Milk Products in the Treatment of Hypophosphatemic Rickets: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Standard treatment of hypophosphatemic rickets (HR) is oral phosphate tablets plus vitamin D. Due to the rapid absorption of phosphate tablets, frequent daily doses are necessary, which is cumbersome and may cause fluctuations in plasma phosphate and risk of secondary hyperparathyroidism. It was hypothesized that phosphate from milk or cheese is less rapidly absorbed, and reduces fluctuations in plasma phosphate. OBJECTIVES: The current randomized, multiple crossover study aimed at investigating if an equivalent phosphate dose given as milk or cheese is comparable to phosphate tab

SmokefreeTXT for Homeless Smokers: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Homeless smokers want to quit smoking but face numerous barriers to doing so, including pervasive smoking among peers and a lack of social support for quitting. An SMS (short message service) text messaging intervention could address these challenges by providing virtual daily support for homeless smokers who are trying to quit but coping with multiple triggers to smoke. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether a free SMS text messaging program, added to evidence-based pharmacotherapy and counseling, improved smoking abstinence among homeless adult smokers. METHODS: From Oct

Pilot Study on the Cost of Some Oncohematology Diseases in Bulgaria.

The goal of the current study is to perform a pilot study of the cost of some oncohematology diseases in Bulgaria. This is a pilot broader burden of disease research. The official report of the National health insurance fund provided information about the total expenditures paid for medicines, ambulatory services, and hospitalizations in 2015 and 2016. To evaluate the costs from a patient perspective, an internet inquiry was organized with the support of the patient organization. The inquiry contained questions regarding the patients' demography, type of oncohematology disease, year of diagnos

Vergence Endurance Test: A Pilot Study for a Concussion Biomarker.

The Vergence Endurance Test (VET), a quantitative and objective eye movement assessment, was utilized to differentiate control from concussed subjects. Nine symptomatic concussed (2 male; 30.8 ± 11 years) and 9 asymptomatic control (6 male; 25.1 ± 1.4 years) subjects participated in the VET. Symmetrical disparity vergence step targets were presented with and without visual distractors. A masked data analyst measured vergence latency, peak velocity, response amplitude, settling time, and the percentage of trials which contained blinks. A Binocular Precision Index (BPI) and a Binocular Accuracy

Somatocognitive therapy of women with provoked vulvodynia: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) is a common persistent pain state among women in the Western world, causing dyspareunia, psychological distress and challenges against fertility. Therapies aimed at relieving pain (physiotherapy) and psychological distress (psychotherapy) are often recommended, sometimes in multimodal combinations. We have previously developed somatocognitive therapy (SCT) as a multimodal intervention, administered by a physiotherapist, to a different group of patients with gynecological pain, i.e. chronic (unprovoked) pelvic pain (CPP, also referred to as low

The cardiovascular aspects of a Ménière's disease population - A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: MD is considered a rare disease. An adequate model that explains MD's pathophysiology is not well established. Recently, the vascular theory of the disease has been revived. OBJECTIVES: To characterize a MD population according to its cardiovascular risk and correlate it to the MD clinical course. METHODS: In this retrospective chart study the data of 31 MD patients observed between January 2017 and April 2018 in a tertiary university hospital were reviewed. Patients included in the study were diagnosed according to the Bárány Society criteria. Lost follow-ups, patients with au

Motor imagery in chronic neglect: An fMRI pilot study.

AIM: Previous studies indicate the effectiveness of motor imagery training in stroke patients. To determine whether patients showing chronic visuospatial neglect symptoms may profit from motor imagery training, it is important to assess how the brain implements motor imagery when cortical systems involved in attentional control are impaired. METHOD: Therefore, in this pilot study, nine chronic neglect patients with right-hemispheric stroke performed motor imagery of a finger opposition task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). RESULTS: Imagery of unaffected hand movements was

Pilot Single-Blind Trial of AbobotulinumtoxinA in Oromandibular Dystonia.

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) causes involuntary movements of masticatory and lingual muscles impairing eating, speaking, and swallowing. Treatment options are limited. The objective of this study was to determine the safety and efficacy of abobotulinumtoxinA (aboBoNTA) in OMD. A dose-finding study (phase 1) followed by a single session, prospective, single-blind trial (phase 2) was carried out. OMD subjects were evaluated at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks. Muscles injected were tailored to individual symptoms using EMG guidance, but the aboBoNTA dose for each muscle was pre-specified based on phase

Impact of Oncoming Headlight Glare With Cataracts: A Pilot Study.

Purpose: Oncoming headlight glare (HLG) reduces the visibility of objects on the road and may affect the safety of nighttime driving. With cataracts, the impact of oncoming HLG is expected to be more severe. We used our custom HLG simulator in a driving simulator to measure the impact of HLG on pedestrian detection by normal vision subjects with simulated mild cataracts and by patients with real cataracts. Methods: Five normal vision subjects drove nighttime scenarios under two HLG conditions (with and without HLG: HLGY and HLGN, respectively), and three vision conditions (with plano lens, sim

A pilot serosurvey of Babesia microti in Chinese blood donors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Babesia spp. are tick-borne, intraerythrocytic protozoan parasites, several of which are transfusion-transmissible. Transfusion-transmitted babesiosis poses serious risk to a diverse patient population, including neonates, patients aged >50 years, the asplenic and the immunocompromised that are over-represented among transfusion recipients. Despite reports of B. microti and B. venatorum in People's Republic of China (PRC), no surveillance of blood donors for Babesia has previously been undertaken. We sought to determine the rates of B. microti seroreactivity in a sam

The socioeconomic impact of a pediatric ostomy in Uganda: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple pediatric surgical conditions require ostomies in low-middle-income countries. Delayed presentations increase the numbers of ostomies. Patients may live with an ostomy for a prolonged time due to the high backlog of cases with insufficient surgical capacity. In caring for these patients in Uganda, we frequently witnessed substantial socioeconomic impact of their surgical conditions. METHODS: The operative log at the only pediatric surgery referral center in Uganda was reviewed to assess the numbers of children receiving ostomies over a 3-year period. Charts for patients
