Carotido-brachial artery bypass for radiation induced injury of the subclavian artery. The value of a lateral mid-arm approach.

Symptomatic subclavian artery damage, following radiation for breast or head and neck cancer, is very rare. We report three new cases in which arterial insufficiency of the upper limb developed respectively 3, 36, and 27 years after irradiation for breast cancer in two cases and tumor of the clavicle in one case. Patients were treated by saphenous vein by-pass using a new extra-anatomic route from the carotid to the brachial artery. They were two main differences from the classical carotido-brachial by-pass. The brachial artery was approached by a lateral mid-arm incision between the biceps an

Radiation injury & mercury deposits in internal organs as a result of thallium-201 chloride intravenous injection for SPECT imaging; additional biochemical information obtained in the images of organs from SPECT or PET scans; & potential injury due to radiation exposure during long distance flights.

In order to study functional as well as anatomical aspects of various internal organs, SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography) has been used extensively for evaluation of these organs. For SPECT study, intravenous injection of radioactive substances such as technetium-99m (20 millicuries) & thallium-201 chloride (3 millicuries) is commonly used. Although the physical half-life of thallium-201 chloride is 73 hours, its biological half-life is often more than 3.5 times that. Following intravenous injection of thallium-201 chloride it is concentrated in the heart, liver, kidneys, p

Oral connexin43-peptide-loaded milk extracellular vesicles mitigate lethal radiation injury while preserving tumour radiosensitivity.

Ionizing radiation is central to cancer therapy, where normal-tissue toxicity limits dose escalation, and is also a major hazard in accidental or mass-casualty exposures, where practical radiomitigators for radiosensitive organs are urgently needed. We investigated orally delivered milk extracellular vesicles (mEVs) loaded with the connexin43 carboxyl-terminal peptide αCT11 (XOlacta) in a murine 14 Gy total-body irradiation model and a syngeneic GL261 glioma radiotherapy model. A single oral XOlacta dose given 1 h after total-body irradiation conferred 42% 30-day survival despite an expected 1

NLRP3 Inhibitor KBD3536 Attenuates Acute Inflammation, Radiation-Induced Skin Injury, and Early Metabolic Dysfunction in Preclinical Models.

Background: Pharmacological blockade of the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome has emerged as an attractive pharmacological strategy for a broad range of inflammatory and metabolic disorders. However, translating preclinical efficacy into clinical success remains a major bottleneck. We previously reported the discovery of a novel, potent NLRP3 inhibitor, KBD3536, but its in vivo efficacy across different pathological conditions remains uncharacterized. Here, we systematically evaluated the in vivo efficacy of KBD3536 across diverse preclinical models of NLR

Putative role of NF-κB-mediated inflammation in acute cardiac injury induced by S-band microwave radiation in rats.

With the widespread adoption of wireless communication technology, the issue of environmental exposure to microwave radiation has become increasingly prominent. In the field of cardiovascular research, it has been observed that microwave radiation may have potential effects on target organs such as the heart. However, the dynamic evolution characteristics of this radiation over time and its relationship with inflammation still require further exploration. This study aimed to establish a rat model of uniform whole-body exposure to S-band microwaves. A range of methods were used, including detec

Subacute thyroid injury and relative parathyroid preservation following ionizing radiation: altered HSP-90 immunoexpression in a rat model.

Ionizing radiation is widely used in the treatment of head and neck malignancies. However, its subacute effects on adjacent endocrine tissues have not yet been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the structural changes that develop in the thyroid and parathyroid glands following irradiation and to evaluate HSP-90 immunoexpression in these tissues. The researchers initially randomized eighteen male Wistar-Hannover rats into control and irradiation groups (n = 9 per group). Rats in the irradiation group underwent 6-MV photon irradiation of the head and neck target region using a no

Recent advances in understanding of radiation-induced skin tissue reactions with respect to acute tissue injury and late adverse effect.

Skin is a tissue vulnerable to radiation exposure, which causes acute tissue reactions, including erythema, edema, desquamation, ulceration and late effects, such as skin cancers. As the effects of radiation exposure on the skin tissue are easily evaluated by visual examination, much information on radiation-induced skin reactions has been available from the clinical observation of people exposed to ionizing radiation, such as cancer patients receiving radiotherapy, although the mechanisms underlying skin reactions have not yet been fully understood. Recent advances in tissue biology at the mo

Efficacy and safety of local glucocorticoids for the treatment of acute radiation-induced intestinal injury: protocol of a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acute radiation-induced intestinal injury (ARII) usually occurs after pelvic radiotherapy. Glucocorticoids are potentially effective for the treatment of ARII due to their anti-inflammatory properties, but the currently available evidence is insufficient. Herein, we have designed a multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) to explore the efficacy and safety of glucocorticoids for the treatment of ARII. METHODS: Overall, 60 patients with ARII will be enrolled. Eligible patients will be stratified according to the grade of ARII and randomly assigned at a ratio of 1:1 to

Effectiveness and safety of pirfenidone for radiation-induced lung injury in non-small cell lung cancer: a retrospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) remains a cornerstone in the treatment of thoracic malignancies; however, approximately one-third of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) develop Grade ≥ 2 radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). Despite its clinical significance, no pharmacologic standard of care has been established for RILI. Pirfenidone, an antifibrotic agent with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has demonstrated potential in preclinical models of RILI. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of pirfenidone in NSCLC patients with RILI following thora

Oral colon-retentive inulin gels protect against radiation-induced hematopoietic and gastrointestinal injury by improving gut homeostasis.

Ionizing radiation-induced injury often occurs in nuclear accidents or large-dose radiotherapy, leading to acute radiation syndromes characterized by hematopoietic and gastrointestinal injuries even to death. However, current radioprotective drugs are only used in hospitals with unavoidable side effects. Here, we heated the aqueous solution of inulin, a polysaccharide dietary fiber, forming colon-retentive gel as a radiation protector in radiotherapy. Mouse models were established after 60Co γ-ray irradiation of the total body or abdomen. Inulin gels were orally administered to the mice every

Short-Term Statin Treatment Reduces, and Long-Term Statin Treatment Abolishes, Chronic Vascular Injury by Radiation Therapy.

BACKGROUND: The incidental use of statins during radiation therapy has been associated with a reduced long-term risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We examined whether irradiation causes chronic vascular injury and whether short-term administration of statins during and after irradiation is sufficient to prevent chronic injury compared with long-term administration. METHODS AND RESULTS: C57Bl/6 mice were pretreated with pravastatin for 72 hours and then exposed to 12 Gy X-ray head-and-neck irradiation. Pravastatin was then administered either for an additional 24 hours

Research trends of radiation induced temporal lobe injury in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma from 2000 to 2022: a bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: In patients with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (TLI) is the most dreaded late-stage complication following radiation therapy (RT). We currently lack a definitive algorithmic administration for this entity. In the meantime, the pathogenesis of TLI and the mechanism-based interventions to prevent or treat this adverse effect remain unknown. To better answer the aforementioned questions, it is necessary to comprehend the intellectual foundations and prospective trends of this field through bibliometric analysis. METHODS: Articles were gathered fr
