City studies on nutrition: Bangalore, India.

The size of urban population in developing Asian countries grows at a faster rate than in the developed West. Urban cities in India are being crushed by the onslaught of population growth, migration of rural poor and industrialization, the urbanization in turn inducing social and economic changes. During the decade 1972-81, India's population grew by 25%, urban population by over 40% and that of Bangalore city by 76%. The 1991 Census records the population of Bangalore city at 4.1 million, though the decennial growth rate seems to have begun to decline. The current sex ratio is 900 females to …

Impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years: A global decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the burden of cancer is increasing. We aimed to assess the impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We used the decomposition method to estimate the impact of ageing, population growth, and epidemiological change on cancer-related DALYs from 1990 to 2019, stratified by 204 countries/territories and by their sociodemographic index (SDI). This approach separates the net effect of population ageing from population growth and change in age-specific DALY rates. RESULTS: Cancer-related DALYs among indi…

[Secular trend of growth in Blumenau, Santa Catarina State].

Secular trend of growth refers to any change of the corporal size in determined population group in long periods of time. The objective of this work is to study the secular tendency of growth in natural height among recruits in Blumenau, Santa Catarina State, between the years of 1963 and 2007. This is a transversal, retrospective and analytical study. Young recruits, aged 18 to 20 were chosen as the population. A standardized database was used on individual records with the first 40 records of each year being selected. Data from 1963 to 2007 were collected and separated per decades. A margin

Comparison of the predicted impact of a screwworm fly outbreak in Australia using a growth index model and a life-cycle model.

The spatial population dynamics of an Old World screwworm fly, Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve (OWS), outbreak in Australia have been modelled in two ways. The first model uses weekly growth indices derived from climatic data to predict the adult female population. The second is a detailed cohort life-cycle model. Due to technical and time constraints, the growth index model is preferred as the biological component of a much larger bioeconomic model because of its smaller program size and faster execution. In deciding whether adoption of the growth index model would be at the expense of scientif

Ethnicity-specific growth distributions for prediction of newborn morbidity.

OBJECTIVES: Birth weight distributions differ according to the ethnic origin of the mother. We aimed to determine whether using ethnicity-specific growth distributions would identify newborns at risk for adverse infant outcomes associated with small for gestational age (SGA) birth better than population-based distributions. METHODS: We examined 2647 singletons born to healthy non-smoking mothers at British Columbia Women's Hospital at 37 to 41 completed weeks' gestation. We compared the ability of ethnicity-specific growth distributions and population-based distributions to predict which infa

Inflammation Mediators Regulate the Microbiota Resistance to Adverse Factors.

We studied the effects of IL-1β, IL-8, TNFα, and prostaglandin E2α in concentrations typically observed in health and during inflammation on the growth of vaginal microbiota and its resistance to factors inhibiting the synthesis of proteins, nucleic acids, and peptidoglycans. An increase in the cytokine levels, characteristic of inflammation, inhibits the growth of Lactobacillus population and improves its resistance to adverse factors. The growth of the population of opportunistic microorganisms (S. aureus, E. coli) is stimulated under these conditions, while their resistance to adverse facto

Changes of mandibular ramal height, during growth in unilateral hemifacial microsomia patients and unaffected controls.

The aim of this study was to design mandibular ramal height growth curves for patients with HFM and compare those with the curves for a Dutch reference population. Two hundred fifty-one pre-operative orthopantomograms (OPTs) from 84 patients with unilateral HFM were used in conjunction with a control set of 2260 OPTs from 329 healthy individuals from the Nijmegen Growth Study (NGS) to determine mandibular ramal distances. For grades I/IIa and IIb/III, and for both sides, growth curves were constructed for mandibular ramal height with a linear curve-fitting procedure. This procedure revealed a

Maternal high-risk factors and severity of growth deficit in small for gestational age infants.

The relationship between maternal risk factors and severity of fetal growth deficit was evaluated in a population of 613 small for gestational age (SGA) infants and 784 appropriately grown controls. The severity of growth deficit among SGA infants was expressed as 'fetal growth ratio' (observed/expected birthweight, where expected birthweight is the mean birthweight of the Italian population for a given gestational age). In multivariate models, preeclampsia was the only maternal high-risk factor positively correlated with a more severe growth deficit among SGA infants. Chronic cardiac or renal

Height Growth Impairment in Children With Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Is Characterized by Decreased Pubertal Growth Velocity in Both Sexes.

Previous studies have suggested that children with neurofibromatosis type 1 are shorter than their unaffected counterparts as an effect of a germline NF1 gene mutation. The pathophysiology of this effect is still uncertain. The purpose of this study was to characterize longitudinal growth in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 in order to assess growth velocity and its influence on stature. Longitudinal height data were collected for 188 patients with a confirmed clinical diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1. Children with neurofibromatosis type 1 had population mean heights statistically

Nutrition of Infants with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia before and after Discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) represents a severe sequela in neonates born very prematurely. The provision of adequate nutritional support in this high-risk population is challenging. The development of the lungs and physical growth are closely linked together in infants with BPD. Growth deficiency has been associated with pulmonary dysfunction, whereas improvement in respiratory status results in growth acceleration. Currently, there is not enough data regarding optimal nutritional strategies in this population. Nutrition in these infants should provide sufficient calories and nutrients to

Evaluation of fetal growth by ultrasonography in twin pregnancy: a comparison between individual and cross-sectional growth curve standards.

Cross sectional curves and individual fetal growth curves standards from the Rossavik growth model [P = c(t)(k + s(t]] were generated for abdominal and head circumferences, femur diaphysis length and estimated fetal weight from a sample of 59 women with twin pregnancy. These curves were compared to their counterparts in singleton pregnancies. Cross sectional curves of the four fetal anatomic parameters under study fell progressively below the curves for singletons during the last trimester of gestation. In contrast, there were few differences between individual fetal groWth curve standards for

A Likelihood-Based Framework for Simultaneously Learning Both Noise and Growth Dynamics Using Biologically-Informed Neural Networks.

In recent years, neural ordinary differential equation frameworks such as Biologically-Informed Neural Networks (BINNs) have shown promise for learning mechanistic laws from sparse data. However, most existing approaches implicitly assume homoscedastic Gaussian noise, and therefore do not account for potentially meaningful structure in biological variability. Here, we present an extension to the existing BINNs framework that includes a learnable noise model, allowing discovery of the noise model directly from data. Using population growth as an example, we demonstrate that the framework accura…

One Medicine One Science: a framework for exploring challenges at the intersection of animals, humans, and the environment.

Characterizing the health consequences of interactions among animals, humans, and the environment in the face of climatic change, environmental disturbance, and expanding human populations is a critical global challenge in today's world. Exchange of interdisciplinary knowledge in basic and applied sciences and medicine that includes scientists, health professionals, key sponsors, and policy experts revealed that relevant case studies of monkeypox, influenza A, tuberculosis, and HIV can be used to guide strategies for anticipating and responding to new disease threats such as the Ebola and Chic

Intrauterine growth retardation.

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), which is defined as less than 10 percent of predicted fetal weight for gestational age, may result in significant fetal morbidity and mortality if not properly diagnosed. The condition is most commonly caused by inadequate maternal-fetal circulation, with a resultant decrease in fetal growth. Less common causes include intrauterine infections such as cytomegalovirus and rubella, and congenital anomalies such as trisomy 21 and trisomy 18. When IUGR is recognized, it is important to attempt to correct reversible causes, although many of the conditions resp
