Seeing words in context: the interaction of lexical and sentence level information during reading.

The ERP experiment reported here addresses some outstanding questions regarding word processing in sentential contexts: (1) Does only the 'message-level' representation (the representation of sentence meaning combining lexico-semantic and syntactic constraints) affect the processing of the incoming word [J. Exp. Psychol.: Learn. Mem. Cogn. 20 (1994) 92]? (2) Is lexically specified semantic relatedness between multiple words the primary factor instead [J. Exp. Psychol.: Learn. Mem. Cogn. 15 (1989) 791]? (3) Alternatively, do word and sentence level information interact during sentence comprehen

Finger coordination during moment production on a mechanically fixed object.

The moment production by several fingers on a mechanically fixed vertically oriented handle was studied under the systematic variations of task parameters such as (a) moment magnitude (1.0 Nm and 2.0 Nm) and (b) direction of moment production (into pronation and supination), as well as (c) vertical position of the handle from the moment axis, P (0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 cm in both directions). The purpose of this study was twofold: to investigate the dependences between the task parameters and the performance variables and to test the mechanical advantage hypothesis. The performance variables chan

What does the Ternus display tell us about motion processing in human vision?

The Ternus display is a moving visual stimulus which elicits two very different percepts, according to the length of the interstimulus interval (ISI) between each frame of the motion sequence. These two percepts, referred to as element motion and group motion, have previously been analysed in terms of the operation of a low-level, dedicated short-range motion process (in the case of element motion), and of a higher-level, attentional long-range motion process (in the case of group motion). We used a novel Ternus configuration to show that both element and group motion are, in fact, mediated so

The origin of pattern reversal short latency visual evoked potential as determined by dynamic topography and the dipole tracing method.

The generator sites of the parietal P59 and occipital N26 components elicited by hemi-field pattern reversal stimuli were investigated. The topographic distribution of the occipital N26 component showed a paradoxical lateralization, whereas that of the parietal P59 component exhibited an anatomical lateralization. The equivalent dipoles of both occipital N26 and parietal P59 components were situated on the deep mesial surface of the functioning occipital lobe. The differences in these locations were not statistically significant, but the vector moment of the parietal P59 component projected to

Neuronal correlates of inferred motion in primate posterior parietal cortex.

For many types of behaviours, it is necessary to monitor the position or movement of objects that are temporarily occluded. The primate posterior parietal cortex contains neurons that are active during visual guidance tasks: in some cases, even if the visual target disappears transiently. It has been proposed that activity of this sort could be related to current or planned eye movements, but it might also provide a more generalized abstract representation of the spatial disposition of targets, even when they are not visible. We have recorded from monkey posterior parietal cortex while the ani

[Movement-related potentials associated with motor inhibition during different types of stop signal paradigm in humans].

The motor inhibition process was examined in humans by monitoring reaction times, electromiograms, and movement-related potentials. Four subjects performed two types of visual stop signal paradigm. In one type, they were required to push a button (GO) or not to push it (NOGO), in another type, to release the button (GO) or to keep pushing it (NOGO). The results were summarized as follows; (1) The EEG waveform pattern was remarkably consistent among subjects. NO-GO-specific negative-positive potentials were observed under both tasks without significant background EMG activity changes in agonist

Preference for visual scanning strategies versus phonological rehearsal in university students with reading disabilities.

This study investigated strategic preferences for visual scanning versus phonological rehearsal for recognizing words, pronounceable letter strings, and symbol strings by university students with reading disabilities (RD). Forty-seven subjects participated in this study: 20 students with reading disabilities who reported current difficulties in reading, as well as problems in learning to read at an early age; 15 students with learning disabilities (LD) who reported current difficulties in learning in areas other than reading but did not recall difficulties in learning to read; and 12 nondisabl

Prediction of the prognosis in neonatal asphyxia by photo-evoked eyelid microvibration.

