Assessing lethal and sublethal effects of pesticides on honey bees in a multifactorial context.

The registration of novel pesticides that are subsequently banned because of their unexpected negative effects on non-target species can hav … to a multifactorial, comprehensive approach. This is something of the utmost importance to preserve pollination, thus contributing to the sustainability of our food production system.

Volatile metabolome and floral transcriptome analyses reveal the volatile components of strongly fragrant progeny of Malus × robusta.

Floral fragrance is an important trait that contributes to the ornamental properties and pollination of crabapple. However, research on the physiological and molecular biology of the floral volatile compounds of crabapple is rarely reported. In this study, metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of the floral volatile compounds of standard Malus robusta flowers (Mr), and progeny with strongly and weakly fragrant flowers (SF and WF, respectively), were conducted. Fifty-six floral volatile compounds were detected in the plant materials, mainly comprising phenylpropane/benzene ring-type compounds…

Effects of pesticide-adjuvant combinations used in almond orchards on olfactory responses to social signals in honey bees (Apis mellifera).

Exposure to agrochemical sprays containing pesticides and tank-mix adjuvants has been implicated in post-bloom mortality, particularly of brood, in honey bee colonies brought into California almond orchards for pollination. Although adjuvants are generally considered to be biologically inert, some adjuvants have exhibited toxicity and sublethal effects, including decreasing survival rates of next-generation queens. Honey bees have a highly developed olfactory system to detect and discriminate among social signals. To investigate the impact of pesticide-adjuvant combinations on honey bee signal…

Comprehensive Analysis of Boron-Induced Changes in Cell Expansion and Phytohormone During Early Ovary Development in Pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis Yu).

Boron exerts regulatory control over various aspects of plant growth and morphogenesis, and the application of boron prior to anthesis has b … rse diameters. Histological analysis revealed pronounced cell expansion at 5, 10, and 15 days after pollination (DAP) following boron treatment. Furthermore, gibberellin and trans-zeatin concentrations at 5 and 10 DAP were significantly elevated, while the concentrations of abscisic acid and auxin were markedly reduced. Multidimensional Profiling of Senescence in Eastern Honey Bee, Apis cerana (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Workers: Morphology, Microstructure, and Transcriptomics.

Worker honey bees are crucial for colony stability and ecosystem pollination. However, the cross-scale aging features and underlying mechanisms in the Eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated age-related changes in A. cerana workers across youth (1~5 days post-emergence, dpe), middle age (29 dpe), and old age (50 dpe) through integrated morphological, ultrastructural, and transcriptomic analyses. With increasing age, the phenotypic deterioration in the old bees (OBs) was significant: the body color brightness decreased by 16.7% compared t…

Effectiveness of Different Soft Acaricides against Honey Bee Ectoparasitic Mite Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae).

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are essential for their products-honey, royal jelly, pollen, propolis and beeswax. They are also indispensable because they support ecosystems with their pollination services. However, the production and functions of honey bees are hindered by the arthropod pest Varroa destructor, which attacks bees through its feeding activities. Efforts to control varroa mites have been made through the development of various synthetic pesticide groups, but have had limited success because the mites developed resistance and some of these pesticides are harmful to bees. Branded pes…

LLG2/3 Are Co-receptors in BUPS/ANX-RALF Signaling to Regulate Arabidopsis Pollen Tube Integrity.

In angiosperms, two sperm cells are transported and delivered by the pollen tube to the ovule to achieve double fertilization. Extensive com … llg3 double mutants exhibit severe fertility defects. Mutant pollen tubes rupture early during the pollination process. Furthermore, LLG2 and LLG3 interact with ectodomains of both BUPSs and ANXURs, and this interaction is remarkably enhanced by the presence of RALF4/19 peptides. We further demonstrate that the N terminus (including a YISY motif) of the RALF …

The effect of ULV-based mosquito control on target and non-target organisms in Hungary: An experimental field study.

