Gastrointestinal Digestion Impact on Phenolics and Bioactivity of Tannat Grape Pomace Biscuits.

The search for natural sources of bioactive compounds with health-promoting properties has intensified in recent years. Among these, Tannat grape pomace (TGP), a primary byproduct of winemaking, stands out for its high phenolic content, although its bioactivity may be affected during gastrointestinal digestion. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of in vitro digestion on the antioxidant (ABTS, ORAC-FL, intracellular ROS inhibition), anti-diabetic (α-glucosidase inhibition), anti-obesity (lipase inhibition), and anti-inflammatory (NO inhibition) properties of five sugar-free biscuits formul…

Metal-phenolic epigallocatechin gallate‑zinc antioxidant nanoparticles for cataract treatment.

In cataract, oxidative stress plays an important role. It breaks the balance of the antioxidant defense system by destroying biological macromolecules such as proteins, lipids and nucleic acids in the lens, induces lens opacity, and then leads to the formation of cataract. The antioxidant properties of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) are well-established, particularly its ability to scavenge ROS and modulate cellular pathways. However, its therapeutic potential is limited by poor stability and bioavailability. To overcome these challenges, the work is designed to form a metal-phenolic network …

From the gut to the brain: the long journey of phenolic compounds with neurocognitive effects.

The human gut microbiota is a complex community of micro-organisms that play a crucial role in maintaining overall health. Recent research has shown that gut microbes also have a profound impact on brain function and cognition, leading to the concept of the gut-brain axis. One way in which the gut microbiota can influence the brain is through the bioconversion of polyphenols to other bioactive molecules. Phenolic compounds are a group of natural plant metabolites widely available in the human diet, which have anti-inflammatory and other positive effects on health. Recent studies have also sugg…

Green Extraction of Wheat Phenolic Acids Using Microwave-Assisted Extraction.

Phenolic acids are important secondary metabolites in wheat, existing in free, conjugated, and bound forms. Traditional extraction methods use organic solvents like ethanol and acetone and are labor-intensive procedures. This study examined the extraction of phenolic acids from wheat using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) with water as the green extractant. The extraction of phenolic acids was performed on whole grain flour and on wheat kernels. MAE conditions were solvent type (water vs. 80% (v/v) ethanol), temperature (140, 160, 170, and 180°C), and extraction time (2, 5, 10, and 15 min).…

Transformations of phenolic compounds in cocoa shell during in vitro colonic fermentation.

Cocoa shell is a by-product generated by the cocoa processing industry, notable for its high content of phenolic compounds and methylxanthines, and recognized for their biological properties. The majority of cocoa phenolic compounds are not absorbed in the small intestine and reach the colon, where they can be catabolized by the gut microbiota, influencing their bioavailability and bioactivity. This research aimed to study the changes that phenolic compounds from cocoa shell flour (CSF) and extract (CSE) undergo during colonic fermentation after gastrointestinal digestion, using an in vitro mo…

pH-Responsive antibacterial metal-phenolic network coating on hernia meshes.

Polypropylene (PP) mesh is widely used in hernioplasty, but it is prone to contamination by pathogenic bacteria. Here, we present an infection microenvironment-responsive metal-phenolic network (MPN) coating, which is made up of Cu2+ and tannic acid (TA) (referred to as CT coating), and is fabricated on PP meshes by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The CT coating provided a robust protection for the PP mesh from pathogenic bacterial infection in a pH-responsive manner due to the pH-responsive disassembly kinetics of MPN complexes. Moreover, the PP meshes with ten CT coating cycles (PP-CT(10)) ex…

Electrochemical Investigation of the Oxidation of Phenolic Compounds Using Hypervalent Iodine Oxidants.

The chemical oxidation of simple phenolic compounds by the hypervalent iodine reagent [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]benzene (HTIB) was investigated using electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. HTIB oxidized phenol and benzenediol isomers hydroquinone (HQ), catechol, and resorcinol to form various quinone structures. HQ and catechol, two compounds that show reversible electrochemical behavior, exhibited simple oxidative chemistry to their respective quinone structures that could be electrochemically reduced at a glassy carbon electrode. An HTIB:compound ratio of 2:1 resulted in the complete chemic…

Plant terrestrialization: an environmental pull on the evolution of multi-sourced streptophyte phenolics.

Phenolic compounds of land plants are varied: they are chemodiverse, are sourced from different biosynthetic routes and fulfil a broad spectrum of functions that range from signalling phytohormones, to protective shields against stressors, to structural compounds. Their action defines the biology of land plants as we know it. Often, their roles are tied to environmental responses that, however, impacted already the algal progenitors of land plants, streptophyte algae. Indeed, many streptophyte algae successfully dwell in terrestrial habitats and have homologues for enzymatic routes for the pro…
