Indication for initiation of mechanical circulatory support impacts survival of infants with shunted single-ventricle circulation supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

OBJECTIVES: The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to support patients with shunted single-ventricle physiology has been controversial. Variable survivals are reported in a number of small case series. We sought to evaluate outcomes and identify predictors of survival for patients with shunted single-ventricle physiology who require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients aged less than 1 year with shunted single-ventricle physiology who were supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation at Children's H

[Epidemiology of arbovirus diseases: use and value of physiologic age determination of female mosquito vectors].

The physiological age of Yellow Fever Aedes females in Africa was studied during four years, from 1988 to 1992. We used a method, according to Polovodova's method, which looks for the "yellow body" under natural light. Those yellow bodies exist in the old females, the "parous" ones, and not in the young females, the "nulliparous" ones. We present some results to illustrate the interest of studying the physiological age of mosquitoes in the epidemiology of the arboviral diseases. The transmission risk, in relation with abundance and parity rate was illustrated, in particular for Aedes africanus

A unified framework for sapwood and stem water content in plants: structure, function, and measurement.

Stem water content is a fundamental parameter governing key plant physiological processes, including transpiration, stomatal conductance, sap flow, and hydraulic capacitance. Although extensively studied in the context of timber, construction, and engineering, its physiological significance in living plants remains comparatively underdeveloped. This review synthesises the physiological literature to provide a clear and consistent definition of stem water content, partitioning it into bark, phloem, sapwood, and heartwood components, with particular emphasis on sapwood water content. A theoretic

Heat acclimation prevents neurobehavioral and physiological disorders in mice exposed to chronic aircraft noise.

We aimed to test whether heat acclimation (HA) would protect against aircraft noise (AN)-induced neurobehavioral and physiological disorders in mice. A total of 90 adult male mice were equally divided into three groups: control (c) plus non-AN group, c plus AN group, and HA plus AN group. Neurobehavioral performances included passive avoidance tasks (to assess learning and memory function), Y-maze tests (to assess spatial memory ability), and novel object recognition tests. Physiological functions included stress responses, inflammation, and oxidative stress, which were determined biochemicall

Cerebral microvascular physiology associated with white matter lesion burden differs by level of vascular risk in typically aging older adults.

White matter lesions (WMLs) are prevalent with aging, and higher WML burden has been observed in older adults with vascular diseases. While the physiology underlying the formation of WMLs is not known, various risk factors are associated with high WML burden. Here, we investigated the relationship between vascular risk factors and microvascular physiology (i.e., oxygen supply and oxygen extraction fraction [OEF]) and their association with WML burden. Forty-one typically aging adults (60-80 years) were classified into high or low vascular risk based on common modifiable vascular risk factors (

Approaches to modeling the development of physiological stress responsivity.

Influential biopsychosocial theories have proposed that some developmental periods in the lifespan are potential pivot points or opportunities for recalibration of stress response systems. To date, however, there have been few longitudinal studies of physiological stress responsivity and no studies comparing change in physiological stress responsivity across developmental periods. Our goals were to (a) address conceptual and methodological issues in studying the development of physiological stress responsivity within and between individuals, and (b) provide an exemplar for evaluating developme

Effects of stimulation by three-dimensional natural images on prefrontal cortex and autonomic nerve activity: a comparison with stimulation using two-dimensional images.

Empirical evidence suggests that three-dimensional (3D) images of nature promote physiological relaxation in humans by providing more realistic effects compared with two-dimensional (2D) images. However, no studies have evaluated the physiological relaxation effects of nature-derived 3D images on prefrontal cortex and autonomic nerve activity. The present study aimed to clarify the physiological relaxation effects of visual stimulation by 3D flower images on prefrontal cortex and autonomic nerve activity. Nineteen male university students (22.2 ± 0.6 years) were presented with 3D and 2D images

Effect of physiological and pharmacological stress on heart rate, blood pressure, and echocardiographic measurements in healthy Warmblood horses.

BACKGROUND: Echocardiographic measurements are important prognostic indicators but might be influenced by heart rate and blood pressure. This is particularly important when comparing repeated examinations. HYPOTHESIS: To determine the effect of physiological stress at mildly increased heart rates and pharmacological challenge using IV administration of N-butylscopolammonium bromide and metamizol sodium on heart rate, blood pressure, and echocardiographic measurements. ANIMALS: Twenty healthy Warmblood horses. METHODS: Randomized crossover study. Horses were examined echocardiographically by

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) improves outcomes in elderly patients undergoing short-level lumbar fusion surgery: a retrospective study of 333 cases.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative lumbar disease significantly impairs the quality of life in elderly individuals, with short-segment lumbar degenerative disease being particularly prevalent. When conservative treatment proves ineffective, surgical intervention becomes the optimal choice for managing lumbar disease. The implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) in spinal surgery has been progressively refined, leading to greater patient benefits. However, age and the associated decline in physiological function remain critical factors influencing surgical decision-making. Currently, ther

Restrictive physiology in tetralogy of Fallot: exercise and arrhythmogenesis.

