EEG asymmetries may be affected by cranial and brain parenchymal asymmetries.

The plagiocephaly index, an index that reflects an underlying anatomic asymmetry of the brain, was assessed in ten schizophrenic patients and its values were correlated with the lateral distribution of quantitatively evaluated EEG. The correlations between the index and alpha power at F7 were significant, positive for frontal asymmetry (frontal bulging) and negative for occipital flattening. We then studied ten normal subjects in an attempt to illuminate the contribution of several cephalic and cranial variables to the imbalance of alpha-afterdischarges (AD) of VEP recorded at O1-O2. The asymm…

Brain Characteristics Noted Prior to and Following Cranial Orthotic Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This case report aims to assess a potential association between cranial asymmetry, brain deformation, and associated developmental delay. STUDY DESIGN: Two infants born at ≥37 weeks pursuing cranial orthotic treatment for severe Deformational Plagiocephaly (DP) (cranial vault asymmetry index >8.75%) underwent developmental assessment using Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL) and non-sedated brain structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to and following cranial orthotic treatment. RESULTS: In both infants with DP, tractography results revealed alterations…

Familial interstitial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 4 (p15.33-p16.3) characterized by molecular cytogenetic analysis.

This 15-month boy was expressed at the cytogenetic laboratory because of psychomotor development delay. He was tall and had plagiocephaly, micrognathia, high nasal bridge, anteverted nostrils and pectus excavatum. A 46,XY,del(4)(p16.1p16.3) karyotype was found using high-resolution R-banding technique. FISH studies using the LSI Wolf-Hirschhorn dual color 4p16.3 and the TelVysion 4p probes showed no deletion. Using BACs, the distal breakpoint was located in 4p16.3, between RP11-165K4 and RP11-717M10 and the proximal breakpoint in 4p15.33, between RP11-74M11 and RP11-1J7; therefore, approximate…

Prevention and management of positional skull deformities in infants. American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Practice and Ambulatory Medicine, Section on Plastic Surgery and Section on Neurological Surgery.

Cranial asymmetry may be present at birth or may develop during the first few months of life. Over the past several years, pediatricians have seen an increase in the number of children with cranial asymmetry, particularly unilateral flattening of the occiput. This increase likely is attributable to parents following the American Academy of Pediatrics "Back to Sleep" positioning recommendations aimed at decreasing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Although associated with some risk of deformational plagiocephaly, healthy young infants should be placed down for sleep on their backs. This…

Transcranial Doppler analysis of cerebral hemodynamics in primary craniosynostosis: study in progress.

BACKGROUND: Regional elevations in intracranial pressure (ICP) have been monitored adjacent to areas of cranial stenosis by some authors [9, … ncidence of increased resistivity indices (RI) was 70%. Patients with asymmetric skull deformities (plagiocephaly) or sagittal synostosis (scaphocephaly) were statistically more prone to exhibit increased RI compared to previously reported prevalences. CONCLUSIONS: Because TCD is a convenient, rapid, accurate, and noninvasive method by which to gauge ICP, it s …

[Study by I-123-IMP-SPECT before and after surgery for craniosynostosis].

Single photon emission computed tomography with N-isopropyl-p-[I-123]iodoamphetamine was performed in 13 cases of craniosynostosis before and after surgery. Of 13 cases, 8 cases (62%) showed focal low perfusion area on preoperative study. Four of seven cases (57%) with brachycephaly showed low perfusion areas in either of frontal lobes, occipital lobes, and cerebellum. Besides, two patients with scaphocephaly and one with plagiocephaly showed low perfusion area in unilateral cerebral hemisphere. Two Crouzon disease cases showed no focal low perfusion area, but an Apert disease showed low perfu…

Scoliosis of the cranial base: radiological and mathematical analysis using finite elements system analysis (FESA) of a case.

