[Chronic undernourishment in school-aged children: itineraries of nutritional neglect and official programs in indigenous communities of Guerrero, Mexico].

Through the analysis of different elements of the nutritional dynamics in a predominantly indigenous municipality in Guerrero, Mexico, we explore the relevance of the concept of itineraries of nutritional neglect in order to broaden the understanding of avoidable health damage. In the framework of a process of accompaniment of the Health Commission of the Regional Coordination of Community Authorities - Community Police, the following methodological strategies were applied throughout the year 2015: a) a review of official programs by means of the analysis of technical documents and interviews

Eradicating successfully yaws from India: The strategy & global lessons.

Yaws, a non-venereal treponematosis, affecting primarily the tribal populations, has been considered historically as one of the most neglected tropical diseases in the world. In 1996, India piloted an initiative to eradicate yaws based on a strategy consisting of active case finding through house-to-house search and treatment of cases and their contacts with long acting penicillin. Thereafter, the campaign implemented in all 51 endemic districts in 10 states of the country led to the achievement of a yaws-free status in 2004. In the post-elimination phase, surveillance activities accompanied b

[Bacteriological aspects of traumatisms caused by animals (author's transl)].

Bacterial complications of traumatisms caused by animals are very frequent if no proper therapy is applied. Germs detected in the wounds caused by cold-blood animals or by invertebrates are mostly represented by bacterias of telluric origin (responsible of gas gangrene, tetanus...) with the eventual worsening effect of venom. Germs detected in the wound caused by warm-blood animals have their origin in the dental commensal flora in which anaerobic germs prevail. Pasteurellosises are specially feared after animal bites but human bites too must not be neglected. Therapy first target must be the

Ethno-medicinal uses and cultural importance of stingless bees and their hive products in several ethnic communities of Bhutan.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous and non-indigenous people in subtropical and temperate areas of Bhutan share an intricate relationship with stingless bees for diverse purposes including ethno-medicinal uses. Stingless bees hold significant importance in the realms of social, economic, cultural, and spiritual aspects. Bhutan's cultural traditions demonstrate a strong bond with the environment, exemplified by the regular use of honey from stingless bees for remedies such as treating the common cold, cough, and sore throat. METHODS: Ethnographic research was conducted to document the ethno-medicinal uses

Anti-racist interventions to transform ecology, evolution and conservation biology departments.

Racial and ethnic discrimination persist in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, including ecology, evolution and conservation biology (EECB) and related disciplines. Marginalization and oppression as a result of institutional and structural racism continue to create barriers to inclusion for Black people, Indigenous people and people of colour (BIPOC), and remnants of historic racist policies and pseudoscientific theories continue to plague these fields. Many academic EECB departments seek concrete ways to improve the climate and implement anti-racist policies in their tea

Indigenous Genomic Databases: Pragmatic Considerations and Cultural Contexts.

The potential to grow genomic knowledge and harness the subsequent clinical benefits has escalated the building of background variant databases (BVDs) for genetic diagnosis across the globe. Alongside the upsurge of this precision medicine, potential benefits have been highlighted for both rare genetic conditions and other diagnoses. However, with the ever-present "genomic divide," Indigenous peoples globally have valid concerns as they endure comparatively greater health disparities but stand to benefit the least from these novel scientific discoveries and progress in healthcare. The paucity

GENETIC REGULATORY MECHANISMS AT THE POPULATION LEVEL IN MAN.

The distribution of the Rhesus and ABO blood groups, thalassemia, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Europe and in Jewish populations argues for a regulatory mechanism at the population level which adjusts gene frequencies so that the overall genetic load is not excessive, since gene frequencies giving a high genetic load at one locus are often associated with those giving low genetic loads at other loci.

Burden & pattern of illnesses among the tribal communities in central India : A report from a community health programme.

Tribals are the most marginalised social category in the country and there is little and scattered information on the actual burden and pattern of illnesses they suffer from. This study provides information on burden and pattern of diseases among tribals, and whether these can be linked to their nutritional status, especially in particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTG) seen at a community health programme being run in the tribal areas of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh States of India. This community based programme, known as Jan Swasthya Sahyog (JSS) has been serving people in over 2500 v

School partner perspectives on the implementation of the Your Voice Your View sexual assault prevention program for high school students.

Despite the high risk for sexual assault among adolescents, few sexual assault prevention programs designed for implementation in high schools have sustained rigorous evaluation. The present study sought to better understand the factors that influenced the implementation of Your Voice Your View (YVYV), a four-session sexual assault prevention program for 10th grade students, which includes a teacher "Lunch and Learn" training as well as a 4-week school-specific social norms poster campaign. Following program implementation, eight school partners (i.e., health teachers, guidance counselors, tea

Psychosocial challenges affecting patient-defined medication for opioid use disorder treatment outcomes in a low-income, underserved population: Application of the social-ecological framework.

INTRODUCTION: Successful engagement with medication treatment for opioid use disorder is an important focus in reducing mortality associated with the opioid crisis. Mortality remains at unacceptably high levels, pointing to a need for improved understanding of factors that affect medication for opioid use disorder outcomes. This study aims to understand how barriers co-occur and interact to interfere with outcomes in methadone treatment for a low-income, underserved patient population with opioid use disorder. METHODS: This study was conducted at a community-based drug treatment center that s

Disparities and outcomes of patients living with Down Syndrome undergoing healthcare transitions from pediatric to adult care: A scoping review.

Down Syndrome (DS) is one of the most common chromosomal disorders worldwide, and people with DS experience more co-morbidities and have poorer health outcomes compared to the general population. An area that is not well understood is how patients with DS transition from pediatric to adult care, as well as the details, barriers, and difficulties of these transitions for patients. Hence, we aimed to provide a scoping review of the literature in PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL on the topic of healthcare transitions (HCTs) for patients with DS. Findings suggest patients with DS who continued receiving

Rehabilitation Programs for Bedridden Patients with Prolonged Immobility: A Scoping Review Protocol.

Bedridden patients usually stay in bed for long periods, presenting several motor problems caused by immobility, such as reductions in muscle mass, bone mineral density and physical impairment, resulting in a long recovery process. Thus, identifying physical rehabilitation programs for bedridden patients with prolonged immobility is a matter of urgent research for a solution that will help health professionals and stakeholders to develop more adjusted programs and identify possible gaps. To date, no previous scoping reviews addressing this purpose have been found. This scoping review will be g