Ultra-low volume (ULV) insecticide spraying with deltamethrin as the active ingredient is widely used in mosquito control programs, yet its effectiveness against target mosquitoes and its ecological side effects remain poorly quantified under field conditions in Central Europe. Here, we experimentally evaluated the short-term impact of ground ULV spraying (using deltamethrin + Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium extract) on both mosquito populations and non-target flying insects in Hungary using a paired before-after-control-impact (BACI) design. Mosquitoes were sampled with BG Sentinel traps, whil

A Critical Review of Imidacloprid Remediation Technologies for Sustainable Environmental Management.

Imidacloprid (IMI), one of the most extensively used neonicotinoid insecticides, has become a widespread environmental contaminant owing to its high water solubility, persistence, and intensive agricultural applications. Its frequent detection in soil and aquatic environments has raised growing concerns because of its adverse effects on pollinators, aquatic organisms, wildlife, and potential risks to human health. Although numerous remediation technologies have been developed, existing reviews largely focus on individual treatment approaches and provide limited comparative evaluation of their

The sugar oxidation cascade: convergent metabolic strategies in hovering vertebrate nectarivores.

The smallest flying vertebrate pollinators, including hummingbirds and nectar bats, exist at an energetic extreme. Nectarivores must balance the need for high rates of metabolic power output to sustain comparatively high costs of thermoregulation and the intense energetic demands of forward and hovering flight with the constraint against building and carrying large, heavy energy stores. Work over the past half century has quantified metabolic rate and daily energy requirements for these animals and revealed that hummingbirds and nectar bats achieve energy homeostasis through exceptional physio

Assessing irradiation on honey bees in contaminated areas around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant: A life cycle approach to external and internal dose reconstruction.

This study aimed to determine the total dose rate received by honey bees, Apis mellifera, in an environment mainly contaminated by cesium-137: the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) area. Hives were installed from April to July 2024 on six sites chosen to obtain a gradient of air-dose rate (control, low and high dose rates). For the external dose assessment, dosimeters were placed on hives to assess the cumulative dose received over the study period. Other dosimeters were attached to foragers. On-board dosimetry provided significantly higher values than those recorded for the respec

First direct quantification of floral handling costs in bees.

Floral handling can be energetically costly for bees, yet these costs are rarely measured. We provide the first direct quantification of the metabolic cost of floral buzzing in bumblebees and evaluate its ecological significance. Using flow-through respirometry synchronized with laser vibrometry, we measured carbon dioxide production during floral buzzing by Bombus terrestris and compared it with flight take-off, which is powered by the same thoracic muscles. Floral buzzing required high muscular effort compared with other behaviours, with approximately 0.10 J per event and mass-specific power

Evolution of the α-Glucosidase Gene Family in Apoidea.

With more than 20,000 recognized species, the Apoidea is one of the most significant groups of pollinating insects, and their living environment is complex and diverse. The composition of nectar-producing plants for Apoidea varies across different geographical regions, prompting this group to evolve a variety of adaptive traits at the morphological and physiological levels to enhance their survival. The adaptive evolution of digestive enzymes is crucial for efficient nutrient absorption in Apoidea; however, the molecular basis underlying the diversification of bee digestive enzymes remains unc

Weeding out variability: a proof-of-concept for producing uniform F1 hybrid Cannabis sativa L. using single-seed descent.

Cannabis sativa is a wind-pollinated, predominantly dioecious, and outcrossing crop associated with high levels of genetic variability even within a single cultivar. As such, seed-grown crops are often constrained by variability issues, decreasing production efficiency and product consistency. F1 hybrid seed technology offers great potential to address these limitations by generating genetically uniform populations from a cross of two inbred parental lines. In C. sativa, single-seed descent (SSD) is currently the most viable method to produce these homozygous parental lines necessary for F1 hy

Transitions in reproductive traits accompany biome shifts in New Zealand species of the plant genus Veronica.

Evolutionary transitions between contrasting trait values likely occur in response to selection in new or changing environments, and these trait changes may be particularly large when a lineage shifts to occupy a completely new habitat or biome. Biome shifts can have major effects on the evolution of the species involved, including anagenetic changes in morphology, physiology, or life history and accelerated cladogenesis and diversification. Biome shifts can also be viewed as movements beyond a range margin. These shifts involve overcoming the physiological barriers that previously limited est