INTRODUCTION AND PROPOSED STUDY: Numerous deforming syndromes of the craniofacial complex involve also the symmetry of the cranial base. This study considers a particular alteration, that of 'scoliosis', in which the line Nasion-Sella-Basion-Inion is not rectilinear but curved, due to a torsion of the cranial base in the horizontal plane. MATERIALS: Plagiocephaly was studied in one patient, which was probably caused by altered timing or mechanism of closure of the cranial sutures. METHODS: This study was carried out using CT images of the patient's craniofacial complex, using standard neuror…

Synchrotron-microcomputed tomography studies of normal and pathological cranial sutures: further insight.

OBJECT: Both CT and high-frequency ultrasound have been shown to be reliable diagnostic tools used to differentiate normal cranial sutures from suture synostosis. In nonsynostotic plagiocephaly, overlapping of the bony plates and the so-called "sticky suture" is still controversial and is believed to represent a pathological fusion process. Synchrotron-microcomputed tomography (SRmCT) studies were undertaken to determine whether positional head deformities can be assumed to be true suture pathologies. METHODS: Morphological features and growth development of 6 normal cranial sutures between t…

Nasal soft-tissue and vault deviation in unicoronal synostosis.

BACKGROUND: Unicoronal synostosis (UCS) results in nasal root deviation toward the fused side of the face, resulting in an apparent nasal dorsal deviation to the non-fused side. The impact of the altered radix position on the osteocartilaginous vault and nasal soft tissue has not been analyzed. The purpose of this study is to morphometrically assess the nasal structure and deviation in UCS. We hypothesize the proximal etiology exerts an impact on the distal nasal form, compared to controls. METHODS: Demographic data were tabulated and computed tomographic information recorded. Three-dimension

Relationship between anteroposterior cranial vault deformation and mandibular morphology in a pre-Columbian population.

INTRODUCTION: An externally applied force to the cranial vault has been reported to affect the growth of the facial skeleton. However, the effect on the mandible is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between anteroposterior cranial vault deformation and mandibular morphology. METHODS: The study sample included 44 women's crania with intact faces and bases that were excavated from archaeological sites in the Azapa Valley in northern Chile. The crania were divided into anteroposterior deformation (AP) and undeformed (U) groups according to frontal, parietal,

Deformational brachycephaly in supine-sleeping infants.

OBJECTIVES: Medical dictionaries and anthropologic sources define brachycephaly as a cranial index (CI = width divided by length x 100%) greater than 81%. We examine the impact of supine sleeping on CI and compare orthotic treatment with repositioning. STUDY DESIGN: We compared the effect of repositioning versus helmet therapy on CI in 193 infants referred for abnormal head shape. RESULTS: Eighty percent of the infants had a pretreatment CI > 81%. Their initial mean CI at mean age 5.3 months was 89%, and after treatment, their mean CI was 87% (+/-2 SE = 0.9%) at mean age 9.0 months. For 92 i

Long-Term Results After Head Orthosis Therapy for Early Childhood Position-Related Cranial Deformities: Stability of Treatment Outcome and Parental Satisfaction.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether different types of position-related cranial deformities show changes after completion of head orthosis therapy. We investigated how children's age at the begin of molding helmet therapy affects the duration and long-term stability of treatment. In addition, parental satisfaction with helmet therapy has been investigated.Between 2012 and 2019, 47 patients have been analyzed after undergoing helmet therapy. At the beginning of treatment different disease pattern were classified. Posterior deformational Plagiocephalus defined by a cranial vault i

Further delineation of SET-related intellectual disability syndrome.

A loss-of-function mutation of SET causes nonsyndromic intellectual disability, often associated with mild facial dysmorphic features, including plagiocephaly, facial asymmetry, broad and high forehead, a wide mouth, and a prominent mandible. We report a male individual with a 2.0 Mb deletion within 9q34.11, involving SET and SPTAN1, but not STXBP1. Among the genes with a high probability of being loss-of-function intolerant in the deletion interval, only SPTAN1 and SET had haploinsufficiency score (%HI) <10, indicating a high likelihood of haploinsufficiency. Pathogenic variants in SPTAN1 are…
