Postural control in patients with total hip replacement.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the balance of the standing position and the motor responses by means of dynamic posturography (DP) in patients affected by hip osteoarthritis and treated by total hip replacement (THR). METHODS: Data obtained from THR patients were compared with those of control adult groups ofage-matched subjects with normal hearing and no history of audio-vestibular symptoms. The statistical tests used were paired and unpaired Student's t-test. Significance was set for P<0.05. The study was carried out at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Department of

Fear of heights: cognitive performance and postural control.

INTRODUCTION: Fear of heights, or acrophobia, is one of the most frequent subtypes of specific phobia frequently associated to depression an … n both tasks, especially when carried out simultaneously. Previously described interference between posture control and cognitive activity seems to play a major role in these individuals. DISCUSSION: The presence of physiologic abnormalities is compatible with the hypothesis of a non-associative acquisition of fear of heights, i.e., not associated to pre …

Blood volume perturbations in the postural tachycardia syndrome.

The postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is characterized by excessive orthostatic tachycardia with chronic symptoms that are associated with upright posture. These chronic symptoms (of at least 6 months' duration) include tachycardia, exercise intolerance, lightheadedness, extreme fatigue, headache, and mental clouding. Patients with POTS demonstrate an increase in heart rate of at least 30 beats/min within 5 to 30 minutes of assuming an upright posture, in the absence of orthostatic hypotension (a fall in blood pressure >20/10 mm Hg) and in the absence of other medical disorders that might c…

Postural control anomalies in children with Tourette syndrome.

The goal of the present study was to determine whether postural control is affected in Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome (TS). Center of pressure (COP) displacements were recorded in children with TS and unaffected siblings in three conditions using a force platform: (1) Eyes-Open, (2) Eyes-Closed, (3) One-Leg standing with eyes open. The COP range and velocity were higher in children with TS than in unaffected siblings in all conditions. These differences could not be attributed to age, present tic severity, comorbidities (hyperactivity and compulsions) or medication. The data suggest that sub-c

Postural control in dyslexic and non-dyslexic children.

Postural control relies to visual-motion processing (afferent or efferent) and this is thought to be deficient in dyslexics. There is a controversy between clinic and fundamental studies as to the presence of posture abnormalities in dyslexics. To explore further this issue, this study examines posture stability in quite stance in 13 dyslexics (mean age: 13.5 years) and in 13 non-dyslexics (mean age: 13 years). Experiment 1 shows that, similarly to adults and elderly, all children (dyslexics and non-dyslexics), present better stability at near distance (i.e. smaller surface area of the COP, sm…

Brain regions and genes affecting postural control.

Postural control is integrated in all facets of motor commands. The role of cortico-subcortical pathways underlying postural control, including cerebellum and its afferents (climbing, mossy, and noradrenergic fibers), basal ganglia, motor thalamus, and parieto-frontal neocortex has been identified in animal models, notably through the brain lesion technique in rats and in mice with spontaneous and induced mutations. These studies are complemented by analyses of the factors underlying postural deficiencies in patients with cerebellar atrophy. With the gene deletion technique in mice, specific g

Assessment of postural instability in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Postural instability is one of the most disabling features of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we focused on postural ins … n of the UPDRS. A forward shift of a mean COP position in parkinsonians which reflects their flexed posture was also significantly greater to compare with the elderly subjects and exhibited a high sensitivity to visual conditions. Both groups of postural sway abnormalities identified here may be used as accessible and reliable measures which allow for qua …

Hormone therapy and postural balance in elderly women.

OBJECTIVE: Most fractures occur in elderly individuals without osteoporosis, and more than 90% of all hip fractures are associated with a fall. It is unclear whether hormone therapy (HT) can improve postural balance when initiated in elderly women and the effect of endogenous estradiol (E2) levels. DESIGN: Forty healthy women (33 assessable), age 60 years or older, were recruited through advertising in the local media. They were randomly and blindly assigned to receive either estradiol patches (50 microg/24 h) combined with oral medroxyprogesterone acetate (2.5 mg/d) or placebo for 6 months.

Static postural control in children with developmental dyslexia.

The present investigation tries to better understand potential association and causal relationship between phonological and postural impairment due to developmental dyslexia. The study included 50 boys with developmental dyslexia and selected on the basis of their overall reading difficulties, and 42 control boys. Body sway during a quite standing posture eye open and eye closed on a force platform were tested in the two groups of subjects that were between 10 and 13 years of age. Analysis of classical parameters quantifying the centre of pressure (CP) displacements along antero-posterior and …

Modeling postural instability with Galvanic vestibular stimulation.

In this study the effect of a pseudorandom binaural bipolar Galvanic stimulus generated by a sum of nonharmonically related sine waves on postural control was functionally assessed using computerized dynamic posturography (CDP), and the results compared to vestibulopathic patient populations and astronauts exposed to microgravity. The standardized CDP test battery comprised six sensory organization tests (SOTs) that combined three visual conditions (eyes open, eyes closed, and sway-referenced vision) with two proprioceptive conditions (fixed and sway-referenced support surfaces). Subjects (12)

Visually induced postural sway in anxiety disorders.

Postural sensitivity to moving visual environments in patients with anxiety disorders was studied. We hypothesized that patients with anxiety disorders would have greater sway in response to a moving visual environment compared to healthy adults, especially if they have space and motion discomfort (SMD). Twenty-one patients with generalized anxiety without panic (NPA) and 38 patients with panic and agoraphobia (PAG) were compared to 22 healthy controls. SMD was evaluated in all subjects via questionnaire. Subjects stood on a force platform that was either fixed or rotating with the subject (i.

Improvement of postural control in patients with peripheral vestibulopathy.

We present here the results of a short-term prospective study on a group of 37 patients with persistent unsteadiness. The treatment of these patients was customized according to the results of the Sensory Organization Test carried out using computerized dynamic posturography. A 5-week period of instrumental rehabilitation was established involving visual biofeedback-based computerized balance intervention that manipulated the individuals' capacities, the goals of the tasks and the environmental context. Exercises were performed twice weekly. This adaptation of the treatment was based on the hy

Postural control in persons with late effects of polio.

BACKGROUND: Persons who have suffered from acute poliomyelitis may decades later experience reduction of balance and gait capacity due to muscle weakness, fatigue and/or pain. This may affect the activity level in daily life of these persons. AIMS OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to describe observer assessed and subjectively perceived postural control in persons with late effects of polio and to evaluate the correlation between postural control and gait velocity for this population. METHOD: 50 persons (mean age 59.8 yrs) with diagnosed polio disease and without other causes of mobili

Effects of immersion in virtual reality on postural control.

In the present study, we examined the effects of the time lag between visual scene and the head movement in the virtual reality (VR) world on motion sickness and postural control in healthy volunteers. After immersion in VR with additional time lags (from 0 to 0.8 s) to the inherent delay (about 250 ms), the visual-vestibular conflict induced a slight motion sickness in experimental subjects, but no change was noticed in the body sway path with eyes open and closed. However, Romberg ratio of body sway path with eyes closed divided by that with eyes open after immersion in VR was significantly

Postural stability after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

Factors related to postural stability and the course of recovery after vestibular schwannoma surgery were analyzed in a retrospective study of 177 patients and in a prospective study of 44 patients. Before surgery, 7 of the 44 patients in the prospective group complained of postural instability. The body sway velocity was measured. In the retrospective study, the sway velocity was abnormal under nonvisual control in 63% of the patients and under visual control in 34%. The sway velocity correlated with tumor size, smooth pursuit deficit, and postoperative work history. We compared patients with
