[Choices at the end of life: opinion and attitude of health staff in comparison with the general population].

In an increasingly aging population, patients increasingly require palliative end-of-life care, given the increase in chronic and advanced organ diseases. Therefore, advance planning of the care they receive is essential, allowing patients, based on their principles and experiences, to freely and autonomously decide their preferences. The advantages of implementing this process include respecting patient autonomy; strengthening the relationship between doctor and patient; alleviating the burden that may fall on the family in decision-making at the end of their lives; improving satisfaction wit

The effects of HIV on bone and muscle health through the lifespan in populations living in Africa.

Africa is home to the majority of people with HIV (PWH) worldwide. Improved availability and access to antiretroviral treatment (ART) has improved survival, resulting in an ageing population now facing long-term HIV-associated morbidity, including musculoskeletal conditions. There is growing evidence on the impact of chronic HIV infection and ART on muscle and bone health. Musculoskeletal complications among PWH increase the risk of injury, disability, pain, reduces quality of life, and incurs substantive healthcare and economic costs. This review discusses mechanisms by which HIV may affect b

Screening for social determinants of health among populations at risk for MASLD: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) have been associated with disparate outcomes among those with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its risk factors. To address SDoH among this population, real-time SDoH screening in clinical settings is required, yet optimal screening methods are unclear. We performed a scoping review to describe the current literature on SDoH screening conducted in the clinical setting among individuals with MASLD and MASLD risk factors. METHODS: Through a systematic literature search of MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL Complete da

Addressing the commercial determinants of mental health: an umbrella review of population-level interventions.

There is increasing evidence that commercial determinants impact mental health. Addressing the commercial determinants may therefore be a way of improving population-level mental health. This umbrella review aimed to provide an overview of evidence in this field and identify knowledge gaps. Five databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus and Cochrane Library) were searched on the 18/19 of July 2022. Eligible papers were systematic reviews published after 31 December 2011. No geographical limits were applied. Eligible interventions were those that targeted the behaviours or products of commer

Health-related quality of life and clinical characteristics of hidradenitis suppurativa in a pediatric population.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, skin-immunemediated inflammatory disease (sIMID), with a high impact on quality of life (QoL). Data on clinical management, comorbidities, psychosocial burden, and psychiatric disorders in pediatric patients with HS are scarce. The aim of our study was to compare clinical characteristics and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adult and pediatric patients with HS. Data were collected on 601 patients with HS, 60 of whom (10.0%) were pediatric. The psychological and HRQoL impact was generally higher i

Prevalence and clinical significance of anti-SSA antibody in the Chinese health screening population.

Anti-Sjögren's syndrome type A (anti-SSA) antibodies are non-organ-specific autoantibodies highly prevalent in various autoimmune diseases. This study primarily investigated the prevalence of anti-SSA antibodies in the health screening population. Additionally, we explored the clinical features of the anti-SSA antibody-positive population and evaluated the development of connective tissue diseases (CTD) over the years in individuals with anti-SSA antibodies for whom follow-up was available. A total of, 64 045 individuals without a history of CTD from 2013 to 2022 who visited Peking Union Medic

Mental health for the indigenous population in Chhattisgarh, India: Navigating challenges and crafting solutions.

INTRODUCTION: The ST population, residing in isolated, underdeveloped areas, faces significant health disparities compared to non-tribal communities. In particular, the lack of mental health infrastructure in these regions exacerbates their health challenges. Tribal communities possess distinct cultural beliefs surrounding health and illness, yet scant information exists regarding their physical and mental well-being. In addition, limited access to mental health services prevails, and many tribal individuals opt for traditional healing methods. METHODOLOGY: This study is part of the "Tele-men

The use of panoramic radiographs to address the oral health needs of vulnerable Canadian populations.

BACKGROUND: The high demand for oral health care services among vulnerable individuals combined with limited available resources requires a rethinking of the provision of oral health services. This study aimed to determine the usefulness of the dental panoramic radiograph (DPR) as an imaging tool to assess oral health and prioritize dental interventions in vulnerable patients. METHODS: This observational and retrospective study evaluated charts of patients who attended Public Health Dental Clinics (PHDC), Alberta Health Services (AHS), in Calgary, Canada, between January 2018 and December 201

Comparison of Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of MAFLD and NAFLD in Chinese Health Examination Populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The recently proposed concept of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has remained controversial. We aimed to describe the features and associated outcomes to examine the diagnostic ability of MAFLD for identifying high-risk individuals. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled 72,392 Chinese participants between 2014 and 2015. Participants were classified as MAFLD, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-MAFLD-NAFLD, and a normal control group. The primary outcomes were liver-related and cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. P

One health approach to toxocariasis in Brazilian indigenous populations, their dogs, and soil contamination.

INTRODUCTION: Although socioeconomic vulnerability and lifestyle factors may contribute to the transmission of Toxocara spp., no study has investigated indigenous populations in Brazil using the One Health approach. METHODS: Accordingly, this study assessed anti-Toxocara spp. antibodies in Brazilian indigenous people and healthcare professionals by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Presence of Toxocara spp. eggs (feces and hair) in dogs as definitive hosts and in soil samples of the indigenous communities were also recovered and molecularly investigated. RESULTS: Overall, 342/463 (73.9%) in

Nutritional patterns as machine learning predictors of liver health in a population of elderly subjects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis affects 25% of adults worldwide and its prevalence increases with age. There is currently no definitive treatment for NAFLD but international guidelines recommend a lifestyle-based approach, including a healthy diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between eating habits and the risk of steatosis and/or hepatic fibrosis, using a machine learning approach, in a non-institutionalized elderly population. METHODS AND RESULTS: We recruited 1929 subjects, mean age 74 years, from the population-based Salus in Apulia Study.

Emotional Distress in a Marginalized Population as a Function of Household-Level Social Determinants of Health.

Low-income, underrepresented communities of color are disproportionally affected by emotional distress. Little is known about malleable, household-level determinants of emotional distress, addressable by feasible, stigma-neutral interventions. The present study addressed this knowledge gap by analyzing secondary data from a cross-sectional community needs assessment survey in a marginalized urban community (N = 677). Relying on dominance analyses, authors found that, on average, the largest household-level contributions to respondents' emotional distress included exposures to fellow household
