Psychometric properties of the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS) in alcohol-dependent patients.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is found in patients with substance use disorders (SUDs). In the few existing studies, mixed results regarding the psychometric properties of common screening instruments for PTSD have been reported for patients with SUDs. No results are available for the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS), an established self-report measure for PTSD. METHODS: The authors assessed 105 patients with alcohol dependence according to DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition) (70% male) 2 weeks aft

Testing the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the level of expressed emotion scale.

This study tested the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the level of expressed emotion scale in Hong Kong Chinese patients with severe mental illness and their family caregivers. First, the semantic equivalence with the original English version and test-retest reliability at 2-week interval of the Chinese version was examined. After that, the reproducibility, construct validity, and internal consistency of the Chinese version were tested. The Chinese version indicated good semantic equivalence with the English version (kappa values = 0.76-0.95 and ICC = 0.81-0.92), test-retest re

Gender norms, psychometric properties, and validity for the Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory.

OBJECTIVE: The Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory [EPSI; Forbush KT, Wildes JE, Pollack LO, Dunbar D, Luo J, Patterson K, et al. Development and validation of the EPSI. Psychological Assessment, in press] is an empirically derived self-report measure of eating disorder (ED) symptoms. The EPSI is able to capture the majority of variance associated with established ED measures, yet possesses additional content that is not currently represented in any existing multidimensional ED measure. The purpose of this study was to present normative and psychometric data for the EPSI in a large sample of c

Development and psychometric evaluation of the knowledge scale for adults with congenitally malformed hearts.

BACKGROUND AND RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Adults with congenitally malformed hearts have knowledge gaps regarding their heart condition, and their level of knowledge is not routinely assessed during follow-up. One reason for this is that there are few validated, user-friendly questionnaires to assess knowledge about congenital heart disease and its effects on daily life. Failure to identify low levels of knowledge could lead to less motivated and insecure individuals not actively involved in treatment and care of their heart condition. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop and test a

Development and psychometric evaluation of a brief version of the hyperventilation questionnaire: the HVQ-B.

The fear of arousal sensations characterizes some anxiety disorders and is a core feature of an established risk factor for anxiety and related disorders (i.e. anxiety sensitivity; Taylor, 1999). Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to a fear of anxiety-related bodily sensations stemming from beliefs that these have catastrophic consequences. Interoceptive exposure (IE; repeated exposure to feared arousal sensations) has been shown to decrease AS. The 33-item Hyperventilation Questionnaire (HVQ; Rapee & Medoro, 1994) measures state levels of cognitive, affective, and somatic responses to IE and aro

Psychometric properties of the Korean version of stanford acute stress reaction questionnaire.

The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Korean version of Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ). A Korean version of the SASRQ was produced through forward translation, reconciliation, and back translation. A total of 100 healthy, non-clinical participants were selected through screening and clinical interview, and they each were given a set of questionnaires including SASRQ. Psychometric properties of SASRQ were then examined through statistical analyses. Full-scale and subscales of SASRQ yielded excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.9

Psychometric properties of fatigue severity and fatigue impact scales in postpolio patients.

We evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and the Fatigue Impact Scale (FIS) and to determine whether these scales are potentially applicable for measuring fatigue in postpolio patients (PPS). After the Turkish adaptation of FSS and FIS using a forward-backward procedure, the scales were administered to 48 PPS patients without additional health problems that may induce fatigue. Reliability studies were carried out by determination of intraclass correlation coefficient and internal consistency by the Cronbach-α coefficient. Validity was tested

Heidelberg Coping Scales for Delusions: psychometric evaluation of an expert rating instrument.

BACKGROUND: Coping is of substantial relevance in the treatment and course of psychiatric disorders. Standardized instruments to assess coping with psychotic symptoms, particularly delusions, are rare. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a new instrument to assess coping strategies in the context of delusional experiences: the Heidelberg Coping Scales for Delusions (HCSD). METHODS: Two hundred and twelve inpatients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and affective disorders currently experiencing delusions were interviewed with the HCSD and other

Psychometric evaluation of the thought-action fusion scale in a large clinical sample.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the 19-item Thought-Action Fusion (TAF) Scale, a measure of maladaptive cognitive intrusions, in a large clinical sample (N = 700). An exploratory factor analysis (n = 300) yielded two interpretable factors: TAF Moral (TAF-M) and TAF Likelihood (TAF-L). A confirmatory bifactor analysis was conducted on the second portion of the sample (n = 400) to account for possible sources of item covariance using a general TAF factor (subsuming TAF-M) alongside the TAF-L domain-specific factor. The bifactor model provided an acceptable fit to the sample da

Psychometrical assessment and item analysis of the General Health Questionnaire in victims of terrorism.

There is a need to assess the psychiatric morbidity that appears as a consequence of terrorist attacks. The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) has been used to this end, but its psychometric properties have never been evaluated in a population affected by terrorism. A sample of 891 participants included 162 direct victims of terrorist attacks and 729 relatives of the victims. All participants were evaluated using the 28-item version of the GHQ (GHQ-28). We examined the reliability and external validity of scores on the scale using Cronbach's alpha and Pearson correlation with the State-Trait A

The development and psychometric properties of the HIV and Abuse Related Shame Inventory (HARSI).

Shame has been shown to predict sexual HIV transmission risk behavior, medication non-adherence, symptomatic HIV or AIDS, and symptoms of depression and PTSD. However, there remains a dearth of tools to measure the specific constructs of HIV-related and sexual abuse-related shame. To ameliorate this gap, we present a 31-item measure that assesses HIV and sexual abuse-related shame, and the impact of shame on HIV-related health behaviors. A diverse sample of 271 HIV-positive men and women who were sexually abused as children completed the HIV and Abuse Related Shame Inventory (HARSI) among othe

Danish version of 'The COPD self-efficacy scale': translation and psychometric properties.

The aim of the study was to translate 'The COPD self-efficacy scale' (CSES) into Danish and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Danish version (CSES-DK). CSES enables assessment of self-efficacy in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The scale consists of 34 items, describing situations which may cause dyspnoea in patients with COPD. The CSES was translated into Danish using a standard forward-backward translation procedure. To estimate the reliability, measurements of internal consistency and repeatability were applied. The validity of the Danish version

Assessing dog fear: evaluating the psychometric properties of the Dog Phobia Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Dog Phobia Questionnaire (DPQ; Hong & Zinbarg, 1999) is a 27-item self-report questionnaire designed to assess symptoms of dog phobia. The present study investigated the psychometric properties of the DPQ. METHOD: Study 1 explored the factor structure, internal consistency, and convergent and discriminant validity of the DPQ using an undergraduate sample (N = 174). Study 2 assessed the extent to which DPQ scores correlated with subjective fear ratings and avoidance during a behavioral approach test (BAT) with a live dog using undergraduate and community particip

Early adolescence and suicidal ideations in Croatia: sociodemographic, behavioral, and psychometric correlates.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Suicidal ideations (SI) indicate and predict psychological distress. We examined the prevalence of SI among early adolescents and its association with parental war participation, personal, behavioral, and sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional questionnaire study on 803 12-year-old adolescents. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and Children Depression Inventory. Unintentional injuries, physical fighting, and involvement in bullying behavior were assessed using questions f
