An AFM Approach Applied in a Study of α-Crystallin Membrane Association: New Insights into Lens Hardening and Presbyopia Development.

The lens of the eye loses elasticity with age, while α-crystallin association with the lens membrane increases with age. It is unclear wheth … ane elasticity, providing new insights into understanding the molecular basis of lens hardening and presbyopia.

Normative patterns and factors associated with presbyopia progression in a multiethnic Asian population: the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To investigate normative patterns and factors associated with presbyopia progression in a multiethnic Asian population. METHODS: Malay, Indian and Chinese participants aged 40-80 years who had baseline and 6-year follow-up examinations with subjective refraction data were recruited from the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases Study. Presbyopia progression was defined as an increase in near addition power of ≥+0.50 dioptre (D) from baseline to follow-up visit. Modified Poisson regression analyses were used to determine baseline factors associated with presbyopia progression.…

Suppression of presbyopia progression with pirenoxine eye drops: experiments on rats and non-blinded, randomized clinical trial of efficacy.

Various methods can correct presbyopia, but all require devices or surgeries. Recently, supplements or warming devices to relieve presbyopic symptoms have been developed, but no eye drops have been developed. We screened certain compounds possibly related to lens degeneration and identified pirenoxine, which has been used for cataracts, as a possible new pharmacologic treatment for presbyopia. We first researched the anti-presbyopic activity of pirenoxine in rats. The lens elasticity significantly (p = 0.028) increased with exposure to tobacco smoke for 12 days, and pirenoxine eye drops signif…

Intraocular lens multifocality combined with the compensation for corneal spherical aberration: a new concept of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens.

The outcomes of a prospective consecutive study aimed at evaluating the visual and refractive benefit after cataract surgery with the implan … ation of the far and near visual function after phacoemulsification surgery for cataract removal or presbyopia correction, which is predictable and independent from the optical power of the implanted IOL.

An objective and subjective comparative analysis of diffractive and front surface aspheric contact lens designs used to correct presbyopia.

As bifocal contact lenses have evolved, increasing emphasis has been placed on producing designs that are less dependent on such variables as pupil size and lens centration and movement. We evaluated these and other variables in 25 presbyopic patients who underwent consecutive 1-week trials, wearing two different contact lens types: a diffractive lens and a front surface aspheric lens. Distance and near visual acuities were not significantly reduced by either lens type, and both exhibited binocular summation. With each lens design, visual acuity remained relatively independent of pupil size an

Real-Time Control of a Focus Tunable Lens for Presbyopia Correction Using Ciliary Muscle Biopotentials and Artificial Neural Networks.

Ageing results in the progressive loss of near vision, known as presbyopia, which impacts individuals and society. Existing corrective methods offer only partial compensation and do not restore dynamic focusing at varying distances. This work presents a closed-loop correction system for presbyopia, employing biopotential signals from the ciliary muscle and an artificial neural network to predict the eye's accommodative state in real time. Non-invasive contact lens electrodes collect biopotential data, which are preprocessed and classified using a multi-layer perceptron. The classifier output g…

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics of pilocarpine hydrochloride 1.25% (Pilo hereafter) compared with vehicle when administered bilaterally, twice daily (6 hours apart) for 14 days in participants with presbyopia. DESIGN: Phase 3, randomized (1:1), controlled, double-masked, multicenter study. METHODS: Participants (40-55 years of age) had objective and subjective evidence of presbyopia affecting daily activities with mesopic, high-contrast, binocular distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA) of 20/40 to 20/100. Spectacle independence and subjective satisfaction of ReSTOR multifocal intraocular lens after cataract or presbyopia surgery in two European countries.

PURPOSE: To determine the percentage of patients implanted bilaterally with ReSTOR((R)) requiring spectacles at 18 months, the patient satisfaction, and factors that predict spectacles independence. METHODS: The medical and surgical data were collected from patient records. The 'Freedom from Spectacles Value Scale' (FGVS) was used to rank their experiences via telephone interview. A Bayesian network was used to predict postoperative spectacles use. RESULTS: 304 patients (65.6 years) were included. Postoperative visual acuity was >/=0.8 in 93.3% of patients for near vision and in 88.6% of pat

PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical outcomes after implantation of new presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (IOL): Artis Symbiose® (Cristalens Industrie, France). SETTING: Tertiary referral center, Brest, France. DESIGN: Non-comparative prospective interventional study. METHODS: Patients undergoing bilateral IOL implantation were included. [Study of the Mechanisms of Maintaining the Transparency of the Lens and Treatment of Its Related Diseases for Making Anti-cataract and/or Anti-presbyopia Drugs].

The lens of the eye is an avascular and anuclear tissue that serves to focus objects on the retina. Cataract is opacity within the clear lens that changes the transparency and refractive index of the lens causing significant visual impairments. These impairments can severely restrict the ability to carry out daily activities. Cataracts is common among elderly person occurring in more than 80% of patients aged 80 or older. Notably, we have recently identified key compounds that are effective against cataract formation. Presbyopia is also an ocular disease that typically develops in people over …
