Challenges faced by health policymakers responding to COVID-19 in remote communities in Northwest Territories, Canada.

The health systems' response to the COVID-19 pandemic controlled the virus's spread but exposed fragmented systems and operational challenges globally. Understanding these issues is essential for enhancing health system capabilities and improving future pandemic responses. This study explored the perspectives of health policymakers in Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada, on the challenges to responding to COVID-19 and implementing the necessary public health measures in the jurisdiction. This study utilized a qualitative descriptive design and a community-based participatory research approach.

Japanese encephalitis: on the One Health agenda.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is one of the most well studied arthropod zoonotic diseases with human and animal research and their integration spanning 6-7 decades. JE research and policy in some Asian countries has epitomized the 'One Health' strategy of attainment of optimal health for people, animals, and the environment. However, despite significant mitigation of JE in some Asian countries primarily due to vaccination programs and infrastructural development, JE continues to be a major disease burden in the Asian region. Arthropod-borne zoonotic infections such as JE present some of the great

Factors affecting hand hygiene practice during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Zimbabwean population: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Practicing hand hygiene is recommended as one of the key preventive measures for reducing the transmission of COVID-19 and other infectious agents. However, it is often not practiced frequently enough or correctly by the public. We aimed to identify barriers to and facilitators of hand hygiene in the Zimbabwean population during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with a purposive sample of health workers, village health workers, church leaders, traditional healers, teachers, youth leaders and the general population selected from ten districts across

Hiding in plain sight: A call to prevent cutaneous leishmaniasis transmission in the United States.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), once considered a travel-associated tropical disease, is increasingly transmitted within the United States, particularly in southern regions. Despite mounting evidence of local transmission, public health recognition and preventive infrastructure remain limited. This Viewpoint highlights the urgent need to shift the U.S. CL response from questioning endemicity to preventing transmission. We review ecological, clinical, and surveillance data demonstrating the presence of competent vectors, animal reservoirs, and autochthonous human cases. Diagnostic delays, underre

Young people in Australia discuss strategies for preventing the normalisation of gambling and reducing gambling harm.

BACKGROUND: The normalisation of gambling for young people has received considerable recent attention in the public health literature, particularly given the proliferation of gambling marketing aligned with sport. A range of studies and reports into the health and wellbeing of young people have recommended that they should be consulted and engaged in developing public health policy and prevention strategies. There are, however, very few opportunities for young people to have a say about gambling issues, with little consideration of their voices in public health recommendations related to gambl

Field Test and Validation of the Multiplier Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella-Zoster Multiplexed Assay System in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by Using Dried Blood Spots.

Here we describe baseline validation studies and field performance of a research-use-only chemiluminescent multiplex serology panel for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella-zoster virus used with dried blood spots in support of the 2013-2014 Democratic Republic of the Congo Demographic and Health Survey. Characterization of the panel using U.S. FDA-cleared commercial kits shows good concordance for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella-zoster with average sensitivity across assays of 94.9% and an average specificity of 91.4%. As expected, performance versus available standards validated for

"Nothing for Us Without Us": Normalising patient and public involvement and engagement in national clinical audits and health system improvement.

BACKGROUND: Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is increasingly recognised as essential to patient-centred care, transparency, and health system improvement. However, how PPIE is operationalised within national clinical audit systems remains poorly described. OBJECTIVE: To examine how PPIE is embedded and operationalised across Ireland's National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA) and to identify the organisational mechanisms that support sustained involvement. METHODS: We conducted a documentary content analysis of 23 publicly available NOCA materials from 2012 to 2025, includ

Perceptions of drones, digital adherence monitoring technologies and educational videos for tuberculosis control in remote Madagascar: a mixed-method study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Poor road and communication infrastructure pose major challenges to tuberculosis (TB) control in many regions of the world. TB surveillance and patient support often fall to community health workers (CHWs) who may lack the time or knowledge needed for this work. To meet the End TB Strategy goal of reducing TB incidence by 90% by 2035, the WHO calls for intensified research and innovation including the rapid uptake of new tools, interventions and strategies. Technologies that 'leapfrog' infrastructure challenges and support CHWs in TB control responsibilities have the potential to

Impact of air pollution on life expectancy: the role of digitalization, urbanization and institutional quality in BRICS economies.

Air pollution lowers life expectancy (LEX) by increasing the risk of respiratory, cardiovascular, and other chronic diseases. However, digitalization can help monitor air quality and support public health awareness through real-time data. Institutional quality ensures effective enforcement of environmental regulations and pollution control policies. Together, they help reduce pollution exposure and protect public health. Therefore, the current study aims to analyze the impact of Air pollution on LEX, with the role of urbanization, digitalization, and institutional quality in BRICS economies. T

Lessons learned: Infrastructure development and financial management for large, publicly funded, international trials.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Randomized clinical trials are widely recognized as essential to address worldwide clinical and public health research questions. However, their size and duration can overwhelm available public and private resources. To remain competitive in international research settings, advocates and practitioners of clinical trials must implement practices that reduce their cost. We identify approaches and practices for large, publicly funded, international trials that reduce cost without compromising data integrity and recommend an approach to cost reporting that permits comparison of cl

Tuberculosis is a major threat to global health, infecting a third of the world's population. In the United States, however, control of tube … try than in other regions. The resurgence in interest in developing new tools and the investment in public health infrastructure will hopefully be sustained in the United States so that the effect of tuberculosis on the US population will continue to diminish, and these new tools and approaches can be adapted to both high and low prevalence areas to meet the global challenge.

Emerging climate-related risks of legionnaires' disease and other waterborne pathogens in the United States.

Despite long-standing improvements in drinking water treatment and public health regulation, Legionnaires' disease is emerging as one of the leading causes of waterborne disease-associated hospitalizations and mortality in the United States (US). Legionella spp. proliferates in engineered water systems, and accumulating evidence indicates that climate-driven environmental changes are accelerating conditions favorable for their persistence, transmission, and human exposure. This review evaluated the public health burden of Legionnaires' disease and other major waterborne pathogens in the United
