Eighty-three patients with retinal pigment epitheliopathy have been identified from the photographic and fluorescein records of the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow. Many have been brought back for follow-up assessment. Thirty-two patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage of unknown etiology were followed for periods from 1 to 6 1/2 years. Two more patients had normal initial angiograms, but were excluded when repeat angiography revealed an aneurysm. The mortality rate in this series was 6%. Renal prognosis cannot be easily predicted in females with hereditary nephritis (HN). Thirty-six women with persistent urinary abnormalities, belonging to 24 families with progressive HN, were studied. Renal biopsy specimens were available in 23 patients and were studied by light and electron microscopy (EM). Nine women (group I) progressed to early renal failure, at 35 yrs of age or less. Twenty three sporadic cases of Reye's syndrome diagnosed according to widely accepted criteria were seen between 1979 and 1982. The patients were younger than those reported from North America (median age 9 months), girls were twice as common as boys, and the syndrome presented twice as frequently in the summer 6 months. Medical and surgical advances have improved the outlook for infants with symptomatic coarctation of the aorta. To help predict the clinical course of individual patients and to aid in individualizing their treatment, a 10-year experience with this condition was reviewed. Of 97 infants with symptomatic coarctation, 10 had isolated defects. In these patients, medical treatment was successful and surgical intervention could be postponed to allow for growth. Between 1972 and 1981 40 victims of near-drowning were admitted to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Hospital records were reviewed with regard to: 1) the circumstances of submersion and rescue; 2) the patient's condition upon arrival at the emergency room; 3) treatment, hospital course, and ultimate outcome. A new method or early prognostication of Perthes' disease is presented. It is based entirely on radiological assessment and was developed from a review of 69 radiologic examinations performed during the first year of the disease in 27 patients with unilateral Perthes' disease. A simple mathematical function was constructed with the aid of discriminant analysis of four parameters, viz the metaphyseal width of the femur, the position of the femoral head in relation to the acetabulum, and the acetabular height and breadth.
