The relationship between personality types and the symptoms of emesis gravidarum in pregnant women was analyzed by means of the Cattel personality test (revised by Nishizono) performed in early and mid pregnancy. Personality types were classified into five from cyclothymia A to schizothymia E. As for emesis, the patients were also classified into three groups, severe (35), mild (41) and none (19), according to the severity and duration of the symptoms. As a result, there was no significant difference between the types and the symptoms, but significant differences were seen in interpersonal att

Shift workers face a heightened risk of insomnia. Recent research has yielded promising insights, but further progress is necessary to better treat insomnia in this group. The present pilot study evaluates how different characteristics impact sleep in shift workers to develop an innovative therapeutic approach. An online survey was administered to an ad hoc sample of N = 225 (112 shift workers), and correlations were calculated between sleep variables and specific characteristics (e.g., psychological impairment, personality traits, sleep-related behavior, attitudes towards sleep and shift work

Nonmedical prescription stimulant use (NPS) is increasing, particularly among college students. College students typically engage in NPS for cognitive enhancement, recreational, and appetite/weight-related purposes; however, little research has used these motives to identify specific risk for, or consequences of, NPS. Moreover, there may be unique risk factors for motive-specific NPS that have yet to be explored, such as relevant personality traits (i.e., distress tolerance, impulsivity, and perfectionism) that are associated with NPS in general. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether

The objective of the project was to compare the importance of traits desired in a life partner to traits desired in a sperm donor. A survey was distributed via internet support groups to women undergoing donor insemination and the questionnaire consisted of 35 traits of a desired life partner and of a desired sperm donor. The respondents comprised 278 unmarried childless heterosexual women over 38 years old undergoing donor insemination treatments. The 35 traits of a desired life partner and a desired sperm donor were grouped by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) into four factors: (i) persona

Several studies have been conducted on the effects of long-term imprisonment on mental health but only few with a longitudinal study design. Those with longitudinal design often have a very short observation period. In this study the data of 87 long-term prisoners have been compared over an average period of 14.6 years. A statistical comparison of two expert assessments of two experts at the beginning and the end of incarceration was made. Changes of mental disorders, of personality and intelligence tests and of physical diseases amongst others have been included in the analysis. The overall r

The interindividual variation of temperament features (such as anxiety, neuroticism, harm avoidance) is determined, in particular, by allele polymorphism of genes involved in serotonin metabolism and has earlier been associated with the insertion/deletion polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene. Polymorphic alleles of the serotonin 2A receptor gene (5HTR2A) were tested for association with personality traits assessed with several tests. The T102C and A1438G polymorphisms were associated with a variation in emotionality, activity, and sociability, which are integral characteristics of te

The importance of the personality of the dentist in the dental treatment of the anxious patient has been recognized for some time. However, there has been little research into the emotional reactions of dental students in similar stressful situations. This investigation, using specific psychological tests, examined the emotional reactions of clinical dental students (n = 99) not only as operators but also as patients. The data were analysed on the basis of normative values for the psychological tests compared with those values obtained by the dental students. This analysis was repeated on a se

The paper presents results of the examination of 70 patients with different forms of drug addiction (opium, heroin, pervitin addictions, including patients with polynarcomania). Psychologic tests were used to evaluate personal traits of the patients (MMPI variation), peculiarities of the emotional sphere (test of Lusher) and the intellectual level (Progressive Matrices of Raven). It was revealed that chronic drug dependence resulted in considerable disorders of personality--psychopathization and schizoidization. Intellectual abilities of the patients were on the low normal level.

Stress has a detrimental impact on memory, the hippocampus, and psychological health. Psychopathology research on stress has centered mainly on psychiatric diagnoses rather than symptom dimensions, and less attention has been given to the neurobiological factors through which stress might be translated into psychopathology. The present work investigates the transdiagnostic relationship of cumulative stress with episodic memory and the hippocampus (both structure and function) and explores the extent to which stress mediates the relationship between personality psychopathology and hippocampal s

The Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) was developed to measure a variety of personality variants on three biosocial dimensions, harm avoidance (HA), novelty seeking (NS), and reward dependence (RD), which are thought to be related to serotonin (5-HT), dopamine (DA), and norepinephrine (NE) function, respectively. Patients with eating disorders have been reported to have abnormalities in all of these systems, as well as personality variants described by these dimensions. We therefore administered the TPQ to 147 patients with DSM-III-R defined eating disorders (110 bulimia nervosa [

BACKGROUND: Disruptions in epistemic trust have been recognised as key sequelae of trauma and as markers of vulnerability to borderline personality pathology. However, prior research has relied primarily on self-reports and lacks behavioural measures of epistemic stance. The present pre-registered studies introduce a novel behavioural task-the Balloon Analogue Risk Task for Epistemic Trust (BART-ET)-and examine its associations with borderline personality features, trauma history, and psychological distress.
METHODS: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted with a combined sample of 273 you

Patients with sensitivities to multiple chemicals report symptoms of cognitive dysfunction, respiratory distress, and mood disturbance. Lifetime and current psychiatric disorders, personality traits associated with symptom reporting, and tests of cognitive function were compared between 30 subjects with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), 19 asthmatics, and 31 healthy controls. Relative to asthmatics and controls, more MCS subjects met criteria for current depression and somatization disorder. MCS subjects and asthmatics scored significantly higher than controls on scales of chemical odor i

This paper examines psychological correlates of self-assessed physical attractiveness (SAPA) across two studies. It tests ideas from evolutionary theory, namely that SAPA is related to a number of demographic, ideological, and personality variables that are status-signaling mechanisms related to success in the workplace. Participants rated their attractiveness on a 0-100 scale and completed measures of demographics, ideology, optimism, and six workplace personality traits (High Potential Trait Indicator). Study 1 (N = 799) included a Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance-based behaviora

Dimensional models of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, as seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), are instrumental in explaining the heterogeneity observed in this condition and for informing cutting-edge assessments. Prior structural work in this area finds that OC symptoms cross-load under both Negative Affectivity and Psychoticism traits within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) Alternative Model of Personality Disorder (AMPD). However, tests of OC symptoms in conjunction with assessments of the full AMPD structure and its 25 lower-level facet
