The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing in the United States, and 50%-75% of patients with HCC will develop metastatic disease. Orbital metastases from HCC are extremely rare. We report the case of a 52-year-old male with known metastatic HCC, who presented with severe proptosis and diplopia. An orbital mass was identified on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and confirmed to have hypermetabolic activity on positron emission tomography/computed tomography. He received a palliative course of external beam radiation therapy to the right orbit. Intensity modulated radiation t

There are many problems encountered in devising chemotherapy for patients with advanced or recurrent cervical carcinoma, in part because the vast majority of such patients have received prior radiation therapy with or without radical hysterectomy. Prior radiation therapy not only impairs bone marrow reserve but also interferes with the vascular supply to the tumor bed and delivery of the drug. In addition, many of the patients with advanced or recurrent cervical carcinoma have ureteral obstruction with impaired renal excretion of certain agents, thus limiting the tolerance to these agents. The clinical courses of 418 patients with breast carcinoma who received postradical-mastectomy radiation therapy to the internal mammary and supraclavicular are were revied in order to determine the normal tissue tolerance with various time-dose fractionation radiation regimens. Four different dose fractionation schedules wereemplyed during the period 1958-1968 at Memorial Hospital: 4900 rads/10f/32d; 4410 rads/9f/30d; 5000 rads/13f/18d; and 4600 rads/20f/28d. There was no difference in the acute reaction or local recurrence rate of the tumor in the irradiated area among the four fractionation

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a radiation technique used in patients with oligometastatic lung disease. Lung and chest wall toxicities have been described in the patients but pathological vertebral fracture is an adverse effect no reported in patients treated with SBRT for lung metastases.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old woman with the diagnosis of a recurrence of a single lung metastatic nodule of urothelial carcinoma after third line of chemotherapy. The patient received a hypo-fractionated course of SBRT.A 3D-conformal multifield technique was used with six cop

In the context of the clinical development of radiation oncology, the specificities of curative treatments and the necessary follow-ups for the acute and late tolerance evaluation require rigourous and up-dated methodological approaches given the limited feasibility of some studies to demonstrate their effectiveness. Indeed, the diversity of treatments in terms of delivery, type of radiation and multiple technologies render difficult the medical assessment. Although the randomized controlled trial is the gold standard for demonstrating the causal link of the treatment effect size, a state of t

The clinical and nutritional significance of radiation enteritis was assessed in eight patients with chronic diarrhea which followed curative doses of radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. Steatorrhea, found in seven malnourished patients, was ascribed to ileal disease or previous surgery, or to bacterial contamination of the small intestine. Lactose intolerance, assessed by breath hydrogen excretion after oral lactose and by jejunal lactase levels, was found in six patients. In a subgroup of five patients, the administration of two different defined formula liquid diets by nasoduodenal infusi

Although 2D cell cultures are commonly used to predict therapy response, it has become clear that 3D cultures may better mimic the in vivo situation and offer the possibility of tailoring translational clinical approaches. Here, we compared the response of 2D and 3D colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines to irradiation and chemotherapy. Classic 2D cultures and 3D spheroids of CRC cell lines (CaCo2, Colo205, HCT116, SW480) were thoroughly established, then irradiated with doses of 1, 4, or 10 Gy, using a clinical-grade linear accelerator. The response was assessed by immunohistochemistry, flow cyto

Acute exposure to ionizing radiation leads to Hematopoietic Acute Radiation Syndrome (H-ARS). To understand the inter-strain cellular and molecular mechanisms of radiation sensitivity, adult males of two strains of minipig, one with higher radiosensitivity, the Gottingen minipig (GMP), and another strain with comparatively lower radiosensitivity, the Sinclair minipig (SMP), were exposed to total body irradiation (TBI). Since Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) signaling is associated with radiation sensitivity and regulation of cardiovascular homeostasis, we investigated the link between dysr

