BACKGROUND: Pinschers and other dogs with coat color dilution show a characteristic pigmentation phenotype. The fur colors are a lighter shade, e.g. silvery grey (blue) instead of black and a sandy color (Isabella fawn) instead of red or brown. In some dogs the coat color dilution is sometimes accompanied by hair loss and recurrent skin inflammation, the so called color dilution alopecia (CDA) or black hair follicular dysplasia (BHFD). In humans and mice a comparable pigmentation phenotype without any documented hair loss is caused by mutations within the melanophilin gene (MLPH).

A 19-year-old woman with a condition since birth, comprising reticular hyperpigmentation, palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, dental anomalies, hypoplasia of dermatoglyphics and a slight yellowish hue to the nails is presented. Pigmented vulvar lesions, including diffuse hyperpigmentation, are present in 10% to 12% of white women. About 2% of them are nevocellular nevi. In general, nevi on the vulva are identical by morphologic and histopathologic criteria to nevi elsewhere on the body, with the exception of a small subset of nevi in younger women. Incontinentia pigmenti is characterized by swirled hyperpigmentation associated with incontinence of pigment. A different pattern may be seen on the legs with light-colored atrophic scarred areas admixed with patches of normal but darker skin. Histologic examination confirms that the darker skin is normal without incontinence of pigment, while the light-colored skin lacks melanocytes and appendages but has dermal fibrosis.

Both aging spots (hyperpigmentation) and hair graying (lack of pigmentation) are associated with aging, two seemingly opposite pigmentation phenotypes. The general distribution of 3H-haloperidol was studied in mice by means of whole body autoradiography. Extensive accumulation and retention was observed in the melanin containing tissues. Claw disorders cause problems in dairy cattle all over the world. Nutrition, feeding, environment, claw trimming routines, hormonal changes related to calving and genetics are among the factors which influence the pathogenesis. γ-Oryzanol, a prevalent compound in pigmented rice varieties, has been reported to ameliorate obesity-associated metabolic disorders.
