Intraneural epithelial islands associated with a periapical cyst.

Epithelial islands associated with nerve bundles have been reported in the mandible and maxilla. An example of such intraneural rests is reported in association with a radicular cyst. The differential diagnosis of intraneural epithelial islands must include benign odontogenic rests, remnants of nasopalatine duct in the anterior maxilla, the organ of Chievitz, and neural invasion by a carcinoma.

[Synovial cyst in the lumbar facet joint. A rare cause of lumbar-sciatic pain].

Synovial cysts of the facet joints are uncommon lesions which may be asymptomatic or present as low back pain, with or without radicular symptoms. They are considered to be secondary to trauma or degenerative joint disease, and they occur more frequently in patients with spondylolisthesis. Diagnosis is normally achieved with computed tomography or magnetic resonance, which show a cystic lesion located laterally adjacent to the facet joint. We review the literature and report a patient who presented with first sacral nerve root symptoms attributable to a ganglion cyst of the left L5 S1 facet jo

Range and demographics of odontogenic cysts diagnosed in a UK population over a 30-year period.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the range of all histologically diagnosed odontogenic cysts along with age range, sex distribution and site of presentation over a 30-year period. METHODS: All entries for odontogenic cysts occurring during 1975-2004 inclusive were retrieved and analysed for demographic data. RESULTS: A total of 55,446 specimens were received, of these 7121 (12.8%) specimens were diagnosed as odontogenic cysts. Radicular cyst was the most common diagnosis (52.3%), followed by dentigerous cyst (18.1) and odontogenic keratocysts (11.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Our stud…

Paradental cysts: a role for food impaction in the pathogenesis? A review of cases from Northern Ireland.

We present the clinical, radiographic and histological findings of 15 paradental cysts. These were the second most common type of cyst assoc … cases, a useful diagnostic sign. Most cysts were lined with epithelium that resembled that seen in radicular cysts, although the lining of three cysts resembled that of unicystic ameloblastoma, a potential diagnostic pitfall. We propose that the relation between location of cyst and angle of impaction points to a role for food impaction in the pathogenesis of p …

[Intradural spinal cysticercosis provoking radicular symptoms].

The authors describe a case of spinal intracanal cysticercosis. The cysts were situated intradurally, provoking radicular symptoms: pain, paresis. CT investigations showed herniation of discs L4/L5 and L5/S1 interpreted as the cause of the mentioned symptoms. Surgical treatment included discectomy L4/L5 and L5/S1. Recurrence of symptoms was investigated by means of MRI showing the presence of cysts situated among cauda equina roots. Intraoperative finding--cysticercosis was confirmed by pathologic investigation.

Case series of adenomatoid odontogenic tumour of jaws with variations in presentation.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a rare tumour of odontogenic origin with distinct clinicopathological appearance but is often clinic … predominantly radiolucent lesion are overlapping with other oral pathologies like dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, calcifying odontogenic cyst, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour, unicystic ameloblastoma etc. One must be aware and updated with the variation in appearance of AOT. Encapsulation of tumour causes less cumbersome enucleation of the tumour, a s …

Fate of pulpectomized deciduous teeth: Bilateral odontogenic cyst?

Pulpectomy is preferably more conservative treatment option than the extraction of deciduous teeth despite few undesirable consequences of obturating materials of which odontogenic cysts are one. This article aims to report a case of an 11-year-old female child having bilateral odontogenic cysts, i.e., radicular and infected dentigerous cyst followed by pulpectomy of deciduous molars using zinc oxide eugenol which was surgically enucleated and followed up to 6 months until satisfactory healing of bone was observed. The article also emphasizes on the importance of regular follow-up of the pulpe

Nuclear morphometric features of epithelial cells lining keratocysts.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the nuclear morphometric features of epithelial cells lining keratocysts and some other odontogenic cysts. STUDY DESIGN: All cases were selected from the archives of the Department of Pathology, Gülhane Military Medical Academy, as follows: 20 keratocysts and 10 dentigerous and 10 radicular cysts. Nuclear morphometric variables were measured on hematoxylin and eosin-stained histologic slides. Basal and intermediate cells of the epithelium were evaluated separately. Nuclei of the cells were outlined interactively and measured using a specially written macro program. A…

Mast cells in human odontogenic cysts.

Mast cells have been shown to be present in substantial numbers in both nonkeratinizing and keratinizing odontogenic cysts and could be seen in the connective tissue capsule and the epithelial lining. Within the cyst capsule, mast cells were more prevalent just beneath the epithelium than in deeper areas. This distribution pattern for mast cells is in accord with the histochemical picture for heparin staining in odontogenic cysts. In the non-keratinizing cysts, there appeared to be some trend towards mast cells being associated with increasing inflammation but not in the odontogenic keratocyst

[Skin symptoms of chronic inflammation of a tooth root apex].

Cutaneous manifestations of a periradicular inflammation are now uncommon. In most cases the periradicular infection results in the development of an apical granuloma. If there is proliferation of resting epithelial cells in this granuloma a cyst will develop, the so-called radicular cyst. A rare form of periradicular inflammation is the so-called chronisch granulierende Entzündung nach Partsch [Partsch's chronic granulomatous inflammation]. In this case the granulation tissue spreads through the bone and results in a cutaneous odontogenic sinus. We report on a female patient in whom complete …