Neonatal asphyxia causes hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and may damage the central nervous system. We studied neonatal asphyxia with photo-evoked eyelid microvibration (PEMV) which is a blink reflex elicited by photic stimuli. The latency of PEMV changed according to the severity of encephalopathy and the degree of unconsciousness. All of the neonate who had showed disappearance of PEMV died. When the prolonged latency persisted, the infant had a strong probability of sustaining neurological sequelae. PEMV provides useful information for predicting the outcome of neonatal asphyxia.

[The origin of the electroretinogram induced by structured stimuli in man].

The Authors studied the checkerboard pattern electroretinogram (PERG) behaviour in normal subjects and in patients suffering from traumatic lesion of optic nerve, demyelinating optic neuritis, axonal optic neuritis, retinal vascular disorders and retinitis pigmentosa in order to verify the PERG origin. According to our data the PERG appears to originate from ganglion cells since the signal diminished or disappeared in axonal lesion of optic nerve, as a result of retrograde ganglion cell degeneration. Furthermore, the demyelinating lesions of optic nerve were not able to modify the PERG wave. I

The Peritest, a new automatic and semi-automatic perimeter.

The Peritest is a new automatic and semi-automatic (manual) perimeter for detection and limited assessment of visual field defects. It uses either multiple or single stimulus static perimetry. The lightsources are LED's. A total of 206 positions can be examined including the center; 151 positions inside 25 degrees-eccentricity. The programmes use a threshold-related gradient adapted suprathreshold (0.6) strategy. The results are printed on a special chart using non-interpolated grey scales for indicating local reduction of sensitivity. General and local reduction of sensitivity are separated.

Visual evoked potentials in Reye's syndrome.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) induced by flash stimulation in a child who was recovering from Reye's syndrome with complaints of poor left-eye vision were recorded. Ophthalmological examination disclosed intact visual fields and normal visual acuity. Analysis of VEP's, however, showed a grossly abnormal configuration of wave forms, marked prolongation in latency and reduction in amplitude when the left eye was stimulated. Follow-up observation 3 weeks later showed parallel improvements in VEPs and subjective complaints. Thus, from VEP analysis, it may be possible to detect subtle changes in

[Comparative analysis of the effects of alcoholic drinks of different qualities (author's transl)].

The authors compared the effects of alcoholic drinks rich in fusel oil with the effects of diluted pure alcohol of the same quantity on 19 clinically healthy university students. The investigations utilized EEG and physiopsychic testing methods. The clinical symptoms were observed both under the effect of drinks and in a crapulous state ("hang-over"). It was found that alcoholic drinks rich in fusel oil can produce a more deviating EEG curve, an increased worsening of physiopsychic performance and of clinical and subjective symptoms. The necessity of regular quality control of alcoholic bevera

Predicting upcoming visual features during eye movements yields scene representations aligned with human visual cortex.

Natural scenes are complex arrangements of objects, surfaces, and backgrounds. For the brain's visual system to effectively operate, it needs to extract not only what objects are present but also their spatial and semantic relations. We hypothesize that such structures may be learned, in a self-supervised fashion, by exploiting temporal regularities of natural active vision: Each fixation reveals a glimpse that is related to the previous one via co-occurrence and saccade-conditioned spatial regularities. We instantiate this idea with glimpse prediction networks (GPNs), recurrent models trained

Foveated metamers of the early visual system.

OBJECTIVE: Exercise has been reported to suppress colorectal cancer; however, the mechanism of suppression by exercise and its effect on the Wnt pathway, which is particularly involved in the early stage of carcinogenesis, remain unclear. In this study, we subjected ApcMin/+ mice to exercise by shaking stimuli to investigate the mechanisms of suppressing colorectal cancer, and focused on the Ca2+ pathway, which is one of the β-catenin-independent Wnt signaling pathways that suppress the accumulation of β-catenin. METHODS: Mice in the exercise group were subjected to exercise by shaking stimul