BACKGROUND: Fibrosis, a proliferative response of fibrocytes after tissue injury, is a common sequela of external radiotherapy and can vary greatly among patients even in the absence of DNA repair syndromes, due to their different intrinsic radiosensitivity. Fibrosis is also a serious cosmetic problem for patients, and in some cases it can also imply pain.
CASE: Here, we report a case of a severe fibrosis 2 years after breast conserving surgery and postoperative 3D conformal breast irradiation. Furthermore, our patient had the suspicion of tumour recurrence. Our examinations were aimed at dia

Radiotherapy is a treatment option for the majority of malignancies. However, because melanoma is known to be radioresistant, the use of ionizing radiation as an adjuvant therapy in cutaneous melanoma patients is ineffective. Obesity has now been recognized as a risk factor for melanoma. High adiposity is generally associated with a more pro-oxidative status. Oxidative stress is a major player in radiation therapy and also a common link between obesity and cancer. Several adipocyte-released proteins are known to have a role in controlling cellular growth and pro-survival signaling. For that re

Women harbouring BRCA1/2 mutations are known to be at higher lifetime risk of developing breast cancer than non-carriers. Compared to mastectomy, conservative surgery is also associated, in this patient population, with a higher probability to developing recurrent ipsilateral breast cancer following primary treatment. To reduce these risks, the management of BRCA1/2 - associated cancers has therefore focused on optimal prophylactic and therapeutic interventions at the time of diagnosis. In a recent past, comparative analyses of radiosensitivity levels have been carried out in murine embryos ha

In the current study, amifostine is evaluated for its radioprotective role in serum and kidney tissue by oxidative (malondialdehyde-MDA, advanced oxidation protein product-AOPP) and antioxidative markers (catalase, glutathione-GSH, free-thiols-F-SH). Thirty Wistar albino 3-4 months old, female rats, were randomly divided into Group I (n = 10): Control, Group II (n = 10): Irradiation-alone, Group III (n = 10): Amifostine before irradiation. In Group II and III, right kidneys of the rats were irradiated with a single dose of 6 Gy using a 60Co treatment unit. Rats in Group III received 200 mg/kg

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adaptive strategies in radiotherapy (RT) require the knowledge of the total dose given to every organ of the body. Because of anatomical changes and setup errors non-rigid registration is necessary to map the different dose fractions to a common reference. This study evaluates practically if the accumulation of all of these registered dose fractions must take radiobiology into account in a classical clinical setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with head and neck tumors treated by chemo-RT were used. Contrast-enhanced CT scans were acquired prior and during RT

Adverse reactions to radiotherapy represent a confounding phenomenon in radiation oncology. These reactions are rare, and many have been associated with individuals with DNA repair disorders such as ataxia-telangiectasia and Nijmegen Breakage syndrome. A paucity of published data is available detailing such circumstances. This overview describes four exemplary situations, a comprehensive list of 32 additional cases, and some insights gleaned from this overall experience. Fanconi anemia was associated with more than one-half of the reports. The lowest dose given to a patient that resulted in a

BACKGROUND: Reliable determination of intrinsic radiosensitivity in individual patients is a serious need in radiation oncology. Chromosomal aberrations are sensitive indicators of a previous exposure to ionizing irradiation. Former molecular cytogenetic studies showed that such aberrations as an equivalent of intrinsic radiosensitivity can be detected by fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) techniques using whole chromosome painting (wcp) probes. However, only one up to three randomly chosen wcp probes have been applied for such approaches until now. As a random distribution of chromosom

In the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, low doses of radiotherapy were used to treat benign uterine bleeding. The cases of two women who received this form of therapy and later developed gynaecological malignancies and had high-dose pelvic radiotherapy are presented. A 76-year-old woman with an International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage-IIB squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix received external beam radiotherapy and intra-uterine brachytherapy and a 77-year-old women with a FIGO stage-IB endometrial adenocarcinoma received adjuvant postoperative pelvic radiotherapy. Both women
