The sonographic findings in fetal triploidy syndrome include intrauterine growth retardation, hydrocephalus, oligohydramnios, and hydropic changes of the placenta. Ultrasonography can establish the diagnosis only when placental findings coexist with a fetus. Although the majority of triploid conceptions abort spontaneously in the first trimester, occasionally they will progress further, but rarely to term. Six cases are presented in which the diagnosis was suspected by early ultrasound examinations, including one case in which there was an unusually large trophoblastic cyst. Determination of t

We have investigated the presence and clinical implications of maternal vascular lesions and chronic villitis of unknown etiology (CVUE) in 18 placentas of 15 mothers with several autoimmune diseases (AD), including, for the first time, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, autoimmune thyroid diseases, and multiple sclerosis. The group with AD had significantly more maternal vascular lesions and CVUE than the control group. We did not find lesions that could be attributed to any of the diseases in particular. The histopathologic picture was similar in these diseases, although there appears to b

Placental site trophoblastic tumor is a rare variant of trophoblastic disease. The malignant form of this disease with metastasis and death is even more infrequent, as is evident from only five cases in the literature. A 30-year-old black woman who died from this disease is presented. Patients with metastases are at extremely high risk with no reported survivors and must be treated aggressively with chemotherapy and cytoreductive surgery. This type of trophoblastic tumor apparently exhibits a different biologic behavior as compared with choriocarcinoma.

This work was done as the first part of a continuing study of neonatal blood. In a recent paper (1), two parameters, "A" (relative whole-blood viscosity at unit rate of shear and 1% haematocrit) and "beta" (shear-sensitivity exponent) were proposed, as characteristics of a given blood-sample. Here, some 60 placentae yielded (after plasma-manipulation) 130 sub-samples having haematocrits ranging from 3% to 90%. Their viscosities were measured in a capillary viscometer set for a constant wall shear-stress of 1855 mPa. "A" and "beta" were calculated by the method given in (1). Multiple calculatio

Polypeptides of 61,500 and 64,500 apparent molecular weights were the precursor and fully processed forms of placental alkaline phosphatase monomer synthesized by choriocarcinoma cells in vivo. [3H] Mannose was incorporated into both polypeptides whereas [3H] glucosamine was incorporated mainly into the 64,500-dalton polypeptide, suggesting processing by the addition of glucosamine moieties. In the absence of microsomal membranes, choriocarcinoma mRNA directed the cell-free synthesis of the preprotein form of alkaline phosphatase monomer of apparent Mr = 60,000. The unglycosylated monomer had

The placenta can provide information that is helpful in determining the developmental pathogenesis of various structural defects. If a velamentous insertion of the umbilical cord or a short cord is noted, it is most likely that any associated structural defects in the newborn infant are deformational in nature secondary to the same factor that lead to the velamentous insertion or a short cord.

A 32-year-old white woman with a history of 2 episodes of abruptio placentae was found to have congenital hypofibrinogenemia. She had no bleeding difficulties except when pregnant. The patient's sisters and her mother also had reduced fibrinogen levels. Results of fibrinogen measurement by clotting assays and immunologic studies were similar. Immunoelectrophoresis, molecular weight of fibrinogen chains, cross-linking by factor XIII, carbohydrate staining, and sialic acid quantitation were all normal, suggesting the diagnosis of hypofibrinogenemia rather than dysfibrinogenemia. Fibrinolysis did

Fetal growth retardation due to maternal malnutrition is widespread especially in the Third World. Little is known about the mechanisms that regulate the growth of the fetus and placenta during protein malnutrition. It is known that the placental size and levels of circulating placental hormones such as human chorionic gonadotrophins (hCG), human placental lactogen (hPL), and estrogens are affected by the nutritional status of the mother. There is suggestive evidence that during malnutrition, hPL may increase lipolysis and exert a glucose sparing effect in the mother, thereby promoting glucose

A 30 year old woman was seen at 32 weeks of gestation because of severe abdominal pain. A sonogram revealed an irregular, 5 cm-diameter cystic structure in the placenta. Examination of the placenta after cesarean section showed an extremely large maternal lake.

A case of placental chorioangioma is reported. To our knowledge, this is the first case diagnosed prenatally by ultrasonography, The complications of chorioangiomas include hydramnios, antepartum hemorrhage and premature labor, fetal demise, low birth weight and toxemia.

We encountered two cases of maternal coccidioidomycosis with placental involvement. Altered cell-mediated immunity during pregnancy makes the diagnosis of desseminated coccidioidomycosis difficult by the routine serologic tests; placental examination provides specific information. A high index of suspicion regarding this disease and prompt institution of appropriate therapy are necessary in order to decrease maternal and neonatal mortality.
