BACKGROUND: Multiple studies associate low vitamin D levels with cancer morbidity and mortality. However, few studies have measured vitamin D in pediatric patients with malignancy. Our aim was to assess vitamin D status in a large cohort of pediatric patients with cancer and to define risk factors for deficiency.
METHODS: Circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels were measured in 211 patients. Calcium intake and sun exposure habits were assessed in 142 patients (age 12.1 ± 5.8 y; number of male patients, 69; mean time from diagnosis, 4.4 ± 3.8 y).

The leukemias and lymphomas together account for over 40% of the malignant disorders in childhood. Radiologists who deal with these patients must understand some aspects of the biology, natural history, and clinical manifestations of the disease in order to provide useful imaging consultative services. This article summarizes these issues briefly, gives an overview of the common imaging appearances, and recommends imaging studies to be utilized in the initial staging evaluation of newly presenting patients.

This study assessed the relapse characteristics and prognosis of 145 children newly diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). The overall complete response (CR) rate was 91.7% (133/145), and the overall recurrence rate was 31.6% (42/133).
