experiences and ICD-11 Model of Personality Disorders: a Study Among Croatian Psychiatric Patients.

Childhood traumatic experiences have been implicated in the development of personality disorders (PDs), but research within the recent ICD-11 PD framework is still lacking. We aimed to explore the effects of various types of early trauma on the ICD-11 PD severity and maladaptive personality domains. In this cross-sectional study, 398 adult psychiatric patients (57% females; 32% PD) filled out the following self-report instruments: the ICD-11 Personality Disorder Severity Scale, the Personality Assessment Questionnaire for ICD-11, and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form. PD patients

Personality traits and combat exposure as predictors of psychopathology over time.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that personality traits have both direct and indirect effects on the development of psychological symptoms, with indirect effects mediated by stressful or traumatic events. This study models the direct influence of personality traits on residualized changes in internalizing and externalizing symptoms following a stressful and potentially traumatic deployment, as well as the indirect influence of personality on symptom levels mediated by combat exposure. METHOD: We utilized structural equation modeling with a longitudinal prospective study of 522 US National Guard

Meaning in Life as an Outcome of Inpatient or Day-Hospital Psychotherapy for Personality Disorder.

Psychotherapy may contribute to the experience of meaning in life. This study investigated meaning in life among patients with personality disorders during inpatient or day-hospital psychotherapy. Meaning in life was approached from two conceptual perspectives: personality functioning with an emphasis on self-direction and existential psychology. We investigated changes in the sense of meaning in life and accounted for changes in depressive symptoms and identity and interpersonal pathology. Using pre-post measures, Livesley's General Assessment of Personality Disorder, especially, the Lack-of-

Stressful life events as predictors of functioning: findings from the collaborative longitudinal personality disorders study.

OBJECTIVE: Although much attention has been given to the effects of adverse childhood experiences on the development of personality disorders (PDs), we know far less about how recent life events influence the ongoing course of functioning. We examined the extent to which PD subjects differ in rates of life events and the extent to which life events impact psychosocial functioning. METHOD: A total of 633 subjects were drawn from the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study (CLPS), a multi-site study of four personality disorders--schizotypal (STPD), borderline (BPD), avoidant (AV

A comparison of borderline personality features and level of personality functioning in explaining mentalizing capacity.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated that the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) outperforms traditional categorical nosology (i.e., Section II) in predicting an array of salient clinical outcomes. However, despite the centrality of social-cognitive impairments in personality disorder, few studies have examined the superiority of the AMPD over Section II in predicting social-cognitive deficits. The current study addresses this gap by evaluating the incremental validity of AMPD-defined level of personality functioning (LPF) versus borderline personality features in pre

[The personality-modulated dissimulative behavior of patients with paranoid schizophrenia].

The revealed variants dissimulation in 120 mental patients at initial stage of schizophrenia stimulated evaluation of premorbid personality changes and their significance in the formation of dissimulative tendencies. 63 patients showed reticence, 49--affective instability, 8--increased irritability and unmotivated mood changes. Comparative analysis of clinical variants of dissimulation with the aspects of personality permit to suggest their importance in formation of behaviour motives in the development of the schizophrenia process at the paranoia stage.

Associations Between Personality Disorder Characteristics, Psychological Symptoms, and Sexual Functioning in Young Women.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the etiology of sexual dysfunctions in women has been approached from different angles. In clinical practice and in previous studies, it has been observed that women with sexual problems experience anxiety problems and express more rigid and perfectionistic personality traits than women without these problems. AIM: To investigate whether personality disorder characteristics according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) and psychological symptoms are associated with sexual problems in women. METHODS: 188 wo

Trust in Therapeutic Work With Adolescents With and Without Personality Disorders: A Transference-Focused Therapy Perspective.

Trust is central to successful therapeutic work with adolescents, but establishing trust can be challenging, especially with adolescents with personality disorders. We present our understanding of trust in working with adolescents with and without personality disorders. We draw on complementary and overlapping perspectives, namely the attachment model, Kernberg's object relations model, and Fonagy's mentalization model. In Kernberg's object relations conceptualization, difficulties in trust experienced by patients with borderline personality disorders result from paranoia associated with split