The effect of right ventricular restrictive physiology on exercise capacity and arrhythmogenesis after correction of tetralogy of Fallot was assessed in 80 patients aged 7.9 +/- 3.6 years. Right ventricular restrictive physiology was defined as the presence of an A wave across the pulmonary artery on 2-dimensional echocardiography. At the 6 month follow-up, 52 patients had restrictive physiology (group 1). A transannular patch was used in 36 patients in group 1 (62%) and in 19 (86%) of the 28 patients without restrictive physiology (group 2). Maximum heart rate attained (69% vs. 77%), maximum

Physiological Patterns of Coronary Artery Disease and Drug-Coated Balloon Performance.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse coronary artery disease (CAD) challenges stent-based percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Drug-coated balloons (DCBs) offer a stentless strategy, but the physiological response in focal compared with diffuse disease remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed to investigate the impact of physiological patterns on angiographic and physiological outcomes after DCB-PCI. METHODS: In this international cohort, patients underwent DCB-PCI for de novo lesions with angiographic follow-up at 5 months (IQR: 3-7). Quantitative coronary angiography and Murray's law-based quant

[Differentialdiagnostic of the kneearthrography: bursa--ganglion--capsule rupture (author's transl)].

Based on 600 arthrogramms physiologic recessus is compared with ganglion for differential-diagnostic purposes. The great variance between small and big recessus of the regio genu posterior will be demonstrated. Flexion of the knee joint favour confusion with ganglion. The radiologic and differential diagnostic valuable criteria of the physiologic recessus and ganglion is shown. Finally the characteristics of Baker's cyst as well as posterior capsule rupture are discussed.

Physiology-guided bilateral pulmonary artery banding in high-risk neonates: early hemodynamic and perfusion outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Balancing pulmonary and systemic blood flow remains one of the most critical challenges in the management of high-risk neonates with ductal-dependent circulation, particularly in the presence of low birth weight, sepsis, shock, restrictive interatrial communication, or complex congenital cardiac anatomy. Bilateral pulmonary artery banding (biPAB) is frequently employed as an initial stabilizing strategy to control pulmonary overcirculation; however, optimal band tightness remains largely experience-based, and uniform band sizing may be associated with variable physiological respons

Streaming to Connect: Exploring How Social Connectedness Relates to Empathy Types and Physiological States in Remote Virtual Audiences.

Examining remote virtual audiences is a vital part of understanding social experiences in modern human-computer interaction contexts. Doing so raises intriguing questions about how these mediated connections relate to emotional and physiological states. The vagus nerve is central to socioemotional processing and physiological well-being, with its activation represented as vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV). We examine how participants' social connectedness to virtual partners relates to their experience of socioemotional competences and psychophysiological states while observing s

Concurrent physiologic and gene-based genetic newborn hearing screening in a general population.

BACKGROUND: Physiologic newborn hearing screening (NBHS) has several weaknesses requiring improvement. Studies have explored variant-based genetic NBHS as a complement to physiologic NBHS. However, this genetic NBHS strategy has fundamental limitations that challenge logistics. METHODS: Given findings that a small set of genes accounts for the majority of genetic etiologies of hearing loss (HL), we designed a gene-based genetic NBHS strategy that screens for genes instead of limited variants, targeting the coding regions of twelve HL-related genes and the aminoglycoside-induced HL risk gene MT

Spinal mobility and posture: changes during growth with postural defects, structural scoliosis and spinal osteochondrosis.

A number of case studies were followed for 10 years. Children suffering from postural defects, structural scoliosis and spinal osteochondrosis were separated from a normal group. Spinal mobility and posture were compared with the mobility of normal, healthy boys and girls aged 5-14 years. In postural defects curves similar to the physiologic one were observed. The range of motion was not physiologic in scoliosis. In this disease, rotation-flexion thoracic hypermobility with decreased lumbar flexion ability was found. A physiologic trend was found in spinal osteochondrosis, although sometimes t

Use of low temperature and high K+ incubation media for in vitro tissue preparation for X-ray microanalysis.

Incubation of tissue slices in physiological buffers gives rise to significant changes in the intracellular ion concentrations, which may disturb subsequent X-ray microanalysis. In the present study it was attempted to design incubation conditions that retain the in vivo conditions better. The following variables were investigated: (1) exchange of Na+ in the incubation medium for K+, and exchange of Cl- for the less permeable gluconate anion; (2) incubation at 4 degrees C rather than at 37 degrees C; and (3) addition of dextran to the incubation medium. Brief exposure (a few seconds) of liver

Differential miRNA expression in the three-spined stickleback, response to environmental changes.

miRNAs play important role in the various physiological and evolutionary processes, however, there is no data allowing comparison of evolutionary differences between various ecotypes adapted to different environmental conditions and specimen demonstrating immediate physiological response to the environmental changes. We compared miRNA expression profiles between marine and freshwater stickleback populations of the three-spined stickleback to identify the evolutionary differences. To study the immediate physiological response to foreign environment, we explored the changes induced by transfer o
