Protein glaucoma as a possible mechanism in a case of glaucomatocyclitic crisis and periphlebitis.

A case of glaucomatocyclitis crisis with recurrent episodes of increased I0P, abnormal appearance of the angle structure and periphlebitis was presented. Some of these episodes involving first one eye and later occurring bilaterally were characterized by absence of flare in the anterior chamber. It is suggested that protein leakage following retinal periphlebitis or an inflammatory reaction involving the ciliary body might be the underlying mechanism for the elevated ocular pressure. The abnormal angle structure in our patient favored this protein glaucoma. A permanent increase in I0P observed…

[Retinal vein periphlebitis - frequency, occurrence and diagnostic significance].

Among 15,000 neuroophthalmological patients examined in the years 1963 to 1977, 51 showed periphlebitic changes of the retinal veins. 46 of these patients were known to suffer from multiple sclerosis (MS). From his results that changes of the fundus of the eye are associated with a high degree of probability (about 90 per cent) with multiple sclerosis. In the same period of time, 422 patients were found to suffer from MS. From this one can calculate the relative frequency of periphlebitic changes of the retinal veins in MS cases to be about 10.9 per cent. Apart from their diagnostic importance

[The subclavian vein catheter related infections (author's transl)].

The aim of the present investigation was to study the possible means to prevent the subclavian vein catheter related infections. The tip of the catheter and the part situating at the skin puncture were cultured using the semiquantitative culture method. The growth of the micro-organisms was divided into three groups: classical pathogenic, opportunistic and non pathogenic. We did not find any growth in 64 p. cent of the catheters. The puncture site gave growth in 15 p. cent, the catheter tip in 6,5 p. cent and both of them in 14 p. cent In this study four cases (1,5 p. cent) of septicemias were

Phase I clinical and pharmacological study of merbarone.

Merbarone, a nonsedating derivative of thiobarbituric acid, has demonstrated excellent activity against certain murine tumors, including L12 … e levels that ranged from 100 to 1500 mg/m2/day. When the drug was administered by peripheral vein, phlebitis was observed at the infusion site at daily doses greater than or equal to 150 mg/m2. Therefore, all patients who received drug doses greater than or equal to 200 mg/m2 were treated by continuous i.v. infusion using central venous catheters. Renal in …

Analysis of 5 cases of PICC removal difficulty caused by fibroblastic sleeve.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the difficulties and solutions encountered during the removal of PICC catheters in five patients with a fibroblastic sleeve formation. METHODS: This study includes five cases of PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) removal difficulty caused by the formation of a fibroblastic sleeve. The patients were selected from a cohort with two cases involving the basilic vein in the right elbow fossa, two cases involving the brachial vein in the right elbow fossa, and one case involving the right cephalic vein. All patients underwent ultrasonography to exclude phlebitis and…

Things We Do for No Reason™: Routinely maintaining intravenous access in hospitalized patients.

Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are widely used in hospitalized patients and are often maintained even after the need for intravenous therapy has resolved. This article challenges the routine practice of maintaining idle PIVCs in clinically stable patients. While PIVCs offer convenient access for emergent treatment, they are associated with risks-including local infections, phlebitis, and vascular damage-as well as significant patient discomfort. Notably, although PIVCs carry a lower individual risk of bloodstream infection compared with central venous catheters, their widespread use …

Immunoglobulin G4-related thyroiditis associated with Graves' disease: A case report.

We report a case of immunoglobulin (ig)-g4-related thyroiditis associated with graves' disease. a 45-year-old man was diagnosed with graves' … cell infiltration with diffuse igg4-positive plasma cells (IgG4/IgG >40%), storiform fibrosis, and phlebitis obliterans throughout the thyroid tissue. Additionally, there were small foci of high columnar follicular components with scalloping, resembling Graves' disease. We propose that all patients with Graves' disease should be evaluated for coexisting Ig …

The "great imitator": IgG4-related disease of the oral cavity. Two case reports and scoping review.

This study aimed to review the lesser-known intraoral manifestations of immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). In this paper we report … amental for diagnosis. Conversely, the pathological features of storiform fibrosis and obliterative phlebitis were not common. Future reports regarding oral IgG4-RD should report clear adherence to the recognized international diagnostic criteria of the disease.

ANCA-associated vasculitis and IgG4-related disease overlap syndrome: a case report and literature review.

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitides are infrequent autoimmune diseases characterized by inflammation of the walls of small vessels leading to tissue and endothelial damage. On the other hand, IgG4-related disease is a fibroinflammatory disease characterized histologically by lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates with IgG4+ plasma cells, storiform fibrosis, and obliterative phlebitis that may affect nearly every organ of the body. There are similarities in clinical, serological, radiological, and histopathological features between both diseases, and hence, they usually…

Venous thromboembolism after ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze prevalence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy. METHOD: Clinical retrospective … lmonary embolism 0,3%) in a mean time of 44.0±42.2 days. Male gender, personal or family history of phlebitis or DVT and high caliber varicose veins were significantly associated to VTE. CONCLUSION: incidence of VTE is low, male gender, personal or family history of VTE and caliber of varicose veins greater than 7 mm increased the risk.

A case of thrombotic microangiopathy of unknown aetiology, clinically presenting as an acute surgical abdomen.

A 48-year-old woman presented with severe abdominal pain, bilious vomiting and bloody diarrhoea for 1 day. On examination, she was haemodyna … athic haemolytic anaemia. Bowel histology supported this, demonstrating circumferential lymphocytic phlebitis with thrombi and mucosal haemorrhage, necrosis and ulceration. The patient went on to suffer multiple ischaemic strokes before undergoing plasmapheresis, subsequent rehabilitation and making a successful recovery.

Early detection of sporadic pancreatic cancer: time for change.

Sporadic pancreatic cancer amounts to ∼90% of all pancreatic cancers. It is a gloomy depressive disease and the most recalcitrant malignancy, with a very low 5-year survival (3-6%). At present, diagnostic methods are commonly applied, as used half a century ago, after the appearance of local and systemic symptoms (abdominal and back pain, cholestasis, painless jaundice, fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, anemia, peripheral phlebitis, and cachexia). Unfortunately, these symptoms are harbingers of an advanced disease. The subsequent imaging methods may offer additional information on the location, …
