Health-Related Quality of Life After Neonatal Treatment of Symptomatic Tetralogy of Fallot: Insights from the Congenital Cardiac Research Collaborative.

To evaluate the association between initial management strategy of neonatal symptomatic Tetralogy of Fallot (sTOF) and later health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes. We performed a multicenter, cross-sectional evaluation of a previously assembled cohort of infants with sTOF who underwent initial intervention at ≤ 30 days of age, between 2005 and 2017. Eligible patients' parents/guardians completed an age-appropriate Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, a Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Cardiac Module Heart Disease Symptoms Scale, and a parental survey. The association between treat

Lessons about Causes and Management of an Ebola Outbreak.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is one of the deadliest viral diseases. It is characterized by a high mortality rate due to the lack of effective and safe treatments or vaccines and its ability to spread at an unstoppable pace. The West Africa outbreak ended but the disease may strike again at any time. The latest epidemic was, by far, the deadliest to date. The most concern was why this outbreak was so different from the previous ones. We proposed in this review firstly to summarize the principal causes of its unprecedented spread and secondly to identify the steps for an effective management appro

Online tailored weight management in the worksite: does it make a difference in biennial health risk assessment data?

Overweight and obesity are directly associated with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes and pose a serious cost-related challenge to employers. As most of the rise in health care spending is traced to the rise in population risk factors, maintaining or reducing the prevalence of disease represents a strategy with large potential payoffs. Tailored communication is a promising communication strategy for influencing health behavior change, including behaviors for weight management. Much of the tailored communication research is based on communication developed for research purposes, yet access to

Pain Management in the Older Adult with Opioid Use Disorder.

Increasing prevalence of addiction poses challenges to pain management in older adults, a population already facing high rates of chronic pain and medical and psychosocial complexity. Little guidance exists on the management of pain in older adults with opioid misuse and opioid use disorder, in whom heightened pain sensitivity, comorbid mental health disorders, and potential harms from prescribed analgesic medications complicate treatment. This article will explore diagnostic and treatment strategies for older adults with opioid misuse and opioid use disorder, with special attention to the use

Management of inflammatory rheumatic conditions in the elderly.

The number of elderly people with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases is increasing. This heterogeneous and comorbid population is at particular risk of cardiovascular, neoplastic, infectious and iatrogenic complications. The development of biotherapies has paved the way for innovative therapeutic strategies, which are associated with toxicities. In this review, we have focused on the scientific and therapeutic changes impacting the management of elderly patients affected by RA, SpA or PsA. A multidimensional health assessment resulting in an integrated therapeutic strategy was identified

Health status of women affected by homelessness: A cluster of in concreto human rights violations and a time for action.

Health problems of women experiencing homelessness are driven either from the usual background characteristics of this population, or from the homeless lifestyle. Apart from poverty and unemployment, transition to homelessness is often associated with substance abuse, history of victimization, stress, poor mental health and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Water insecurity can undermine bodily hygiene and dental health, posing a greater risk of dehydration and opportunistic infections. Exposure to extreme environmental conditions like heat waves and natural disasters increases morbidity, ac

Global burden of sleep-disordered breathing and its implications.

One-seventh of the world's adult population, or approximately one billion people, are estimated to have OSA. Over the past four decades, obesity, the main risk factor for OSA, has risen in striking proportion worldwide. In the past 5 years, the WHO estimates global obesity to affect almost two billion adults. A second major risk factor for OSA is advanced age. As the prevalence of the ageing population and obesity increases, the vulnerability towards having OSA increases. In addition to these traditional OSA risk factors, studies of the global population reveal select contributing features and

Guidelines on Diabetic Eye Care: The International Council of Ophthalmology Recommendations for Screening, Follow-up, Referral, and Treatment Based on Resource Settings.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global epidemic and affects populations in both developing and developed countries, with differing health care and resource levels. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major complication of DM and a leading cause of vision loss in working middle-aged adults. Vision loss from DR can be prevented with broad-level public health strategies, but these need to be tailored to a country's and population's resource setting. Designing DR screening programs, with appropriate and timely referral to facilities with trained eye care professionals, and using cost-effective treatment fo

The use of AI in epilepsy and its applications for people with intellectual disabilities: commentary.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting more than 50 million people worldwide. Management is particularly complex in individuals with intellectual disabilities, who are at a much higher risk of having severe seizures compared to the general population. People with intellectual disabilities are regularly excluded from epilepsy research, despite having significantly higher risks of negative health outcomes and early mortality. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have shown great potential in improving the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of epilepsy.

Strategies for the prevention and control of osteoporosis in developing countries.

The frequency of osteoporosis and fragility fractures has been studied to a very limited extent in few developing countries. The aim of this paper is to review briefly the burden of osteoporosis and fragility fractures in these countries and to propose some strategies for the prevention and control of those conditions, considering barriers and facilitators for their implementation. The evolution of the demographic composition in most regions with developing countries shows a considerable increase in life expectancy and therefore, a significant growth in elderly population can be expected.
