van der Waals Integrated Single-Crystal Tin Perovskite Transistors Toward Ultrasensitive Photodetection.

Two-dimensional (2D) tin halide perovskites have emerged as promising lead-free semiconductors with strong optical absorption and high carrier mobility. While polycrystalline films have achieved impressive device performance, their intrinsic charge transport and exciton dynamics remain obscured by grain-boundary-associated defects, limiting the fundamental understanding of material properties and optimization of device performance. Herein, by using bulky π-conjugated 4Tm+ cations, we synthesized 2D (4Tm)2SnI4 single crystals and assembled their van der Waals field effect transistors, exhibitin

The Interplay between Luminescence Dissymmetry Factor and Quantum Yield: Symmetric and Asymmetric Hydrogen Bonding.

Unraveling the luminescence-structure relationship in metal-free chiral perovskites remains challenging, particularly for achieving both a strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Here, we attempt to decode this hidden linkage by constructing the isomorphic polymorph-based metal-free chiral perovskite through the rational design of the A-site cation. The distinct steric hindrance between meta- and ortho-ammonium sites in 2-methylpiperazine-1,4-diium provides two possibilities for forming the hydrogen bond, which could control the crystalli

Dynamic Single-Atom Catalysts on Gallium To Overcome the Scaling Relationship Limit: AIMD Screening for CO2 Reduction and Hydrogen Evolution Reactions.

Extensive research has been conducted on single-atom catalysts (SACs) for a range of electrochemical reactions. However, static SACs suffer from scaling relationship limits, which hinder their further development. In this work, we introduce the idea of dynamic SACs supported on Gallium for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). We utilized AIMD and DFT calculations to systematically conduct high-throughput screening on s-, p-, d-, and f-block elements supported by Gallium denoted as M-SAC@Ga. We found that among all the understudied catalysts, Re-, Pt-, P

Giant thermally induced band-gap renormalization in anharmonic silver chalcohalide antiperovskites.

Silver chalcohalide antiperovskites (CAP), Ag3XY (X = S, Se; Y = Br, I), are a family of highly anharmonic inorganic compounds with great potential for energy applications. However, a substantial and unresolved discrepancy exists between the optoelectronic properties predicted by theoretical first-principles methods and those measured experimentally at room temperature, hindering the fundamental understanding and rational engineering of CAP. In this work, we employ density functional theory, tight-binding calculations, and anharmonic Fröhlich theory to investigate the optoelectronic properties

Characterization and Antimicrobial Assessment of Cadmium Sulfide Nanoparticles.

Resistance to conventional antibiotics remains a global health challenge. The search for more effective antimicrobial agents has led to the consideration of nanoparticles due to their potential biocidal activities. This study synthesized, characterized, and evaluated the antimicrobial behavior of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) during incubations at 37 °C and at room temperature (rt; 23 to 27 °C). XRD results showed that the synthesized nanoparticles had a cubic zinc blende structure, while microscopic investigations confirmed the particle size to be 7.236 nm on average. UV-Vis spectro

Metallic Bonding in Close-Packed Structures: Structural Frustration from a Hidden Gauge Symmetry.

Based on its simple valence electron configuration, we may expect lithium to have straightforward physical properties that are easily explained. However, solid lithium, when cooled below 77 K, develops a complex structure that has been debated for decades. A close parallel is found in sodium below 36 K where the crystal structure still remains unresolved. In this Letter, we explore a possible driving force behind this complexity. We begin with the observation that Li and Na form close-packed structures at low temperatures. We demonstrate a gauge symmetry that forces all close-packed structures

Efficient Light to Heat Conversion in Sb2Se3 Nanorods and the Role of Macro-channel Imprinted Sb2Se3 Loaded Hybrid Membrane for Superior Desalination Performance.

This report validates Sb2Se3 nanorods (NRs) as a potential contender for solar thermal heat generation. The water droplet experiment shows Sb2Se3's light-to-heat conversion efficiency as ≈57.8% for red (671 nm), 58% for green (532 nm) lasers. Following this PVDF(M)/ Sb2Se3 NRs hybrid membranes for solar desalination reached ≈59°C in 15 minutes of illumination. The heat generation is dominated by an electron/hole-acoustic phonon scattering mechanism. Despite having superior visNIR absorption and heat localization in Sb2Se3 NRs, the hybrid membranes show an evaporation rate of 1.72 kg m-2 h-1 on

Spin-Orbit Coupling Electronic Structures of Organic-Group Functionalized Sb and Bi Topological Monolayers.

Electronic band-gap is a key factor in applying two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators into room-temperature quantum spin Hall effect (QSH) spintronic devices. Employing pseudopotential plane-wave first-principles calculations, we investigate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) electronic structures of the novel 2D topological insulator series of antimony (Sb) and bismuth (Bi) monolayers (isolated double atomic layers) functionalized by organic-groups (methyl, amino and hydroxyl). Cohesive energies and phonon frequency dispersion spectra indicate that these organic-group decorated Sb and Bi monolay

A spatial and temporal characterisation of single proton acoustic waves in proton beam cancer therapy.

An in vivo range verification technology for proton beam cancer therapy, preferably in real-time and with submillimeter resolution, is desired to reduce the present uncertainty in dose localization. Acoustical imaging technologies exploiting possible local interactions between protons and microbubbles or nanodroplets might be an interesting option. Unfortunately, a theoretical model capable of characterising the acoustical field generated by an individual proton on nanometer and micrometer scales is still missing. In this work, such a model is presented. The proton acoustic field is generated

A Tunable Structural Family with Ultralow Thermal Conductivity: Copper-Deficient Cu1-x□xPb1-xBi1+xS3.

Understanding the mechanism that connects heat transport with crystal structures and order/disorder phenomena is crucial to develop materials with ultralow thermal conductivity (κ), for thermoelectric and thermal barrier applications, and requires the study of highly pure materials. We synthesized the n-type sulfide CuPbBi5S9 with an ultralow κ value of 0.6-0.4 W m-1 K-1 in the temperature range 300-700 K. In contrast to prior studies, we show that this synthetic sulfide does not exhibit the ordered gladite mineral structure but instead forms a copper-deficient disordered aikinite structure wi

Vacancy-Induced Thermal Transport and Tensile Mechanical Behavior of Monolayer Honeycomb BeO.

Because of the rapid shrinking trend of integrated circuits, the performances of nanodevices and nanomechanical systems are greatly affected by the joule heating and mechanical failure dilemma. In addition, structural defects are inevitable during experimental synthesis of nanomaterials, which may alter their physical properties significantly. Investigation of the thermal transport and mechanical behavior of nanostructured materials with structural defects is thus a crucial requirement. In this study, the thermal conductivity (TC) and tensile mechanical behavior of monolayer honeycomb BeO are

Exploring strong and weak topological states on isostructural substitutions in TlBiSe[Formula: see text].

Topological Insulators (TIs) are unique materials where insulating bulk hosts linearly dispersing surface states protected by the Time-Reversal Symmetry. These states lead to dissipationless current flow, which makes this class of materials highly promising for spintronic applications. Here, we predict TIs by employing state-of-the-art first-principles based methodologies, viz., density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory (G[Formula: see text]W[Formula: see text]) combined with spin-orbit coupling effects. For this, we take a well-known 3D TI, TlBiSe[Formula: see text] and perf

A Meta-Analysis of Conductive and Strong Carbon Nanotube Materials.

A study of 1304 data points collated over 266 papers statistically evaluates the relationships between carbon nanotube (CNT) material characteristics, including: electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties; ampacity; density; purity; microstructure alignment; molecular dimensions and graphitic perfection; and doping. Compared to conductive polymers and graphitic intercalation compounds, which have exceeded the electrical conductivity of copper, CNT materials are currently one-sixth of copper's conductivity, mechanically on-par with synthetic or carbon fibers, and exceed all the other materi

High energetic polymeric nitrogen sheet confined in a graphene matrix.

Polymeric nitrogen, as a potential high-energy-density material (HEDM), has many applications, such as in energy storage systems, explosives and propellants. Nowadays it is very urgent to find a suitable method to stabilize polymeric nitrogen at ambient conditions. Herein, we present a new hybrid structure where polymeric nitrogen sheets are sandwiched between graphene sheets in the form of a three-dimensional crystal. According to ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations and phonon spectrum calculations, it is demonstrated that polymeric nitrogen sheets are stable at ambient pressure

Compressibility and High-Pressure Structure of CaMg2Bi2 and YbMg2Bi2.

Compounds with the formula AM2X2 in the CaAl2Si2 structure type have garnered increasing interest across various solid-state research domains, such as quantum topological and thermoelectric materials. Prior studies have identified high-pressure phase transitions in several compounds, including Mg3Sb2, Mg3Bi2, CaMn2Bi2, and SrAl2Si2. In this study, we investigate the structural behavior of CaMg2Bi2 and YbMg2Bi2 under varying pressure conditions. We synthesized crystals using the molten metal flux method and examined them through single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, employing diamond an

Thermally Tunable Fading Memory Enabled by Opto-Ionic-Electronic Coupling in AgInP2S6-Gated Two-Dimensional Field-Effect Transistors.

In conventional field-effect transistors (FETs), the gate dielectric primarily provides electrostatic control of the channel and is engineered to remain chemically and electronically inert to ensure stable operation. Emerging studies, however, suggest that functional dielectrics integrated with two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors can introduce additional physical mechanisms that influence device behavior. Here, we investigate AgInP2S6 (AIPS), a high-κ van der Waals thiophosphate, as a functional top-gate dielectric in MoS2 field-effect transistors. The AIPS/MoS2 heterointerface exhibits couple

Quasiparticle Effects and Strong Excitonic Features in Exfoliable 1D Semiconducting Materials.

We report a first-principles study of the electronic and optical properties of recently identified one-dimensional semiconducting materials exfoliable from van der Waals-bonded bulk crystals. Specifically, we investigate four chalcogenide-based atomic chains, the covalently bonded S3 and Te3 chains, and polar-bonded As2S3 and Bi2Te3 chains, using a fully first-principles approach that combines density functional theory (DFT), density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), and many-body perturbation theory within the GW approximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). 2D Nanomaterials Toward Function-Ready Superlubricity in Advanced Microsystems.

The rapid evolution of micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems defines a new frontier of intelligent miniaturization, where interfacial friction and wear emerge as the fundamental bottlenecks limiting functional reliability and energy efficiency. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with van der Waals layered structures have redefined the pursuit of superlubricity, where the interfacial potential corrugation is minimized by lattice incommensurability, and energy dissipation is further suppressed through phonon spectrum mismatch and charge-mediated coupling at the sliding interface. These atomis
